Lol...I totally forgot! I was just reading the track list and said "wait a minute..." :p:

jackhammer 02-02-2010 11:41 AM

Bollocks I submitted the wrong song. What a twat.

Stone Birds 02-02-2010 03:47 PM

i wonder who else listens to RAA besides me on here?
FaSho?

jackhammer 02-02-2010 04:03 PM

Early standouts for me:

Part One-

3,7 and 10

Part Two- most of it was meh to be fair but

2 and 6 are damn good.

Stone Birds cover was not bad I have to say.

Worse track? Chromeo is bloody awful retro Electronica. Sorry friend- I know who you are ;)

ahhh... thanks :D
but of course it's no comparison to the original (Yo La Tengo, for those of you who don't know))

duga 02-02-2010 05:13 PM

downloading...i'm pretty pumped.

Idle Hands is a damn fine song, the rest of the Gutter Twins' material doesn't quite hold up though. Decent, just not as good as Idle Hands.

For some reason, I haven't been able to use megaupload in a long time. If it's not too much trouble, could someone upload this on a different site? Forever grateful.

Zarko 02-02-2010 07:17 PM

Looks the goods!
*DLing*

Dieselboy 02-02-2010 08:03 PM

Lotta great stuff I hadn't heard before on part 1.

Foxy Shazam!, Cocteau Twins, Two Lone Swordsman were my initial favorites, with the last one in that list being the overall best song I think. The Chromeo and Lizzy Mercier Descloux tunes were cool as well. I don't think I hated any of it. 0_0

I'll check out part 2 tomorrow. :)

seconded (nice avatar, fasho)

sidewinder 02-03-2010 12:43 PM

Shyte I need to download this tonight...didn't have time last night. Had to catch up on my banking and TV shows.

Guybrush 02-04-2010 12:23 AM

I've been a bit busy, so I've yet to give it a spin but I should have time in a few hours. Looking forward to it :) I have a couple of ideas about who may have submitted a couple of the tracks, but I'll bite my tongue until I've actually given them a listen!

sidewinder 02-04-2010 09:51 PM

Just played part one, some nice tracks but a few terrible ones too. A couple of guesses:

Antonio (Foxy Shazam)
Anteater (Big Big Train)
jackhammer (Lizzy Mercier Descloux)

Zarko 02-06-2010 08:38 AM

1.The Rural Alberta Advantage-The Ballad Of The RAA - A bit meh for me, vocals aren't much chop.
2.Jazzsteppa-It Was A Train - Not really my sorta jazz early but wasn't too bad, a nice chill out track after, not really my style.
3.$.99 Dreams-Rockland Psych Ward - Pretty interesting harsh electronic sounds against a sax, solid beat
4.Foxy Shazam-No.Don't Shoot - No...
5.Big Big Train-Last Train - Prog with ****ty Brit vocals. Enough said really.
6.Cocteau Twins-Heaven Or Las Vegas - Fucking classic.
7.The Gutter Twins-Idle Hands - Pretty basic alt. rock. Can't complain too much, solid, though again not really my style.
8.Chromeo-Outta Sight - I think jackhammer described it best :D
9.Lizzy Mercier Descloux-Slipped Disc - Nah...
10.Two Lone Swordsmen-Sick When We Kiss - Not too bad, though I prefer some of their other stuff.

1.M83-Gone - Can't complain, wouldn't go out of my way to listen to again though.
2.The Sorrows-Let Me In - Pretty alright.
3.Thinking Fellers Union Local 282-Noble Experiment - Meh.
4.Luniz-I Got 5 On It (Reprise) - Decent-Good track, 'specially for gangsta rap, probably prefer it to the actual song.
5.Envy On The Coast-Mirrors - Just gotta mention the ****ty vocals. They're pretty bad.
6.Twinkranes-Fuzz Nor Feedback - Okay early but goes too long.
7.Nathan Haines-2D - Ugh...
8.Jethro Tull-Living In The Past (Live) - It's a joke right? :p:
9.Stone Birds-Autumn Sweater - Can't complain for what it is.
10.The No Smoking Band-Was Romeo Really A Jerk? - Interesting I guess. Hazmat Modine better with a similar style IMO.

