I spent hours earlier today knocking up a really pretentious blog post about innovative music (if you can guess what i've been reading hats off to you) with a mix. I'm not even sure if it makes any sense in the end.
So share the wealth innit.

note - play track 2 very loud on big speakers in a dark room.

There's a load of bands i need to hear here, cheers!

EDIT: Listened to it and, no, half of it didn't make sense at all. There were some absolutey quality tracks, my two big faves were Howlin' Wolf (awesome blues) and The Misunderstood (weren't they the band managed by John Peel?) Speed Glue and Shinki and Pere Ubu were also brilliant and Scratch Perry is always good.
I mostly downloaded it for The Residents, and after listening to it i think i'm going to need to listen to a lot more of them to have any idea what they're like.
I thought the 15 min tracks dragged on a bit though, and i still massively despise Scott Walker
Apart from that it was great, thanks!

Spoon - The Beast and The Dragon, Adored I love this entire album... and this was the song that introduced me to spoon.
Shawn Colvin - Sunny Came Home I rediscovered this song only recently, and have vague memories of loving it on the radio years ago.
Bush - Glycerine I cant explain why i like this one so much, it was the soundtrack to some rather... interesting times.
Mummy Calls - Beauty Has Her Way See above.
Counting Crows - Round Here Love this band. Love this song.
David Bowie - Within You Love this guy. Love this movie. Love this song. Its so cheesy.
Grateful Dead - Friend Of The Devil I heard the counting crows version first, but this has got some interesting guitar in the background.
David Gray - Shades of Grey Who wouldn't steal their girlfriend's father's prize cows, then get drunk and stoned, and try to escape to mexico?
Blues Traveller - Hook So... true.
Blue October - Calling You (For Mamie) This ones all cheesy and cliche and cute.

I know that most of these are fairly... well-known amongst certain circles. But being brought up in the hole that is this town, its hell hard to find most of this music. I also recognise that my taste in music is somewhat... lacking. =D

my list is all mainstream. no new, obscure bands to discover, i don't think, but oh well.

1. radio ballet by eluvium - not really a 'song'. but still one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard. it's not too busy, and it's something i could fall asleep to. from my favorite eluvium album, copia, it just seems to move you without needing lyrics to do it.

2. across the universe by the beatles - some of my favorite lyrics. i'm sure everyone's heard this song before so i don't really have to go into detail. it kind of lets your imagination run wild if you listen to the words.

3. we used to vacation by cold war kids - musically, it's pretty different from what you usually hear in a song like this. nathan willet has some interesting vocals and the lyrics are just plain depressing. but a very catchy song nonetheless.

4. cello song by nick drake - just really really pretty. the cello and drake's voice just go together very well, and the whole feel of it is ethereal, but with mixture of sad and hopeful at the same time.

5. corruption by iggy pop - an intense song with some cool guitar. some of the first material by iggy pop i heard, and i've loved it ever since.

6. silver lining by stiff little fingers - another catchy song. just punk, through and through. it's not the typical angry, '**** society' type of punk song.

7. dark is rising by mercury rev - like radio ballet, this could be considered a work of art to me. awesome lyrics (extremely quotable) with stunning orchestra in the beginning and through-out. a really hazy, kind of dreamy feel to it.

8. nevermore by queen - yeah, it's queen. i know there aren't a lot of queen fans at musicbanter, but this one is short and sweet. good piano and a cliche'd heartbroken 'forlorn' kind of vibe, but still unique in it's own little way. basically, you know it's queen when you hear it.

9. strange brew by cream - i listened to this over and over when i first got into cream. classic rock, but still pretty mellow. my favorite cream song, even though i don't listen to it as much.

10. uncle remus by frank zappa - jesus, i made my whole family listen to this with me in the car for about a month when i heard it. i'm a pretty big fan of piano, and this had a really cool piano intro that i want to learn. also a guitar solo, and some powerful lyrics.

Odd compilation.. but still very good. Pimper's Paradise is easily one of Marley's best tracks, and that is defiantly one of Incubus's best.

1. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
This song is a work of art to me, there are very few examples of such an uncommon piece of pop/rock music being so widely accepted. Each part stands alone as a very well crafted arrangement but when combined it takes on a life of its own.

2. Elton John - Empty Garden
One of the greatest tributes to another artist (John Lennon), the lyrics are very well crafted and written in metaphor but come through as blatantly obvious what Elton is singing about. He was close friends with Lennon and his pain comes through on this record.

3. The Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking
My favorite example of a kick ass Stones song that rips right through your soul with the first few chords. I love everything about this song, Jaggers vocals, Richards guitar work and the bridge just puts the icing on the cake.

4. Badfinger - Day After Day
Everything about this song is perfect to me, the lyrics, the guitar work, the vibe/mood it creates. I think most if not all people can relate to the words and it has that timeless sound that (imo) will never get old (even though production wise it sounds old).

5. U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
I like this song because it comes across as very open and honest. You can really feel Bono is singing about a personal subject that was very tough to go through. The arrangement is very well done and the dynamics of the song make the song.

6. Neil Young - Keep On Rocking In The Free World
This to me is a great example of an artist using his medium to speak out against the governments oversights/wrong doings/corruption. It's a great use of satire as well as Neil mentions some things that we as a people are guilty of in the free world in which we live. Almost like saying because we are free we are worse off because we can get away with more. At-least, that's what I am hearing.

7. Bee Gees - To Love Somebody
This song was originally intended for Otis Redding but since Redding passed away the Bee Gees decided to record it themselves, which was a great idea. I love how the soulfulness of the song comes through with the beauty of the Bee Gees harmony arrangement. Anybody who has loved someone that didn't feel the same back could identify with this one.

8. Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole
When I am in a rut and feel some of the decisions I have made weren't the best, I relate to this song more so then any other to do with that subject matter. I feel the song is very beautiful and the lyrics suggest wanting hope but because of how tainted the author feels he is, this hope is near impossible to him.

9. Weezer - Tired Of Sex
I love how off this arrangement sounds so loose and creates an unsettling feeling. This album (Pinkerton) had a very unconventional sound and in this song you have a rock star who is tired of just having meaningless sex with groupies and all he wants is to be in love (what a dilemma). I think many people can understand what Rivers is feeling and his emotions come through towards the end loud and clear.

10. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
I love the honesty of this song as well as the music. My only wish is that a third verse was written differently then just re-using the second verse but the song is so beautiful I am willing to forgive Mr. Wilson for this.

You do something to fix that...if you wanted
