Top games for week 3

The big game is 1 Alabama at 6 Texas A&M. The Tide was complacent last year and got beat. Won't happen this year. 'Bama is favored by 9 over the Aggies, I think that's about right.

Tennessee at 2 Oregon: The betting line is 25 1/2, I would like that spread at Knoxville but in Autzen Stadium, I like the Ducks by 40. Granted, I'm a fanboy...

4 Ohio State at Cal: spread is 15 1/2 favoring the Buckeyes, they will win but I like the Golden Bears to cover

5 Stanford -28 1/2 at Army : Stanford rolls

7 Louisville at Kentucky: Cards are overrated, I like the Wildcats to not only cover the 12 1/2 but win

Kent State at 8 LSU: Tigers win and cover the 36 1/2

Nevada at 10 Florida State: 'Noles win and cover 32 1/2

im torn

see, i like sports drama but i respect greatness (patriots, spurs, alabama, etc)

but i wanna see texas a&m beat bama today. i feel like its actually a longer shot than most ppl think (last yr alabama was deflated, didnt view this as a big game ((trap game)). manziel will be such a rockstar tho and i wanna see him get love for his play instead of the media blowin this off field stuff out of proportion

Paul Smeenus 09-14-2013 06:34 PM

Let's see how I'm doing

Final score 'Bama 49, A&M 42. Pretty close ;)

Game is in the 2nd quarter right now, Buckeyes are up 31-17 and from what I've seen are DEFINITELY the class of the Big 10. They are BCS title contenders.

LSU actually did win big but did not cover, 45-13 Tigers

Final tally: I was 6-1 without factoring in the spread but a lousy 2-5 against those betting lines, the only spreads I beat was Oregon and Florida State, both of those easily

Paul Smeenus 09-20-2013 12:24 PM

My Ducks have a bye, and TBH the schedule this week isn't terribly compelling, with one good game

Week 4 picks:

Colorado State at 1 Alabama

The Tide survived a scare last week in College Station, and now a lot of people are questioning the quality of their secondary. I wouldn't wanna be CSU tomorrow, Tide will roll and cover 39 points

3 Clemson won at NC State last night, that score was closer than I would've thought but the Wolfpack is no pushover at home, as the Tigers learned last year. Besides, I don't have cable and didn't see the game, it could've been one of those closer-on-the-scoreboard-than-it-was-on-the-field type 'o deals.

Florida A&M at 4 Ohio State

The Buckeyes are favored by 49 1/2 points. That's a LOT of points, the problem with a spread like that is that by the 4th quarter OSU will doubtless have their third string in the game. It'll be a rout, for sure, I'm iffy on the spread.

23 Arizona State at 5 Stanford

This is easily the best match-up this weekend. My head tells me that Stanford will win and cover the 6 points, but I will be rooting for the upset, as it would help my Ducks

Auburn at #6 LSU

The spread is 17, LSU will want to make a statement that they belong in the conversation with Alabama for SEC power. LSU wins and covers.

Florida International at #7 Louisville

I thought last week the Cardinals were ripe for an upset, and I was wrong. Won't be any upset this week against a very poor Conference USA squad, but like the Ohio State game I'm vacillating on the spread, as the game will be decided by the second half

Bethune-Cookman at 8 Florida State

The Wildcats are actually a very good MEAC team but they're overmatched against a top tier ACC power. The Seminoles showed last week that they are perfectly content to run up the score, they will cover the 39 1/2 points

North Texas at 9 Georgia

A decent Conference USA team against an SEC power. This won't be pretty, Bulldogs cover the 33 points

Southern Methodist at 10 Texas A&M

SMU is a so-so ACC team, Manziel will shred these guys but I think SMU can beat the 28 1/2 point spread

Alabama to roll over Co. State
Ohio State U to cover and win 63-7.
Stanford to win by at least two tds over ASU.
LSU to cover the 17 over Auburn.
Lousiville to cover over Florida Intl.
FSU blows out Bethune Cookman.
Georgia covers 33 against N. Texas.
Texas A&M to cover SMU. [SMU could use some help from the pony express this weekend.]

