was there anything "essential" off of the new album that I missed?

not that There Is No Enemy is necessarily a bad album but honestly there was only one song on it that really sticks out in my mind....but it also got quite a bit a play in my life at the perfect time...so sentimental value helps :)

Not a fan of Pablo Honey are we? :D

debaserr 02-15-2011 04:26 PM

I was gonna put on creep, but it's just so inferior to anything else that was on my playlist.

Zer0 02-15-2011 04:33 PM

True. You could have thrown in 'Anyone Can Play Guitar', even though it's still inferior it will give people a little taster of the album.

'Exit Music (for a Film)' sucks...

The Beginner's guide to... Trash Electro

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...shelectro2.png

The last time I had posted a comp with this kind of Electro, I had some more aggressive material along with some that was more accessible. That aggressive stoof is now established and even has its own name: Trash Electro! This time there's more of that, kind of like a celebration of greatness, but I had to mix it up a bit and include some tracks from other genres (like commercial Electro), because too much of one thing is never good. It's all about variety.

01) Redial - Venom
02) Skanek - Generation
03) Noize Generation - Monster (Dumme Jungs Remix)
04) Konovalov - Crackers
05) The Boomzers - WTF!
06) Uppermost - Dood
07) HAEZER - Black (La Musique d'Ordinateur Remix)
08) The Mastertrons - Stick Man (Monophonique Remix)
09) The Subs - The Face of the Planet (Gtronic Remix)
10) HAEZER - James Bond (Sapphire Remix)
11) DJ Antention - My Body Surrender
12) Dirty Politics - Chick Habit
13) Trashing Teenagers - Whiplash
14) Uppermost - Biscuit Factory
15) GSUS - Molotov
16) HAEZER ft. Label - Warfare (Trashing Teenagers Remix)
17) Dem Slackers - Swagger (Clouds Remix)
18) Konovalov - Drop Drop Drops
19) Feed Me - Jodie
20) F.O.O.L. - Reborn (Redial Remix)

Presenting

A Beginner's Guide To

Camera Obscura

http://www.alltheprettysongs.com/wp-...a-obscura3.jpg

Camera Obscura was formed in Glasgow in 1996 by Tracyanne Campbell, John Henderson and Gavin Dunbar. In the 15 years since they have released one mini-album Rare UK Bird (1999) and four studio albums, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi (2001), Underachievers Please Try Harder (2003), Let's Get Out Of This Country (2006) and My Maudlin Career (2009) along with a scattering of singles and EPs. The band have gone from strength to strength with each album building in confidence and songwriting and building up a dedicated fanbase along the way. The band are a little too often compared to fellow Scots Belle & Sebastian, a comparison the band are tired of, but like B&S they are greatly influenced by 60's pop melodies and they transport the listener back to simpler musical times. Frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell's lyrics often deal with the pain and heartbreak of relationships and her deeply personal lyrics and sweet, shy, down-to-earth nature has made her an unlikely cult idol with fans. Camera Obscura have an incredibly consistent discography, including some killer b-sides, and anyone who investigates more will be greatly rewarded.

French Navy (My Maudlin Career)
Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken (Let's Get Out Of This Country)
Keep It Clean (Underachievers Please Try Harder)
The Sweetest Thing (My Maudlin Career)
Teenager (Underachievers Please Try Harder)
Eighties Fan (Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi)
San Francisco Song (Keep It Clean single)
Let's Get Out Of This Country (Let's Get Out Of This Country)
Let Me Go Home (Underachievers Please Try Harder)
My Maudlin Career (My Maudlin Career)

a beginner's guide to Mr. Bungle
http://www.audioadd.net/storage/Mr%2...=1238774562776

Mr. Bungle are among my favorite rock bands, though labeling them with any genre is a precarious venture.

I was making another personal mix CD so I figured I'd share it. Some of the files I personally edited to remove atmospheric interludes that annoy me(all from S/T album). Also, I removed half of Carry Stress In The Jaw because it's crap.

All files were transcoded from FLAC to MP3 V0(LAME). I also embedded artwork and included a m3u playlist. Enjoy!

