Bi-Monthly Comps - January theme : Maritime

January Bi-Monthly Upcoming Theme Is : Maritime

Send up to two tracks to : toretorden

Deadline : 15th of January, 2010

Maritime theme came out with the second highest score twice but has lost to Horror and then Night Driving .. But now it's time! Imagine fishermen out in the stormy seas, 19th century whalers harpooning greenland whales in the arctic, Pirates of the Caribbean and elsewhere, Fishing trips with warm coffee, mythical sea creatures like The Kraken .. Or you could find inspiration from the numerous seaside cultures of the world like the norwegian south where I'm from. Just how you want to relate your song to the sea is up to you. Maybe you wanna submit an old shanty or maybe you wanna find something a little more fresh.

Either way, I think it's a brilliant theme and I hope you guys find it inspiring as well. Because I initially recieved so few submissions for last comp, I'll allow for two entries this time.

Here's some inspiration :

etc.

Send me your stuff!

Earlier Bi-Monthlys :

LoathsomePete 09-08-2009 11:42 AM

I like these themed compilations, far more thought put into the choices rather just what you think sounds cool. Now just for clarification the genre won't just consist of "punk" but anything that's along those lines right? Kind of a stupid question but you see I've got this friend and well you know how these things are...

Should next month's be Steam Punk?

Guybrush 09-08-2009 11:46 AM

When I think of cyberpunk, I don't think so much of "punk" as in the genre of music, but more futuristic and gritty. I think of metropolises and cybernetics, information theft and pollution and society losing moral values. Throw in a bit of action, fancy guns and hackers. I'm gonna pick something along those lines :p:

I've got a million ideas for the next comp's theme and hopefully it'll be something people find interesting. :)

sidewinder 09-08-2009 12:46 PM

Sounds like fun! And yeah I don't think of any specific genre of music, just the subject matter of the song. Right?

jackhammer 09-08-2009 12:57 PM

Track sent although that only gives a week for the other comp to be guessed?

Zarko 09-09-2009 01:39 AM

Gritty/film noir sort of stuff...

Got some possible songs :)

Bulldog 09-09-2009 04:56 AM

I think I've got something that'll do the comp good. PM on the way...

music_phantom13 09-09-2009 10:37 AM

I'm really looking forward to this, but I have too many perfect songs. I can think of one that I bet multiple people will submit.

Piss Me Off 09-09-2009 10:41 AM

I don't think i have much cyper-punky stuff. I'll have a delve!

Same, I've been struggling to think of something off the top of my head. I've got to have something though.

Guybrush 09-09-2009 11:06 AM

For those struggling to think of something to fit, as Zarko posted, film noir could be an angle. Night, city lights, rain in the gutter kind of things for example. As most of you know, the Blade Runner soundtrack is done by Vangelis and it fits perfectly with the imagery like cars flying over the dark, futuristic Los Angeles.

sidewinder 09-09-2009 11:11 AM

I'm sure I will find something, I haven't bothered to look through my collection yet, I've only manged to think about it. ;) I have plenty of dark music and industrial, there's bound to be something in there.

Muzak 09-10-2009 04:10 PM

kewl, I think I got an idea for a track :)

Guybrush 09-14-2009 01:38 AM

Okay, tomorrow is the last day open for entries so don't forget it you who haven't contributed with anything yet!

So far I have seven plus my own :)

music_phantom13 09-14-2009 11:06 AM

NOOO I forgot to PM you mine. Coming after work.

+81 09-14-2009 11:33 AM

I'll get working on this.

sidewinder 09-14-2009 11:53 AM

I've only spent a bit of time looking through my music for an appropriate song, haven't found anything ideal yet. Guess I better do that tonight!

+81 09-15-2009 01:17 AM

Well I made a comp but any upload site is just not working for me tonight.

You are only meant to submit a single song... Upload on ediafire alone and send to Tore.

music_phantom13 09-15-2009 07:50 AM

You should wait like 20 minutes... I'm having an external hard drive error.

Guybrush 09-15-2009 07:59 AM

You got until at least midnight here which is not for another .. 8 hours :)

+81 09-15-2009 08:31 AM

Well now that I foolishly put so much effort into a comp I'll probably throw it in the mix tape thread or something.