Great non-BCS game tonight, in the 4th quarter Boise State just scored and leads 40-34, but Fresno State has the ball and is moving about 7 minutes left, great game

*edited to add: Fresno State won 41-40

A couple things

Ohio State is up 62-0 early in the third quarter

Secondly, every time I see this pic I think it, so now I'm gonna say it

Week 5 picks

21 Ole Miss at 1 Alabama

Needless to say I'm always rooting for whoever plays the Tide, as they are the only team ahead of my Ducks, but the reality is that I think "Bama is the better team, esp. in Tuscaloosa. Tide rolls and covers the 2 touchdowns

Cal at 2 Oregon

The Ducks control their own destiny, if they win out from this point they will be in the title game, be it against 'Bama or somebody else. Ducks whip tarnation outta the Bears and cover the 36 1/2 point spread with ease.

Wake Forest at 3 Clemson

I think the Tigers will come down to earth a little bit, they will win but I pick WF to beat the 28 1/2

23 Wisconsin at 4 Ohio State

Badgers are good but Buckeyes are better, they win and cover the 6 1/2

5 Stanford at Washington State

Cougs pulled a lowlife stunt IMO last week against second-division Idaho, they were up 42-0 but the Vandals were driving near the end of the game, Wazzu head coach Mike Leach sent his defensive starters back into the game to preserve the shutout. I think they think they're vastly better than they really are and will get their collective heads handed to them by the Cardinal. The spread is 9 1/2, Stanford will win by 30

6 LSU at 9 Georgia

Game of the week. LSU is favored by 3, I could go either way but I will pick LSU. If the Bulldogs win, however, I wouldn't be surprised in the least.

8 Florida State at Boston College

The 'Noles are favored by 23. Yeah, that. :)

10 Texas A&M at Arkansas

Aggies are favored by 14 1/2, I think they'll win but I take the Razorbacks to beat the spread

Update on the Ducks/Cal game. Weather throughout the western Pacific Northwest is going to be absolutely horrendous tomorrow. Record rainfall and gale winds are expected in the Eugene area.

As such I'm modifying my pick, the Ducks will win but may not cover in those conditions

Paul Smeenus 09-28-2013 01:36 PM

Another pick will be weather affected, Stanford/Wazzu will be played at CenturyLink Field in Seattle in this ugly storm, I still pick Stanford to win and cover but I'm backing down off of 30 points. Unless it's 30-0. It'll be hard to score much in these conditions.

The Ducks covered this spread by the mid-second quarter. And the weather was every bit as nasty as I'd described. I was right until I decided to factor in the weather. It's currently 55-10 Ducks 10 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and I expect that will be the final. Both teams seem to want to get the hell out of the torrential rain. Almost none of the 55,000 in Autzen Stadium are still in the stands.

(As I was typing this, Cal scored a TD but missed the XP, score now 55-16, that is now a final)

Oh, and one other thing

This may not be true. The AP polls are currently the accepted rankings, but the BCS polls will be coming out soon, and that's what really counts. For all I know the BCS might put Clemson or Ohio State in that #2 spot.

Speaking of Clemson and Ohio State...

Finals: Clemson wins 56-7 (I continue to under-appreciate the Tigers), Ohio State wins 31-24 (I covered that one with ZERO room to spare)

Week 6 picks

Georgia St. at 1 Alabama

Betting line currently favors 'Bama by 54 1/2. I hate these cupcake games, because the favorite has their second team in the game by halftime and the third string in by the 4th quarter. However, I think 'Bama could *start* their third string and cover this spread

2 Oregon at Colorado

The Ducks won by 39 against Cal in a freaking MONSOON last Saturday in Eugene even without DeAnthony Thomas, the Buffaloes were blown out of Corvallis against a good but nowhere-near-as-good-as-the-Ducks Oregon State team. The spread is 38 1/2. This is a mortal lock. Bet the house on the Ducks.

3 Clemson at Syracuse

I'm tired of underestimating Clemson. They will cover the 13 1/2

4 Ohio State at 16 Northwestern

The Wildcats are currently undefeated. The Buckeyes are undefeated. One team will have a loss at the end of this game, and it ain't gonna be Ohio State. They cover the seven points with ease.

15 Washington at 5 Stanford

I'm in the EXTREMELY unfamiliar position of rooting for the Huskies. If they can somehow win this game, my Ducks have a game up on their primary Pac 12 North competition. However, that would also likely vault the Huskies into the top 10 with a showdown next week against Oregon in the new Husky Stadium. It would definitely bring the ESPN Gameday show to Seattle. (and BTW most of the country has NO IDEA of the boiling, bitter hatred for the Ducks here, it makes the rivalry with Wazzu look like a full-on bromance. This town HATES the Ducks)

BUT...it ain't gonna happen. Washington is much improved but Stanford is better. The Cardinal easily covers the 7 1/2.