Analog synths, drum machines, distant vocals, bare stripped down aesthetic, hypnotically catchy...that's pretty much Minimal Synth. It was the underground cousin of synth-pop, but without all the embellishments of commercialism. Instead, minimal synth had a raw DIY attitude, more like a synthy, electronic version of punk and post-punk. Beside this outwardly differences, there was one internal, the most important difference. Both, mainstream synth-pop and minimal synth shared common influences, the most obvious being Kraftwerk and their futuristic vision of Man Machines. The mainstream synth hysteria embraced it optimistically, creating a kind of futuristic utopia. At the same time, I would rather describe many minimal synth music as a rather dystopian Man vs Machine. This tension can be felt in the often bleak sound, desperate almost relentless repetition and other times in deep seeded melancholy, although it might seem cheery on the outside. Hey, I just described Joy Division :)

This compilation is pretty big. It has 35 songs, all by different artists. (I actually had to cut it a bit). The opening track belongs to none other than Suicide, the most celebrated band on this comp and with a good reason. They were one of the first to apply this bare, minimal electronic sound on punk aesthetic. Many bands here have been long forgotten, but some of them have managed to gain a cult status (like The Screamers). A lot of them were short lived with only one album, or just an EP, but all are equally interesting. This whole minimal synth phenomenon lasted from the late 70s to the early 80s, dying down by the mid 80s, so none of this new synth revival can be found on this compilation. Beside USA and UK, minimal synth was especially flourishing in Europe (France, Germany and especially in Belgium and Netherlands). I tried to cover all this.

Variety was important for this big compilation to be enjoyable all the way through. That's why I spiced it up with different synth sounds, be it synth-punk at the start of the comp, then more general minimal synth sound in the middle, then a broader sound which can be called "minimal wave", some experimental tendencies (close to industrial), and minimal electronic in the end.

why edit them? want people to hear them the way they are i think.

Plus you forgot "Desert Search for Techno Allah", "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" and "Golem II: The Bionic Vapour Boy". Not to mention stuff from the early days.

debaserr 05-13-2011 03:08 PM

if they want to hear them unedited they can acquire it via youtube or purchase. or, you could put the effort into making your own compilation. I edited them because my goal was a personal mix cd first and this second.

it seems like I get about twice as many people bitching about my compilations as people thanking me for them.

BastardofYoung 05-13-2011 03:14 PM

I am not bitching. Just think could of added more and retained the weirdness Bungle is known for (Patton in general) cause that is part of the music. I do not know, can't tell much from your last.fm, just appears like maybe you are not a fan of the really experimental and noise stuff I guess.

Good comp for people who may not know them, but could of used a more to get people more hooked in.

I am a Patton fan, so I will always think anything looks incomplete haha.

debaserr 05-13-2011 03:17 PM

feel free to up a competing compilation!

my goal was to include my favorite songs by the band, not necessarily showcase their whole range of work.

the thread is called beginner's guide to... my only hope is that it sparks some interest in them.

PS: my last.fm has 50 plays.

So far, dankrsta's minimal synth compilation is excellent.

Waiting....On Ships Of Gold: An Introduction To The Black Heart Procession
http://17dots.com/wp-content/uploads...procession.jpg

formed in 1997 and coming out of beautiful sunny San Diego is The Black Heart Procession.....the core members are Pal jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel...both of which are core members of the band Three Mile Pilot....but over the years they picked up members form other Indie rock giants such as Modest Mouse, Hot Snakes, The Album Leaf and Rocket From The Crypt.....

if you had not guessed by the name of the band.....their music and their lyrics concentrate on the concepts of broken hearts, isolation and just complete despondency....but whats great about them is somehow there is a certain amount of lightness with in the music and even at times a a glimps of happiness within the lyrics.....their songs range from slow minimal soundscapes of the heart destroyed to damn near upbeat ballads of isolation....intermix this all with Pal jenkins very unique voice and vocal tendencies.....and you have some of the most wonderful melancholy music you will ever hear.....

my mix is fairly sporadic....really it's just placed in a way that i feel flows nicely....but does cover their entire discography....except for one single...whioch i only omitted due to the long legnth of the tracks....i listed the track names with the albums they are from in parentheses

enjoy :)

Very good mix for one of the most underrated bands on this forum. I would highly advise everyone to give this band a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I would say though... perhaps it would be better to split this mix into two, 31 tracks is a bit much for a beginner's guide I think.

bob. 07-17-2011 08:56 AM

i actually slimmed it down from 42 songs....but yeah maybe a split would have been nice

as for the quality....i just am completely ignoant to how to create better quality files.....please if you have suggestions pm me and tell me how or what program i need

