I've actually downloaded both of your guys comps already with the intentions of checking them out. Both sound great, but I've got so much stuff to listen to atm it's making my head spin. Gonna throw both on the mp3 player and listen at work later I think. :)

The Beginner's Guide To Belle & Sebastian

With a new album this year, it's never too late to get acquanited with this lot's joys.

just copied and pasted from tumblor, advanced beginner's guide to when pop were still an art form, like:

http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ky...nkwuo1_500.jpg

Originally compiled for my friend Trix; a spiritual sequel to my 2007 Teatime Psychotropics compilation of transatlantic 1960s psychedelic pop. A few non-UK/US groups. Mostly obscurities. Goes from the baroque and whimsical to more garage rock-y in the second half. Contains the best cover of Tomorrow’s ‘Real Life Permanent Dream’ you will ever hear. Non-aficionados of the era should probably steer clear and listen to fucking Deerhunter or something

2. Time Track - Skip Bifferty
3. Life Is Short - Billy Nicholls
4. What Does It Feel - The End
5. When The Alarm Clock Rings - Blossom Toes
6. The Birthday - The Idle Race
7. Yo Recuerdo Mi Mundo - Los Shakers
8. 14 Hour Technicolour Dream - The Syn
9. Wake Up Cherylina - The Smoke

PS: I noticed some of the files are m4a. If they don't play for you I will re-up with MP3s. It could be some leftover itunes stuff from about 5 years ago.

PPS: I failed to include anything from Bossanova / Trompe Le Monde because I don't think it's required listening.

trouserjazz 03-02-2010 10:55 AM

That is far too short for a pixies comp. Most Pixies songs are short anyway so I am sure it wouldnt have hurt to put a few more on there.

debaserr 03-02-2010 04:56 PM

its a beginners guide. to see if they suit you. and it keeps with the spirit of most of their songs like you said.

Violent & Funky 03-02-2010 07:51 PM

Sorry to be the *******, but some of you guys come off like pretentious twats when you post a "BEGINNER'S Guide" with a bunch of obscure tracks. If I am just getting starting with a band then I want to hear what made them famous, not what their mostest hardcore fans consider the best because nobody else likes them. This isn't a competition to include the most obscure songs. It cannot truly a Beginner's Guide to The Pixies if you only include half of their albums. And this isn't solely directed at trace87 because plenty of posters have done it, but he just happens to be the most recent example...

debaserr 03-02-2010 10:46 PM

i find it to be the best the band has. post your own or kiss my ass.

How does that make them pretentious?

You know there are actual compilations that exist, what would be the point to seeing all their singles that charted? Seems like it would take the fun out of it for me.

Yeah...I figure anyone coming here doesn't want the singles or radio hits. There are greatest hits compilations for that. This is for the people that want to hear the hidden gems.

Violent & Funky 03-03-2010 01:43 AM

I think the mix of the two would be fine, but completely disregarding half of the bands' output?

Alwell, apparently I'm alone in this opinion so I shall shrink back into the shadows...

its not there because it doesn't touch their earlier stuff with a 10ft pole.

The Beginner's Guide to Rasputina

http://imgkk.com/i/tiqONk.jpg

Rasputina is a cello-driven band that is very difficult to classify.
They call themselves "cello rock", which seems appropriate enough.
Band members are prone to dress up in Victorian-era clothing, and their peculiar songs often have a historical twist.
Melora Creager writes and sings (with a wonderfully warbally voice). Her sense of humor is very odd.
Their music is dark, heavy, and bizarre. I absolutely love it.

A simple formula was used in making this compilation: I chose my two favorite tracks from each of their releases. They are presented chronolotically.
Enjoy.

You are not alone!

A beginners guide should have the most accesible work from all parts of an artists career.

e.g. If i were to do a Muse comp, most of the songs that would be included, would not be in my top 20 muse songs, but it would be the more "catchy stuff" from the different parts of the career. I might include a few other songs to show what they can do, but I would stay with around 80% accessible.

noise 03-04-2010 11:23 PM

as others have argued, if you want to hear the band's singles, then go download their greatest hits album. this thread is to help people learn about a band through the ears of a true fan, rather than through the pocket of a record company.

mrguy 03-05-2010 12:20 AM

How many of the bands covered here actually have greatest hits albums?

Kind of irrelevant considering the existence of stuff like youtube, dailymotion, grooveshark, spotify or anywhere else you can hear all their hits for free with minimum fuss anyway.

A lot of these bands don't have "hits".
e.g. Porcupine Tree - can any of their songs be defined as hits?

And if you are new to a band how do you find a bands "hits"?

Edit... I suppose you can search by most popular....

Exactly!

Take artists like Tom Waits or Frank Zappa for example. A lot of their less popular songs aren't on youtube, and chances are short of getting hold of their entire discography piece by piece, this thread's the best way to hear their more obscure stuff - stuff that the fans think is just as, if not more noteworthy than their more well-known work.

I can see what angle you're coming from, but youtube's one of the sites I use to get an idea of what an artist's like. These mixes come in handy if I feel like hearing more. Certainly nothing remotely pretentious about making them.

Violent & Funky 03-05-2010 01:23 AM

Did anybody ever make a Dinosaur Jr. comp?

I didn't agree with the pretentious comment.

I do still feel there needs to be a certain element of "hits" in there though....

I didn't think you were :)

I can see the angle you're coming from, but at the end of the day these are all, of course, fan-made and not record company-made comps, so I'm just saying it's more or less a given that the hits won't exactly play a huge part in many of them. Sorry if it seemed like I having a go - that wasn't my intention at all.

And about compilations for beginners...
If I can say my own opinion, for me ideal compilation is both versions together - some "catchy" songs and also some harder to get into. I know some other songs can be often better than big hits but on the other hand it's good to have in compilation both types of songs.

mrguy 03-05-2010 12:54 PM

Yes, I agree with petula here.

But I think we have agreed to disagree, so I'll stop talking now.

Violent & Funky 03-06-2010 12:41 AM
