Highly Overused Songs in Movies

Moviefone Mash: Is This The Most Overused Classical Song in Movies? (VIDEO) - The Moviefone Blog

After reading that article I got to thinking about some other overused songs but the main one to hit me and jump into my head was this one.

Can you guys think of any other overused classical songs or just songs in general that used frequently?

Liljagare 03-13-2011 03:33 AM

"O Fortuna" from "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff . Heard in dozens of film clips but the one I remember it most from is "Excalibur"

"Adagio for Strings" is usually up there as an overused song for those scenes where you know there is no hope left for a character or who just want to do a parody of an "over the top" scene.

chipper 03-13-2011 10:49 PM

This one is used a lot but it's a good song

Colours by Amos Lee.

It's used on TV shows and movies.

I rilly dunno

Gangsta's Paradise, mebbe?

ThePhanastasio 03-14-2011 12:17 AM

"Hallelujah" is used an awful lot in television and film, particularly the Jeff Buckley version. I mean, it's a really great song, but it's way overused.

khfreek 03-14-2011 12:29 AM

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture has a bunch of themes used in popular films

Too lazy to post links but How to Save a Life and Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) are used by many films/shows

EDIT: damn, ninja'd

djchameleon 03-14-2011 05:46 AM

OMFG yes, How to Save a life from The Fray gets played so much I'm sick of it!

"Iron Man" Black Sabbath is overexposed in all media. It got to the point where I was watching the Iron man preview and pretty much said "They're going to play Iron Man"...

then they did. What a shocker.

If they didn't play Iron Man there would have been an outrage I know from my point of view.

Yeah, it might be cliche but still its friggin' Iron Man it needs to be played with that trailer.

Eh... I feel it's a bit kitsch but that's just me.

I'd like to add:
Kung Fu FIghting
Black Betty

Nothing wrong with a little kitsch. :)

I dislike this song but I seem to be the only person who does, seeing as though its in every movie trailer ever......

Stone Birds 03-14-2011 03:29 PM

did anyone else notice both of these songs were extremely overused in just one movie and the same movie, it was pretty much 20 seconds of the first one then 20 seconds of the other and repeat and it basically felt like that for the whole movie.

mannny 03-14-2011 04:46 PM

There's plenty of those big classical music songs that get played over and over again in cinema. A few examples:

Mozart's Requiem

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

Liljagare 03-14-2011 11:00 PM

"All Star" by Smash Mouth would also be on this list. It just seems to pop up here and there in movie trailers, tv shows, or in commericals for tv shows.

Ah, you got mine...that was the only thing I had coming to mind. I recall a lot of trailers using that, and funnily enough, the song never makes it to the actual movies (most of the time).

I recall it most recently in Shaun of the Dead for the closing credits? It was a while back.

Possible new thread: You seen a trailer, and then went to the movie for something you saw in the trailer... and the movie comes and goes and it wasn't to be found? Isn't that garbage? Whether it be a song, a few scenes, or even, characters...

Probably just hit the editing room floor, but sometimes you feel gipped.

omfg I hate that so much or you hear a song in the movie and you go and buy the soundtrack and it's not on the friggin' soundtrack.

+ Yes, absolutely. A great song that`s being done to death.

+ As manny says, there are also a lot of classical pieces that turn up repeatedly, because every movie has to have its Piano Time, right after the leading couple have their big fight. Are they going to get back together again ? Not until each of them has done some mooching around on their own to some poignant backdrop with a piano track playing. Or if that`s considered too subtle for the movie-goers, the director might go for this instead :

I think that song gets used in a fair amount of commercials too.

Sansa Stark 04-17-2011 05:51 PM

yeah, it's pretty much everywhere, tho usually it's just the insipid "woo hoo" part
:(

Burning Down 04-17-2011 05:54 PM

I love the song though.

pooka 04-17-2011 05:55 PM

the theme to 2001. yeah its good but do we really need to hear it everywhere?

Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra? Yeah. Overused. The funny thing is, I don't think it was even a popular piece during Strauss's time. In the study of music theory and history though, it's heavily analyzed because it is a symphonic poem. I'm sure I've heard it more times than you because it was assigned as homework or something!

pooka 04-17-2011 06:06 PM

yeah thats the name of it. nice one broder.

Funky Town by Lips Inc is used a lot.

The Batlord 06-17-2011 11:25 AM

I'm amazed no one has mentioned AC/DC by now. "Thunderstruck" needs to be banned from ever being performed on another movie...ever.

BastardofYoung 06-17-2011 11:28 AM

I am sure it has been mentioned, but only one that comes to mind is "More Human Than Human".. That song was neer my favorite by White Zombie, but damn it is everywhere... and in so many movies, tv shows and stuff... I am sure Rob could live off the royalties he gets per play on that song alone. Wish he would, maybe he would stop making sh*t movies and go back to White Zombie...
