A Progression in Metal | loathsomepete | 8tracks |

I love this! |
My last one for a little bit.
Opeth are a progressive death metal band from Sweden that I hold very close to my heart. The band began 20 years ago but in that 20 years, only Mikael Åkerfeldt has remained in the lineup, as vocalist, guitarist, and even bass on one album. Heavily inspired by the progressive rock bands of the '60's/'70's (Camel in particular) Opeth are known for their long song lengths, rapid shifts in tone and dynamics, and a heavy use of acoustic passages. Åkerfeldt also utilizes some of the best guttural vocals I have ever heard, but can also sing better than most everybody else. In 2001 they really took the metal world by storm with the release of their 5th studio album Blackwater Park, which began a partnership between the band and English musician Steve Wilson, of Porcupine Tree fame. With his expertise working the production board, the band has only further honed their sound, experimenting with more prog and less death metal on certain albums, but always leaving enough to satisfy even the most finicky metalhead. I chose at least one song from each of their studio albums to show their progression from kids with an idea to masters of that idea. As they are a prog band, their earlier albums were concept albums, so the songs may not make as much sense lyrically, but are still worthy of even the stuffiest s prog-fan's archive. It is not easy just taking bits and pieces from each Opeth album, because there are no casual Opeth fans, you either like the albums or you haven't listened to them. This is just a guide for people who may have been curious about the band, but didn't know where to start, or was turned off because they're metal. Yes they are metal, but since when was that a bad thing? This is a band I can keep revisiting no matter how many times I listen to them, a band that transcends the bar set by many other metal bands. 01. "Advent" - Morningrise (1996) 02. "Demon of the Fall" - My Arms, Your Hearse (1998) 03. "In My Time of Need" - Damnation (2003) 04. "Forest of October" - Orchid (1995) 05. "Dirge for November" - Blackwater Park (2001) 06. "Burden" - Watershed (2008) 07. "Benighted" - Still Life (1999) 08. "Isolated Years" - Ghost Reveries (2005) 09. "Would?" - Burden Single (2009) (Alice in Chains cover) 10. "By the Pain I See in Others" - Deliverance (2002) Get at this |

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...w+image3+1.jpg Are you partial to achingly heartfelt lyrics? Do you enjoy emotional music that doesn't hide behind the veil of black eyes and slashed wrists? Looking for a band that has genuinely evolved, musically and lyrically, with each of the four albums they've released in their spectacular (and sordidly underappreciated) career? Then this compilation is for you. From "Your Favorite Weapon", released 2001 1. Seventy Times 7 2. Soco Amaretto Lime From "Deja Entendu", released 2003 3. Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis 4. Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades 5. The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot From "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me", released 2006 6. Degausser 7. The Archer's Bows Have Broken Non-album digital download, released 2007 8. (Fork and Knife) From "Daisy", released 2009 9. Sink 10. Daisy Die Young and Save Yourself |
^^ Dude...
No Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't... =/ |
I know :(
It used to be one of my favorites, but I played it to death. I was really torn between Maradona or Tommy Gun. There are too many excellent songs to pick from, so I really just had to stick with what I initially picked. You should do them a beginner's guide too! |
Actually I agree with basically everything on there! It's definitely a good track list. It's just that Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't is one my favourite tracks from them.
|
i have to say i really enjoyed the Brand New compilation...i listened to it twice this morning and must say i think i like them.....thanks RCVA

aw shucks :tramp:

I was thinking about putting together a Swans comp too, but seeing as you beat me to it why don't you go ahead and make it? I wait eagerly in anticipation. :) |
^^Oh yeah, some persistence  But, since I've said it, I should just get on with it...already.

I made this mix for a mate's show on uni radio and, rather than leave it at that, I may as well post it here. As with other mixes I've done here, you'll find some youtube videos linked to their respective songs in the tracklisting...

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...ridge/AFM1.jpg "On the third day after the King's death the sun turns black, and the King is reborn a God." due to winters cold edge and in celebration of new material from Comus here is my in-depth introduction to Apocalyptic Folk.....although i feel that a few of these bands would just consider themselves "neofolk" the term Apocalyptic Folk was first coined by David Tibet (Current 93) sometime in the mid 80s and apparently was originally meant to describe the type of people (folk) he was working with rather than a form of music (folk)...either way it was very fitting for both the style, mood, and people contributing..... the music tends to lean towards both Aleister Crowley inspired lyrics of Thelemic magic and Gnosticism....as well as ideas of "Revolt Against the Modern World" and a return to a more "traditional" way of life Quote:

Would anyone be interested in a guide to the Decemberists, before their sixth album comes out in January? I feel like it's one of the few guides I'd be qualified to write.
|
i would....i've never really listened to them
|
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...x/decguide.jpg One of my favourite artists, the Decemberists are a band who are as much about storytelling as they are about melody, and as much about humour as they are about melancholy. I found it difficult to summarize their 10 years and 5 albums in 60 minutes, due to both track length and quality of material, but feel I've competently assembled 12 tracks to do them justice. Castaways and Cutouts (2002) 1. Leslie Anne Levine 2. Odalisque Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) 3. Red Right Ankle 4. The Bachelor and the Bride Picaresque (2005) 5. The Sporting Life 6. 16 Military Wives 7. The Engine Driver The Crane Wife (2006) 8. The Island: Come and See/The Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel the Drowning 9. Sons & Daughters Always the Bridesmaid Single Series (2008) 10. Record Year The Hazards of Love (2009) 11. The Rake's Song 12. The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...takebutton.jpg |
i loved every track...i am officially a fan....they seem like a folky mix of The Shins and The New Pornographers but with their own sound and style.....thanks a lot
|
Completely welcome! Thanks for giving it the time of day!
EDIT: Speak of the devil, lp6 leaked today. I might have to edit my guide to include it. |

Does this fall under that tag?
If so I think I've heard quite a bit of it on some compilations like Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer. EDIT: I didn't even see that you had him featured on your compilation. I don't read enough. Maybe I should start soon. |
That looks like a great comp Pedestrian. I'm excited to listen, especially if they're like the Shins as bob said.

|
good to hear. I made myself a mix cd for the car so I figured that I should up it.
|
In this beginner's guide: an atrocious lack of "Blues from Down Here", by far and above the best TVOTR song.
|
|
Is it just me or did he put emphasis on the wrong word in that sentence
lol |
blasphemer!
the dude can do no wrong. |
i really enjoyed this mix....but have to admit that i lean towards the stuff off of 'Return To Cookie Mountain'....which i'm download right now....
|
my favorite TVOTR songs are from cookie too. but dear science is more consistent.
|
i could see that...actually 'Crying' is probably my favorite track on your mix

He said "That's just your opinion man", as if it was his opinion-man, whatever an opinion-man is.
I would have said "That's just your opinion man" It's like saying "That's a sweet ass car!" but placing the emphasis on "sweet" instead of "car", implying that the ass-car is sweet. |

Anyways I really enjoyed it. I can hear the Shins resemblance, but they definitely have their own twist on things as well. After listening I discovered we already owned Picaresque but I'd somehow missed out on uploading it and listening to it. So I did, and it was good. Thanks for showing me a great band. |
