Soak your strings in alcohol and you'll keep them a lot longer.

I rock it with my Mousegetar Jr. by Disney. Four stings and a crank on the bottom of the body that plays the Mickey Mouse Club theme.

Holy hell, the tone monster I could buy with that kinda loot.

Congrats on the purchase though, a talented musician with such a rich musical background such as yourself deserves it. Will be expecting some showcase posts. *nudge* *nudge*

I'd really like a bass flute as well, but maybe when I'm richer. Some of them cam cost upwards of $30,000. I also really want a rose gold soprano flute, but that's $12K.

Yeah I will post some performances when I get the flute!

That's the drawback of classical music instruments--they ain't cheap. $7500 is about average for a double bass. I've seen basses for over $30,000 but I'm not buying that anyway. But $6000 to $8000 is about what you have to shell out for a decent one. Then there's the bow and that's about $1200 or so. Might find a really good one for $700 if you luck into it. Again, I've seen bows that go for $5000. It's just not going to go to me.

My wife's cello was $15,000 but for the level she plays at, it's worth it. Her piano she got from her mother who is also a classical pianist--a big Steinway grand. I'd say it's probably about $13,000 to $15,000 brand new but this one has been in her family for a couple of generations. I don't know if that raises the value or not.

I don't know anything about flutes so I'm surprised and not surprised by the price. But glad you're getting it. Isn't it just exhilarating as hell getting that new axe?!!?!

Ha, tell me about it. My boyfriend is a pianist mainly, and he also plays violin. Both of which are quite pricey when you want a good quality instrument.

Flute prices are based mostly on the materials used to make it. Good quality flutes ($2,000 +) are generally made from solid silver tubing, and plated with sterling silver. Price then varies depending on the intricate detail and customization of the instrument. Many flute players have the head joint (mouthpiece) custom made to their specifications, based on their playing style and the quality of tone they want to obtain. Factory pressed head joints are suitable but not ideal for the advanced flutist.

Flutes can also be made of materials like rose gold, 14 to 24 karat gold, and platinum. Those are much, much more expensive and often they are custom made. There are also the larger flutes and also the piccolo, which is surprisingly expensive, even the lower quality ones. Platinum flutes are rare because they are expensive. I saw one online the other day that was on the cheaper end of the spectrum, at $56,000.

I paid about $1200 for my electric bass rig and $200 for my acoustic. It'd just effin' suck to not be able to afford to buy the instrument I play. Sure I could spend that much on high end stuff but what I have is perfectly serviceable and sounds fine. Yay affordable gear

Guitarists are lucky that their instruments don't generally cost a whole lot of money. I've never heard of someone financing a guitar, unless it is specifically custom made (and usually when you're ordering custom made you have the cash to pay for it upfront). Cheap guitars and amps can actually sound very good. Cheap orchestral instruments sound like absolute shit, especially the cheap $1000 or less flutes, as they are made of brass and very heavy (brass is really only suitable for saxes and brass instruments - d'oh).

I considered leasing the alto flute that I bought, it's much like leasing a car. But I thought, wow I could just wait and put that money into my savings account every month so I could just buy my own. Leasing just means it's not yours, it's a long term rental. I'd rather have my own.

Newest addition to my increasingly large instrument collection. Doing it as a "rent-to-own" program with only $25 a month. It's got a few dings though that I wish we went over in the store but oh well, it plays beautifully.

Nice! Are you learning it? I had to learn the basics of violin in school and coming from a bass (and guitar) background, I had to get over the initial shock of not having frets (so having to remember to place my fingers absolutely correctly on the fingerboard). And that the strings are GDAE. And a few other things, like how to tune it properly, lol.

My boyfriend plays violin quite well though.

LoathsomePete 11-23-2013 06:06 PM

I play mandolin as well which uses the same tuning and has a very similar scale so the only hard part has been getting use to the bow. I got this cool "First Fret" sticker thing which puts imaginary frets on the fingerboard so I can learn and memorize the positions.

I've seen those stickers! I never had to use them as I used my boyfriend's violin which has a well-worn fingerboard. So I would place my fingers where his fingers had been before, haha. Getting used to the bow will take a couple of weeks with regular practice, especially learning to hold it properly at the frog. Also make sure you use the rosin so you'll be able to make a sound!

I was a little overzealous with the rosin and now my strings are caked with the stuff.

You can just wipe it off, no problems there. Wipe the extra off the bow as well, and from then on you will only need one or two layers of rosin. I've done it too!

I have just received my new treble recorder, a Moeck Denner, 442 Hz.
The sounds is amazing, I can't wait until the wood became accustomed to the warmth.
Maybe I'll be able to play 30 minutes within 1 month if it all works out.

LennyComa 11-29-2013 10:30 PM

I used to have (Before it got destroyed) a Pearl Maple Drum-set, Dark Purple, Single Kick. 2 Snares (I added a Yamaha Piccolo Snare to it fore a more snappy sound in some of our Pop - ier songs.) Skins were a Tama 2-Ply for the snares and kick, and Tama single Ply for the Toms. My cymbols were Sonar Stage ready with an added Zildjian AA 14 inch Crash.

IvanMC 12-01-2013 09:42 PM

I've had a Charvel/Jackson since about 1993 (I was overjoyed when I got to know G. Govan was keen on Charvel!). My brother made me a supreme 7-string guitar about 2 years ago, which had been my dream for a long, long while: I can't whinge at all: both of them are top-notch instruments. Not a lot of pedals in my life, though: Boss CE-5 (Chorus), Boss Digital Delay (DD-3) and the glorious -and orange- DS-1. Now I can't make up my mind, but I've been thinking of a HR-2 or PS-6 (Boss). Of course there's a CryBaby Wah in my life as well. Amplification is through a Marshall Valvestate 8100: not really elated at it.