6 Georgia at Tennessee

Spread is 10 1/2. Bulldogs win by 20.

7 Louisville at Temple

Another team I've consistently underrated. Louisville is favored by 32 against the winless Owls. I've learned my lesson and I'm taking the Cardinals

25 Maryland at 8 Florida State

I've picked the favorite in every game so far, I will take the 15 1/2 and go with the Terps in this one, not to win but to beat the spread.

10 LSU at Mississippi State

LSU is favored by 9 1/2, they will be PISSED after the loss to Georgia, bet the farm on LSU

The Tide score 38 in the first half and 7 in the second (and zero in the 4th quarter). That's what I meant about cupcake games. Final 45-3 'Bama, they do not cover

This was a great game, Stanford juuuuust barely hangs on 31-28 on an overturned 4th down completion on what would have been a first down in range for a long tying field goal. It was, however, the right call

Week 7 picks

1 Alabama at Kentucky

The Tide is favored by 27 over the Wildcats, one of the SEC doormats. I think that's just about right.

2 Oregon at 16 Washington

This is the game of the week. These two schools HATE each other. Oregon hates Washington because they've been the dominant Northwest program for DECADES until recent years, and the Duck fans resent the sense of entitlement, like the wealthy snobs that look down their noses at their blue collar middle class neighbors. Husky fans view Oregon as "new money" low class trailer trash, but what they REALLY resent is that the Ducks have won 9 in a row by an average score of 44-17.

I hate the Huskies, but I am duty bound to recognize that they have a vastly better team this year than they've had in many years and have a shot at winning this game, especially in the new Husky Stadium. The problem they have, IMO, is that they're playing a fast pace style, which totally plays into the hands of the unquestioned masters of the uptempo offense. The Ducks also have an under-appreciated opportunistic defense. I have to admit I have some concern over this game but my gut tells me that the Husky fans are really gonna be pissed after the shellacking they are gonna get on Saturday, Ducks cover the two touchdown margin.

Boston College at 3 Clemson

Clemson is favored by 27 1/2, they win and cover

5 Stanford at Utah

Cardinal is favored by 9. This is a mortal lock, Stanford blows the Utes away

25 Missouri at 7 Georgia

The spread favors the Bulldogs by 7 1/2. Mortal lock number two, Georgia will definitely cover this

Rutgers at 8 Louisville

I continue to under-appreciate the Cardinals, I think they will win but I pick Rutgers to beat the 19 1/2 point spread. This game kicks off tonight at 7:30 EDT

9 Texas A&M at Ole Miss

Spread is 6 favoring the Aggies, the Rebels are actually a pretty good team but it's hard to bet against Johnny Football. I take the Aggies

17 Florida at 10 LSU

Tigers are favored by 7, they win and cover.

17 Florida at 10 LSU

Tigers are favored by 7, they win and cover.

Alabama to cover by 35. The Tide is so strong up front they will literally destroy that weak d-line.

Huskies haven't really been relevant since the Napoleon Kaufman era. They will get pounded by Oregon. Oregon to cover by 28 points.

Clemson to win and cover also. Boyd is one helluva gun slinger and that D is solid.

Stanford will dominate and win by 30. Not sure where the betting line was factored but apparently a four year old set the line.

I'm torn on the Georgia game. They looked very mortal last week. I sense Missou covering the spread. Georgia to win with mizzou covering the spread.

Louisville to cover the spread. They will absolutely pummel a poor Rutgers team. I see them running the ball down their throats the entire game.

Aggies over Ole Miss by a ton. I figure a four touchdown beat down by J-football.

Tigers by 7 indeed. I'll go with a two touchdown beatdown.

That may have been true in recent years but this Husky team is better. They gave Stanford all they could handle. Plus it's here in Seattle, and the renovated Husky Stadium will be LOUD.

If this game is available in your area, watch it. I can't overemphasize how BITTER this rivalry is, even though in recent years the Ducks have dominated. The closest game was 34-17 in this nine game run.

An update, DeAnthony Thomas is doubtful for this game.

Thats definitely a hit losing thomas. Jordan Thompson? I think he'll make the hit less painful. I can't remember the other backs last name Kenny something? I think they will do just fine. I like Oregons speed to take it to Washington.

