Guitar FX pedal help.

Alright, so I own a Line6 Spider III 15 watt amp and might get a Line6 SpiderIV 15watt amp. I might possibly get a Peavy Venom.
Other than that, can anyone suggest a good guitar effects pedal to use at a show? My friend told me to get a boss but I don't think they are compatible with Line6.

There's no problem of compatability with guitar FX pedals, you just plug your guitar into them (with a 1/4" jack cable) and plug them into the amp with another 1/4" jack cable.

If you're looking for a foot controller for your amp, just look up which one the manufacturer suggests, It's probably written in the manual, but that's a different thing.

I've been playing guitar for over 4 years and it's surprising I don't know what this stuff does. Could you give me reccomendations on what to get for my line6 spider III?

I want a deep sound like Lamb Of God, Ask Alexandria, Bullet For My Valentine, Alexisonfire, Trivium, A static lullaby, Atryu, and so on.

You probably want a distortion or overdrive pedal of some kind. The pretty standard ones would be a Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, the Boss DS-2, or the Ibanez Tubescreamers, all of which sound good. You can get a pretty heavy sound out of the Boss DS-2, the Big Muff is more moderate, I know John Frusciante used one on the solo to Scar Tissue by RHCP so if you want to hear one listen to that. The tubescreamers are fairly gentle too.

Your best bet really is to look up which pedals the guitar players whose sound you want to emulate use. Just google their names followed by 'setup' or 'rig' and you should get some decent results.

You could always go to the music shop and try a few out too...

Also, your Line Six amp should have some effects onboard too, read the manual and figure out what it's capable of before you start buying other effects.

the best effect pedal to use for a show is the one you use to practice with. after all it'll be the one(s) that you know best and are able to use to their fullest potential.

if you really don't have any clue on what kind of pedal to get, the musicophile's suggestion of checking out your idols' setups is a great place to start. BUT, just because one musician used a pedal one way doesn't mean it's all it's about. Frusciante using a big muff for the solo on Scar Tissue is a rather weak example of what that pedal does compared to just about anything the Smashing Pumpkins ever released. at the same time though, it's also indicative of the range of distortion tones those pedals offer.

for dry modern metal sounds you'll likely want some sort of distortion pedal that offers some level of EQ control. like a Boss Metal Zone or something - but ultimately, like any other piece of gear, the only way to find the right one for you is to actually go to the store and try out different things until you find the right one for your ears.