Your Rules Don't Apply: A Guide To UNSANE

Unsane formed in 1988 and is a pinnacle band in the noise rock scene.....having always been a three piece and in the early days some member problems....which were concluded with death and arguments.....they settled down with three amazing members....Chris Spencer (Vocals, guitar), Dave Curran (Vocals, Bass) and Vinnie Signorelli (drums)....each of their amazing six albums has very graphic cover art depicting death and violence.....which are actually all fake and stem from their love for gore flicks.....actually the name Unsane comes from the censored american version of Darrio Argento's 'Tenebre'......Unsane's music is slow building, unrelenting and just mean....its like punching somebody in the face while getting punch as hard at the exact same time

in 1998 out while touring Europe for the album Occupational Hazard....Chris Spencer walked out of the venue they had just played in Vienna Austria....some one screamed out "hey" and when he turned to respond he was met with a wooden bat to his face....he was literally beaten within inches of his life by four attackers who though he was an american gi......this helped the demise of one of the greatest bands in the history of pigfuck and noise rock music.....in the interim Chris formed a short lived band called Cutthroats 9, dave also played in Cutthroats 9 as well as a band called JJ Paradise Club and Vinnie started a tattoo shop and later formed the band Storm Of Light with members of Neurosis

in 2004 the band reformed released a "greatest hits" albums called Lambhouse (named after the butcher shop they get the blood for their albums covers from) and toured extensively....releasing two more wonderful full length albums and last year starting their own internet only label called Coextinction records......this is a retrospective of their discography in chronological order....

as an added bonus i added six songs from the two Cutthroats 9 releases!!!!

Some of these are well thought out, so thank you to all who had shared. I'll give the camera obscura one a shot, but I can not get passed just the one song; Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken. I just think the other ones are inferior. Maybe besides French Navy.

I thinking of doing one for Patti Smith.

a beginner's guide to Björk

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_601zR7BqAw...edon_bjork.jpg

I was making a CD of my favorite Björk tracks, so I figured I 'd share it. Here's hoping Biophilia forces me to make another one. I think her two best albums are Post and Vespertine, so songs from those albums are frequent. I pared my playlist down from around two hours to fit on a CD, the last song that was cut was "It's Oh So Quiet".

All files were transcoded from FLAC to MP3 V0(LAME 3.98.4). I also embedded artwork and included a m3u playlist. The track numbers on the files are the order of the playlist, and the track numbers in the tags are from the CD/Vinyl. All of the files sourced from CD except Cvalda, which is from an excellent vinyl rip. Songs are ordered by date of release. Enjoy!

Wow! I can't believe that something I started in my first incarnation here has not only survived (unlike my first journal) but thrived beyond all expectation!

I usually huddle in the safety of my journal and rarely look out, and it's only recently I've started to crack the door and peer blinking in the sunlight out into the world of the rest of the forum, so I missed seeing this was still here. Glad you guys are getting such good use out of it, great that one of my original ideas is being taken on so well, and I must put together another guide soon, thinking maybe Marillion or Divine Comedy, though I am wondering if I should leave out artistes that I have covered in my journal under this very name, the Beginner's Guide to...?

One idea: should we create a list of artistes already covered, so nobody does one twice? 100 pages now, and it's a lot to check back through...?

Anyway, this is great! Long live me! :D
Seriously, I had no idea this would last four years. Great to see it has.

What's funny is I was considering giving it a shameless bump so new folks could see it and regulars might remember it. I've had it bookmarked since I started posting here and wish it was super-active. I plan on putting more together in the near future, but it does kinda stink when you toss a couple hours into making one and no one checks it out XD. So let's get this thread popular.

Here's an (admittedly not too original) idea: why not have a competition for something like "comp of the month", so that people download the comps and then rate them, and whoever get the most votes could be given some sort of pointless honour or something? At least it would ensure more people both posted, and downloaded/listened to comps.

that would be fun if people are actually willing to make them and listen to them:).....perhaps you should start a new thread and see if people sign up :)

edit

seriously....i just made a 7 disc compilation set for a friend who requested an "epic" mix tape....it is called "Fish At War" and comes with wonderful art work by me :)

Exactly, sounds like something I'd love to participate in.

Nice art. What's the type of music?

Trollheart 05-19-2012 05:30 PM

Oh all right, someone has to say it.... looks a bit fishy to me!
Yes, I know you're just fishing for compliments, but really what is the music all ab-trout? (THAT one was particularly awful, I know!)

Expect your artwork to appear soon on the front of the National Enquirer or Weekly World News with the headline

ALIEN FISHMONSTERS SECRETLY PILOTED B17S IN WORLD WAR II!

touche good sir....touche :)

the cd's are a wide variety of the music i like.....although somewhat geared at her taste with obvious well placed favorites but concentrating on opening her to new bands and genres.....at first i was a little bummed out when she told me not to make a tape.....tapes are way more fun to make and i can splice in silly movie samples.....but i have to admit i really put quite a bit of thought into the track selection and order and fell it actually came out quite well

the next comp i make will called Cows At Play

I'd like to hear that mixtape, bob. Got a download link?