Zarko 02-06-2010 08:47 AM

Two Lone Swordsmen seems like a Sidewinder type deal.
Gotta agree though, Big Bad Train must be Ant :p:
No. 9 Dreams submit Lizzy Mercier?

khfreek 02-06-2010 04:18 PM

MB Feb comp.rar

for the people who can't use megaupload

Correct for anteater.

Finally did check out part 2. Again, liked most of it, with The Sorrows being my favorite. Nathan Haines was smoooooooth and The No Smoking Band was kinda crazy...in a good way. Some funny lyrics.

Guesses for part 1:

The Gutter Twins - Rezz
Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Duga
Chromeo - Antonio?

Part 2:

Jethro Tull is tore...right?
Twinkranes - Jackhammer
M83 is Sidewinder?
The No Smoking Band was NumberNineDream
Envy on the Coast - Dr Suesicide
Gonna guess Zarko was The Sorrows, for no other reason than the non-chalant way he described that song in his own guess post. 0_0 (I liked this song alot.)

It's true. I was unsure at first, but as soon as I heard the tuba kick in during the Romeo song there was no doubt...sounded very similar. :P

Well the band is actually "Emir Kusturica & The NO smoking band" with Kusturica being the director of the film Underground, which soundtrack I sent to you last week. :p:

Anteater 02-06-2010 04:55 PM

Pretty awesome comp. overall, with Jazzstepa (submitted by Zarko I think) and Two Lone Swordsman being highlights IMO.

In any case, I find it laughable that anyone could consider BBT's vocals on the track I submitted bad, unless the prospect of a better sounding Phil Collins is somehow an anathema to one's oh so precious musical sensibilities. Bunch of weirdos. :D

Ah, that makes sense then. Didn't see his name next to the song on the comp, or that woulda made the guess too easy...wouldn't have even had to listen. Not that I wouldn't have checked it out anyway. 0_0

Well I didn't write his name, next to the name of the band, as I felt it would be too obvious. I think.

Just annoying in one's own opinion ;) Not necessarily bad in the classical sense of the word, just not my type of thing sorry. Alas, I am like that with vocals for the most part.

And Phil Collins is God.

Edit - No I didn't submit Jazzsteppa or The Sorrows

I find the guy's voice bland and trying too hard to sound like Phil Collins. I certainly don't consider him better. :p: But I wouldn't say "bad", just not for me.

It was that hard, huh? :p:

I regretted putting Jethro on there when I saw it was a bit less obscure than the average song on this comp. Next time, I'll obscurify your socks off.

The reason I chose Living with the Past is because it's a live version from the 2007 album "Living With the Past" (from which there's also a concert DVD) which I think is a great version. To me it shows how they're still capable. :)

.. And storymilo thinks Jethro Tull is embarassing. Prrhhf!

What? I like Jethro Tull... maybe you're mixing me up with someone else?

edit: aha! Found the culprit

he's mixing you up with me, the fact tore got so defensive in another thread over it was probably why he was guessed so easily (i'm not saying i was any better)

NumberNineDream 02-07-2010 01:18 PM

^Well I was going to get a bit cruel after you made that Jethro Tull comment in the other thread, but than I felt Tore already responded.

i simply don't like them they're extremely exaggerated by their fans. i really don't like the singer's voice, the instrumental side of the music sounds like it was put together without a lot of consideration for the rest of the songs, it sounds pretty generic, really the only thing unique to them is the flute, my dad is obsessed with "aqualung".

don't get mad at me for this post you guy's are the ones who wanted me to explain my dislike towards them

There isn't even any flute in Aqualung!

Unless you're talking about the album. Then that would make sense.
