I have an Ibanez JS1200 and a lot of other guitars.

I really want a Fender Stratocaster

DoctorSoft 07-02-2010 01:26 PM

I have a Strat and a cheap acoustic.

I want either a Jazzmaster or an ES 335.

save up for it. you won't regret it. :thumb:

it's really that simple, make a plan and stick with it. i scrimped and saved at a part time job for $5 an hour for 9 straight months before i got mine ('94 mexican). you better believe it felt AWESOME when i dropped that cash and took it home back in the day.

Yeah. I've played on a Fender Strat in my school. I LOVE PLAYING HENDRIX and stuff like that. It just sounds amazing on a fender!

mr dave 07-03-2010 12:06 PM

^ oh yeah, Hendrix is the man and you're right, it just doesn't feel right on anything but a strat.

what kind do they have at your school?

Nothing against Hendrix but to buy a guitar for this reason isnt enough by me. The strat is so much more than a blues/rock machine. With the exception of maybe death metal I am yet to see a genre a strat cannot overcome.

Currently saving up for a Danelectro 59.

I would love to get a Paul Reed Smith electric. But alas, I cannot afford one =(

agreed but flip it over. don't think of it as buying the guitar because you like Hendrix, but, what other guitar would you get if you really liked Hendrix?

Farfisa 07-04-2010 03:28 PM

He played a Jazzmaster, flying v, and a hagstrom 8 string bass among other basses and guitars. People need to get over this whole fucking strat obsession. If I'm correct he was all about being original and different and if he were to see every fucking teenager and their dad get a strat because it was his main guitar, he'd pull a Kurt Cobain.

I think hendrix would sound like hendrix on a roland 20x cube and a Ibanez 7 string.

I have a Fender Stratocaster. I would like to get a Les Paul someday.

you missed my point.

it's not about what Hendrix would do. it's about what would someone who likes Hendrix do. why would someone who wants to play Hendrix type stuff get anything but a strat?

@LLSS - yeah he played lots of other kinds of instruments. he didn't get the factory to keep a constant supply on hand for anything but the strat. he understood it was iconic and seen as his trademark instrument. also being original and different in the late 60s meant being a big star in his own right without obvious strings attached, not becoming some nutjob recluse desperate to maintain individual integrity from the masses. the guy wanted to be a rock and roll star.

again, where the vast majority of the material he played and performed was done on one kind of guitar, why deny it? why the hate and backlash towards something so iconic?

i was getting worried for a moment, and i also totally agree with you that if Hendrix were still around it wouldn't matter AT ALL what he plugged into, he would still sound like Jimi.

doesn't it make you wonder why no folk artist has ever wanted one of these? I looked on youtube for this model and found only metalheads stroking their cocks. It really makes me sad that 7 strings are looked at as metal guitars. I mean, that low B would be perfect as a route note while finger picking away and I can only Imagine the fucked up tunings I would be able to come up with.

john_alexander 07-12-2010 11:43 AM

Basslabs L-Bow bass. I don't like or dislike the look (but I love the look of my current Godin A5), but the look doesn't matter; I love the sound! I had a chance to try one out once, about six months ago, and now I'm desperately saving up with my minimum wage job to get the roughly $5000 money to get one!

Just got a Takamine EG-334C series electric acoustic guitar, does anyone here know anything about them? It plays very well, the fingerboard has great action, and I got it at a great price! far less than half the cost of a new one.

AaronMitchell 07-25-2010 03:07 PM

I have a Simon & Patrick Woodland Folk Cedar with soundhole pick-up, an Ibanez PF 105S NT, a Yamaha G-225 (mid 70's), and a Washburn electric.

I'm pretty happy with my options right now, but in the future if I might want a nice Takamine, or maybe a Guild. Dunno though... I'll see. An old strat would be nice too. And I'll admit, I've always wanted to see what a 7-string is like. It'd be kind of cool to have that extra bass string... so I could have it tuned CEADGBE or something like that. But hose are expensive, and it'd probably cost more to fix and stuff being that it's kind of a 'specialty' guitar. You'd need special pieces and all.

edit: Plus, I've got bass hands anyways... so being able to wrap the thumb around for the bass notes on the C, or B or whatever it's tuned to would make for some pretty sweet sounds. Finger picking, or even just playing away on the regular 6 strings and thrwoing the occasional thumb to the bass for a cool walking bassline with whatever riff or chords you're playing.

I have always wanted to try downtuning the lowest 3 string a step or two and leaving the others in standard. I figure it would almost sound piano like with separate bass and soprano parts.

this is a common misconception. there are plenty of relatively cheap 7 strings out there. you can get Jay Turser 7s in the same range an epiphone les paul or a mexican strat if not cheaper.

personally i didn't like 7 strings the few times i tried it - and i'm a person who had absolutely no issues going from 4 to 5 strings on bass - but adding that extra string to a guitar just made the whole thing feel wrong in my hands. more power to anyone who digs playing them though, don't ever have to worry about me ripping them off or giving their instruments belt rash.

@RezZ - similar to the idea of downtuning half the strings and leaving the other in standard - have you ever looked into 10 string guitars? i think BC Rich started them with the Rich Bitch back in the day. the two lowest strings are left like normal then the 4 higher strings are doubled.

Just this... Epiphone Junior Model. It's kind of plain and all I have is some tiny amp, but hey it's something!

mr dave 07-29-2010 01:40 PM

^ nothing at all wrong with that, especially if you're just starting out. i rocked a low end epiphone for years and had a blast with it. never actually seen a Epi Jr. before, i'm liking it. :thumb:

DreamTheater 07-29-2010 01:57 PM

lol ya i brought it to my science class way back in 8th grade and my science teacher started kicking major a.ss on it, that inspired me that maybe there is something more to it.

definitely. your sound comes from your hands and your heart. a high quality instrument simply accentuates your abilities. plus developing the ability to make a 'crap' quality instrument sing means you'll have the chops to really push a quality piece of gear to its limits when you finally get your hands on something really nice someday.

The_Mop 08-17-2010 07:27 PM

I've got a Rockbass fretless 5 string. It sounds about 300 quid more expensive than it was, and is built like a brick ****house. Price wise, good enough to start with. Quality wise, good enough to keep going with.

Bought it mainly for something decent to record with, my dad's old aria bass is completely battered. Still sounds decent enough, but only with decent modelling. Through a flat amp, sounds like ass.

If you spend a little more you can get a much nicer guitar. Those Epiphone Les Paul Customs are amazing for there price. I got one for 300 used, and it plays like a much more expensive guitar once setup properly. If you put new pickups and nut in you have your self something that rivals many gibson's.

I've been there. All I had was an acoustic for the first few years of playing. I got really clean picking technique down and somehow I just appreciate my electric more every time I play because of the experience. It certainly makes you tone oriented later.

Been playin' for slightly more than 1/2 year, maybe 3/4 year, i love it as much as i love trumpet.