Paul Smeenus 10-10-2013 05:02 PM

Bralon Addison is also a powerful weapon for Oregon. Then of course there's Mariota...

You got me here Fred. Final Mizzou 41-26

Paul Smeenus 10-12-2013 06:42 PM

Fecking Stanford is losing to the Utes! I'm gonna be 0-2 on my "mortal locks" today. This also helps my Ducks who clobbered the Fuskies 45-24

*edit: Utah 27-Stanford 21 final

Final 48-7 Tide. I'm going to accept this as a win

Neener Neener Neener to Husky Nation, 45-24 Ducks. Mariota became the unquestioned front-runner for the Heisman in this game. Ten blowouts in a row by the Ducks over the hated Fuskies

They juuuust barely squeaked out a 24-14 win, setting up what is NOW a top 5 matchup next Saturday with idle Florida State, BECAUSE

Stanford 21, Utes 27, the shocker of the day in a day full of shockers.

So much for my "mortal locks", I went 0-2. Stanford kept this from being the shocker of the day. 41-26 Mizzou.

The Aggies *do* win, thanks again to the heroics of Manziel, but fail to cover 41-38

What's the fun in that?

Week 8 picks

Arkansas at 1 Alabama

The Tide's tour through the SEC basement continues against the Razorbacks. Spread is 28, 'Bama covers

Washington State at 2 Oregon

The Cougs got murdered by Oregon State in the Paloose last weekend, it only gets worse traveling to Eugene. Oregon just crushed Wazzu here in Seattle a year ago at a game attended by yours truly

(that's me saying the Ducks are all about speed)

Oregon always wins against the lower echelon teams, that will continue against the Cougs, although as I've said I hate these cupcake spreads, I dunno if they'll cover the 38 1/2 points. If they don't it'll only be because they let their foot off the gas in the 4th quarter.

5 Florida State at 3 Clemson

This is the unquestioned game of the week, even considering a very compelling Pac-12 game. Both undefeated, that will change this weekend. One team will be #3 (at least in the AP poll, which won't matter at all once the first BCS rankings are released after the Saturday games, who knows what that's going to produce), the other will probably still be in the top 10 unless it's a blowout.

Interestingly, Florida State is favored by a field goal even though it's a Tigers home game. I dunno, I'm totally torn, I say pick 'em. I guess I'll take the Death Valley advantage and the Tigers.

Iowa at 4 Ohio State

I take the Buckeyes and surrender the 17 points with no fear whatsoever.

6 LSU at Ole Miss

This is a decent Rebels team but LSU is better. Bet the farm on the Tigers covering the 8 points

24 Auburn at 7 Texas A&M

Surprising Auburn will not be ranked next week, Aggies cover the 12 1/2

Central Florida at 8 Louisville

I dunno why the spread is only 12 1/2, this is an easy pick for Louisville. This is a Friday night kickoff.

9 UCLA at 13 Stanford

The Cardinal were caught by surprise against the Utes in SLC last weekend (thinking ahead to UCLA?). That will not happen this weekend. With all respect to the Bruins, whom I believe will be in but lose the Pac-12 championship game, Stanford will be back in the top 10 next weekend (although I think UCLA might beat the 5 1/2 points)

10 Miami (FL) at North Carolina

Are the 'Canes knocking on the door to a return to their glory days? I think they are but aren't there yet. They will win and cover the 9 points tomorrow night, but IMO either Clemson or FSU would take 'em down in the ACC.

Arkansas gets pummeled repeatedly at Alabama which covers the spread. Remember when Arkansas had elite players? Yeah me neither.

Oregon Covers against Wazzu, Poor Wazzu they probably wish Ryan Leaf would come back.

I'm not really sold on Clemson honestly after last weeks game. I think at home they do just enough damage to win a close game. FSU favored by a field goal? GTFO

Iowa gets clobbered by Ohio State. If the spread were 60 pts i'd still pick the buckeyes.

LSU to beat Ole Miss and cover. I like Ole Miss also and think they have some potantial, but LSU is in the drivers seat in this game.

Texas A&M covers against Auburn. Johnny do it all with a bustout game.

I like UCLA against Stanford. I think they use the film from the Stanford game and abuse that poor defense of Stanford.

Hurricane to cover against the Tar Heels. NC usually has a good defense but Miami looks like the real deal this year.