Tracklist if anyone's interest.

1. M83 - A Guitar & A Heart
2. AFX - Boxing Day
3. Suicide - Ghost Rider
4. Butthole Surfers - Cherub
5. The Chinese Stars - Cheap City Halo
6. The Blood Brothers - Celilia And The Silhouette Saloon
7. Cutting Pink With Knives - Ivre
8. The Locust - Aotkpta
9. mewithoutYou - Silencer
10. Lullabye Arkestra - Hold On
11. Tom Waits - Alice
12. Aphex Twin - White Blur
13. 65daysofstatic - Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here

Guybrush 09-15-2009 05:17 PM

Alright, september cyberpunk comp is now closed!

I'll make a separate thread for the comp when it's up sometime tomorrow evening most likely and then I'll update this thread with a new theme sometime next month ..

.. which will be something completely different!

Guybrush 09-17-2009 02:46 AM

The comp is up!

http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...er-2009-a.html

For tidyness, I'll unstick this until the next theme is announced.

Guybrush 10-03-2009 05:19 PM

Theme for October announced!

Medieval

You can take your inspiration from anything whether it be folklore or historical events or whatever - as long as it relates to the overall theme. Hope you like it!

Molecules 10-03-2009 05:20 PM

lol, i have some ideas for this actually but they're all on my absent ext. hard drive =/
what's that picture third from bottom, the lady in the lake?
the wickerman has some hilariously inappropriate, psychedelic guitar instrumental passages (the brief cave chase sequence) that i would contribute if i bloody had it

The pictures are ..
  1. Lancelot
  2. Nøkken, a malign water spirit from norse folklore
  3. Satan, frozen waist-deep in the center of hell, roughly as described in Dante's Divine Comedy (from the part commonly known as Dante's Inferno)
  4. Stonehenge
I love the Wicker Man, great movie! I've also got the soundtrack but I don't think I'll be submitting tracks from it as I've got something else in mind.

yes one of the greatest horror (?) movies ever, certainly in the top 3 British flicks for me. It's funny because that second picture reminded me of a creature in the 2000AD comic strip 'Slaine', they obviously based this hideous water spirit on the Nokken (sorry couldn't be bothered to trawl through the character map!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A1ine_(comics)

if i get back to my flat and harddrive before the deadline i will certainly throw up some candidates

Zarko 10-03-2009 07:17 PM

Will try to avoid the extremely obvious choice :p:

To you contributors in general, some of the obvious choices for the cyberpunk comp never got submitted so don't worry too much about obviousness. If it's been contributed already, I'll let you know. :)

Zarko 10-04-2009 06:28 AM

I meant obvious choices from me (See blue sig link)

Guybrush 10-04-2009 08:02 AM

^Ah gotcha :p:

Alright, because I think people might find it a little more fun if they can help determine what the themes should be, I've made a poll for next month's theme. If you want to suggest themes, fire away! All I ask is that your suggestion is something that works well as a theme - it could both have a lyrical and musical approach. The theme should conjure some ideas in people's heads.

I think the ones I've listed in the poll above do so (most of them at least) and you can go with multiple poll options!

FaSho 10-04-2009 01:33 PM

Not drugs or sex people, I can here that by turning on the radio, I'd much rather have a more interesting theme such as Vampires, or D&D.

+81 10-04-2009 07:35 PM

I'm hoping for horror or maritime.

Guybrush 10-05-2009 09:56 AM

Maritime would be my personal pick out of these and it's nice to see it's gotten 6 votes at this point although horror is leading with a staggering 12!

Don't forget about this month's medieval theme in all the votage going on!

jackhammer 10-06-2009 05:00 PM

For once I'm going to duck out of the bi-monthly. I can't really get the right track apart from obvious choices :(

Submit an obvious one. Remember last time, everyone avoided the obvious...and probably will in the future.

I've got a few great ones in mind.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 10-06-2009 07:13 PM

i voted for satan

speaking of which i'd like to point out that that doré piece is nowhere near medieval

:soapbox:
