That was maybe one of the most difficult tasks I had to do. Although The Beatles are officially the most popular band, many people only know the few (and usually overrated) classics, or just the later Psychedelic Beatles. So for the ones that find their albums too many to tackle, here's a comp. Divided them into Earlier and Later Beatles, with a Bonus comp, the musts that were released later on the Beatles Anthology (some alternate versions and unreleased material on there).

I will have to thank the Seuss for uploading the comp for me as my internet connection isn't much, and I hope you'll enjoy the compilations.
**Many great tracks aren't included in here, as I had to cut my favourites from 125 tracks to 50, so I'm certain a lot of many's favourites didn't make it to the comp.

@Pete: I didn't care for "She Says" by The Blend (not digging the awful guitar) or America Loves Gansters by CunninLynguists (this track has really annoying skipping sounds that play throughout, not sure if that's supposed to be like that...)

Forbidden Colours
A Beginner's Guide To David Sylvian

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...vianwire09.jpg
genre: avante-garde, ambient electronica, art-rock, minimalist jazz, folk-rock, new wave

^ It's kinda weird how obscure a good 90% of the works of the man born David Alan Batt are, what with how hard they are to find both on and offline. I mean, hell, I don't even have every official album he's been involved with myself, but the below selections account for a good propotion of the man's sound.

David Sylvian then...you might have heard a Japan song or two (for whom he was the lead singer), you might have heard the oh-so familiar chimes of Forbidden Colours somewhere before, or you might be completely in the dark. What's important though is that Sylvian is one of the six singer-songwriters that I'll always put a notch or two above just about anyone else in music. Each of the other five have a sense of edge and character unique to them that gives them one over the rest in my eyes, and Sylvian is no different for me. Not only does he have what I'll always see as the joint-best voice to emerge from rock or pop music bar none (well, except the other guy), not only is he adventurous enough to stay consistently intriguing over the course of his 30-odd year professional career...well, I guess I'll let you figure the rest out.

Also, it took me fucking ages to put the two below covers together and hotlink several videos to their places in the tracklisting, so it must be worth it eh ;)

Part 1: How Little We Need To Be Happy
http://i36.tinypic.com/i69zeu.jpg
1. I Surrender [Dead Bees On a Cake]

6. Red Guitar [Brilliant Trees]
7. Ink In the Well [Brilliant Trees]
8. The Shining Of Things [Dead Bees On a Cake]
9. How Little We Need To Be Happy [Blemish]
10. The Rabbit Skinner [Manafon]
11. Late Night Shopping [Blemish]
12. The Department Of Dead Letters [Manafon]
13. Forbidden Colours (the Cult Of Eurydice) [Secrets Of the Beehive]
total running time: 57:02

Part 2: Giant Empty Iron Vessels
http://i36.tinypic.com/2w1umx0.jpg
1. Premonition (Giant Empty Iron Vessels) [w/ Holger Czukay - Plight & Premonition]
2. Big Wheels In Shanty Town [Rain Tree Crow - s/t]
3. The Day the Earth Stole Heaven [Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow]
4. Blackwater [Rain Tree Crow - s/t]
5. The Scent Of Magnolia [w/ Ryuichi Sakamoto - World Citizen EP]

^ Pics = linksies. Enjoy!

I think it's worth mentioning that the track I named the whole comp after's just about my favourite song of all time too, so there!

dankrsta 08-23-2010 04:24 PM

It's great that you put this compilation. I'll be checking this out as soon as possible. Thanks, just what I needed.

EDIT: I'm thinking of doing an extensive compilation(s) of Micheal Gira's work that will include all of his projects: Swans (of course), Skin, Angels of Light, Body Lovers/Body Haters and solo stuff. I think it's fitting, since Swans have a new album coming out after 13 years. If anyone is interested in checking that out (those that are not familiar with his work), I warn you, it'll take a while. And my upload speed is crap, but I can do it. I'll be persistent.

Your description of it was very interesting though, and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Sugar Shack [Joy] 2009
Ghost [The Story of the Ghost] 1998
Gotta Jibboo [Farmhouse] 2000

This is 21 tracks of Phish's most accessible material. It's intended for non-phans, as in people not familiar with the band's material. Their more "poppy" songs are included, as well as songs which definitely showcase the band's sound without alienating people who aren't familiar with their music.

Many of the songs included are in .wma format, so if that's a problem, I sincerely apologize in advance.

I attempted to put the songs on the compilation in order of most accessible to least accessible, so it can be a gradual process going through the songs and attempting to "get" it.

I'll probably get around to making a volume 2, showcasing what are just some of their absolute best songs.

Antonio 09-19-2010 02:56 PM

nice!^ Phish is awesome, hopefully a good number of people will check this out

duga 09-19-2010 04:14 PM

Good call...I started with some of their studio albums but quickly realized the real gold is in their live stuff. I only listen to live Phish these days. Same goes for most jam bands, really.

It's about time we get someone to represent the jam band side of contemporary prog. It's one of the most underrepresented styles on the forum. Nice comp. I'll check it out.

Tis' true, but at the same time, I can listen to Junta and Lawn Boy forever.

Antonio 09-19-2010 08:05 PM

^Junta is made of God and win, after all :D

ThePhanastasio 09-19-2010 08:18 PM

I really love Junta too, but I felt like those tracks were a little overwhelming for the overall mix. There will be some in volume 2 for sure!

I may just be wary about Junta because I was "introducing" a friend to the music of Phish, and the live version of "Icculus" came on, and I do believe it scared him. Near the beginning of the song, his commentary was, "Wh...what is Red Rocks? And why...wait, is Trey screaming about being The Edge?!" As can be imagined, the rest of the song only troubled him further.

Beginner's Guide to Avant-Garde Metal

http://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/db/i...4-27-a-web.jpg
(Don't ask why I chose a picture of the Cateye Nebula to represent Avant-Garde Metal)

When it comes to avant-garde music in general it becomes very hard to find an accurate description of what it's suppose to sound like because its so varied. I've always looked at it as music "above and beyond status quo of other metal styles" be it with their instrumentation, lyrics, arrangement, or just the band in question's vast departure from what they were doing before. I don't think any band is labeled avant-garde initially, it comes with time and maturity, because nearly every band in this mix began as a typical black metal/ death metal/ whatevermetal band, but grew as the years went on.

This is a mix of 15 tracks where I've tried to leave out some of the more popular ones in favor of bands who go under the radar of most folks. It's a longer playlist so set aside the time to really listen to it, preferably with headphones. If anybody is interested in any particular artist, just let me know and I'll see what I can do about hooking you up with a full album.

Track List

As always band names are bolded
Song titles are "quoted"
Album names are italicized

01. Arcturus - "Kinetic" - The Sham Mirrors (2002)
02. Shining - "Fisheye" - Blackjazz (2010)
03. Kadenzza - "Ghost in the Shell" - Second Renaissance (2007)
04. Meshuggah - "Bleed" - obZen (2008)
05. Stolen Babies - "Filistata" - There Be Squabbles Ahead (2006)
06. Vintersorg - "Matrix Odyssey" - The Focusing Blur (2004)
07. Ihsahn - "On The Shores" - After (2010)
08. Diablo Swing Orchestra - " A Tap Dancer's Dilemma" Sing Along Songs For the Damned and Delirious (2009)
09. Kekal - "Violent Society" - 1000 Thoughts of Violence (2003)
10. Manes - "Nobody Wants the Truth" - How the World Came to an End (2007)

You shan't be disappointed. The songs are all varied and none have an excess of guttural vocals to turn off the people who are not attuned to that vocal style. I was listening to it last night through headphones on my MP3 player and was quite pleased with my creation. The only thing about it that may turn people off is the length, clock at just about an hour and a half, it's not for everyone. That said though, I'm listening to it for a 2nd time right now and I'm thinking about playing it again.

duga 10-08-2010 11:06 AM

It seems Sigh gets mentioned a fair amount around here. Those guys deserve all the attention and praise they can get...Imaginary Sonicscape is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. A lot of people can't handle its "quirkiness" (mostly the stubborn metalhead types) but I loved it from the first power chord.

I've been going on about them for the last little while now because I know a few people here like them and I'm hoping to create a few more fans. It's one of those albums that's not quite metal enough to turn off non metal fans, but just heavy enough to ensnare metal heads. But like you said, there are some metalheads stubborn enough to not like it for it's quirkiness. It's just so unique, I would have never believed that a moog synth could be utilized for anything other than industrial metal, but Sigh proved me wrong there. What's great about them is that they've been growing ever since that album, adding a saxophonist to their permanent roster who is a woman no less. Besides playing the saxophone she acts a secondary vocalist, often doing a harsher style effect than Mirai Kawashima, as well as acting as the bands chief sex appeal, which has given the band more notoriety in the last 3 years.

duga 10-08-2010 11:20 AM

Yeah, I definitely still have to check out more of their albums. Imaginary Sonicscape has been enough for me until now. Any suggestions on which album to grab next?

Hangman's Hymn (2007) is the next best step. It continues with their transition into avant-garde and was a lot better than their 2005 album Gallows Gallery. After that I would check out their 2010 album Scenes from Hell and if you enjoy that then check out Gallows Gallery (2005). From there you can decide if you want to go back and check out their early '90's black metal stuff, it's not in any way bad, but their later stuff was far better.

Beginner's Guide to Progressive Metal

http://blog.mypets.ws/wp-content/upl...g-hat-cute.jpg

I decided if I made a beginner's guide to avant-garde metal I should also make one for progressive metal. Prog metal has come under some scrutiny, a lot of complaints aimed at the fact that most prog metal bands are less about prog and more about songs that push past the 5 minute mark and usually feature clean vocals. I will be the first to admit that that is a pretty reasonable assertion to make, but just as is with every other genre in the music industry, there will always be gems in the slew of sewage. These are the bands that you can tell spent hour listening to bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Camel, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. This is metal's nod in acknowledgment of progressive rock, and as a prog rock fan I think they do a pretty good job of it. This will be a part 1 as I didn't want to overload anybody with a lengthy list, so if this one proves to be popular, I will be making it's follow-up.

01. Enslaved - "Ethica Odini" - Axioma Ethica Odini (2010)
02. Pain of Salvation - "Undertow" - Remedy (2004)
03. Devin Townsend - "Earth Day" - Terria (2001)
04. Nevermore - "Sentience 6" - This Godless Endeavor (2005)
05. Opeth - "Demon of the Fall" - My Arms, Your Hearse (1998)
06. Between the Buried and Me - "Informal Gluttony" - Colors (2007)
07. Subterranean Masquerade - "Awake" - Suspended Animation Dream (2005)

Get On This