Last instrument for a little while, I'm starting to become the crazy cat lady of folk instruments.

Frownland 12-07-2013 04:34 PM

Is that a banjolin? Those are a lot of fun to play. My friend had an antique one from the 1920s and it worked fantastically as a slide (action was ridiculously high so that was the only option bar playing open strings or very high up frets) and percussive instrument. Also, I've never had a bad Gretsch experience, so I'm sure that yours will be just as great!

LoathsomePete 12-07-2013 04:46 PM

It's a banjo-ukulele, although I would like to get a banjolin at some point.

I've become a very big Gretsch fan this year, my banjo is a Gretsch Broadcaster and my mandolin is a Gretsch New Yorker, all of which sound pretty good and were very reasonably priced.

Frownland 12-07-2013 05:05 PM

Haha of course it's a uke, I forgot about the string difference because my friend has a mandocaster with 4 strings. One Gretsch product I must own in my lifetime is their dobro. I've played around 6 different dobros but the two Gretsch models I've played really took the cake and had such a great sound that was unique from the rest.

Plankton 12-09-2013 09:57 AM

So a couple of weeks ago I purchased an alto flute. I finally got it yesterday and there are mechanical problems with it. Honestly I think flute makers are getting shoddier with their craftsmanship. I think the way to go next time is completely 100% custom made, but that can cost as much as a high end luxury car. I'm f*cking pissed

Ouch. It's a shame you can't play before you pay as with most instruments I'm familiar with. I've played some very expensive guitars that were utter crap and would've been ready to kill something/somebody if I had purchased blind.

You'll most likely be able to have it worked on (right?), but thats more $$ of course.

I feel for ya BD. I hate big money purchases.

I always try play before I buy. Alto flute are hard to find in store though, they are generally custom made to your specifications (and same with bass flutes). But I found this one in store, played it, and loved it. The problem is that it has a couple of faulty screws and the trill keys weren't working right. Every wind player will tell you that a screw that is turned even an 8th of a turn will throw the whole thing out of tune. It's not expensive to fix, since I'm a regular customer and they give me discounts all the time, but I'm frustrated.

It's my first time buying a flute at that store (not going to say in case they monitor their reviews through Google or anything), and while I don't think they did anything wrong, they insinuated that I broke the instrument when I brought it home. Funny, because when I bought a guitar there last year and brought it right back to fix some scratches that were there already, they never batted an eye.

I bought my soprano C flute at the Flute World store in Detroit (when I was down that way - I didn't purposely drive 5 hours for a flute, lol), and I had no problems. Sigh.

I know this will blow over soon enough and I'll have a beautiful instrument in my hands, but for now I'm just annoyed.

enbarre 12-12-2013 09:21 AM

I'm playing on a Classic Player Jazzmaster for 4 years now. In love. Have (as everybody else I guess) to change the bridge in a couple of weeks. I'm playing on a Fender BluesJr.
I also have a Washburn mandoline, a Cort Bass, a Casio SK1 and other childish stuff (Ukulélé, Bontempi Keyboard), and a Asama Drums set (with some yamaha pads).

Pasidon 12-14-2013 06:10 AM

Jazzmasters are the jazz masters. As intended.

It's pretty ****ed up that I've spent around that much on pedals alone.

Plankton 12-16-2013 08:15 AM

I've never really been big into pedals. I used to have a DOD Death Metal pedal that was my favorite for years but have since gone the multi-effects expression pedal route for quite a few years while starting with a small Zoom back in the 00's. Then the cat pissed on it and ruined it so I had to go bigger. The cat and me have since made amends.

Jukeboxfin 12-30-2013 06:28 PM

I have a ukulele and it's blue.

Sequoioideae 12-30-2013 06:55 PM

I decided I'd add up all of the gear I have in my room currently for ****s and giggles.

Guitars
Fender Telecaster '72 custom RI - 450$ used
Martin DCX1E - 600$ used with hardshell case
Fender Jaguar '65 RI - 2700$ new with insurance and case

Pedals
DE Torn's Peaker - 60$ new
DE Punch Love - 60$ used
DE Disaster Fuzz - 100$ new
EHX Big Muff NYC - 50$ new
ProCo Rat - 90$ new (not in working condition atm)
Ibanez DE7 - 70$ new
EHX Pulsar - 85$ new
Custom ProCo Rat copy with white noise circuit - 200$
MXR 10 band EQ -120$ new
Dunlop Crybaby 535Q - 140$ new
Catalinbread Montavillian - 160$ new
Hardwire RV-7 - 150$ new
Boss OC-3 - 130$ new

Amp

Crate V18 - 150$ new (Unfortunately, it's all I have for right now, but it's pretty good considering that it's actually a crate.)

Total - 5275$

The next thing I'm going to do is gut the crate, turn it into a cab and run a Fender Blues Deluxe through it.

Dr_Rez 12-30-2013 07:30 PM

@alex: You have a lot of pedals I am very interested in hearing, especially that MXR Eq. I have never had much success with pedal Eq's in a chain. I wouldnt crap on crate that much I used to own a Blackheart tube amp made by crate and it sounded AMAZING, unfortunately I had to sell it.

Plankton I liked your picture so I threw my **** up on one as well. The cab is borrowed though unfortunately and the wah broke. Need a new one.
