I've got a Yamaha-SY85 synth, which was uber-expensive and I've had it since I was about 13. Quite why my parents decided to buy me the most expensive - and heaviest - item in the music shop is beyond me. Its got lots of functions like multi-track sequencing, drum-beat programming and multi-timbral instrument thingys. None of these interest me. I like it because all of the sounds it makes are good quality and because it has quite a lot of notes, so I can bash away on the bass and trebles to my hearts content.

The keyboard is too heavy though, it takes one person's full attention to carry it, no mutlitasking with this baby.

shatteredheartfallendream 04-12-2006 08:16 AM

I just started playing guitar, but I've got a "frankenstein". For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a "homemade" guitar made from a couple of other guitars. I guess mines a Harmony/Fender I think.

It depends on what I'm playing, I like my Schecter more because it has substance and I know that it is there. It is an odd habit but if I pick up a guitar and I can feel it I won't like it. And my Schecter has a larger tone area. Plus the Ibanez needs to be fitted with some better single coils.

And just as a statement I'm flat broke from all of that stuff, it sounds great but I don't think I'll be getting anything besides a Hardshell for my Schecter in the next year (I'm turning 16 this year and I want to be able to buy a junker)

getting a 7 string guitar need info

My band plays in drop c,..cgcfad.. i currently play the ec-100 esp. im getting a seven string sc-207 esp. im putting emg 81/60 on it. i need to know how to tune it to drop c and still play in key with my band. and also a suggested string guage for it :band:

Alfred 08-15-2008 01:59 PM

I own very cheap equipment. My guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Special II, quite cheapy. It's got a few dings in it, which I don't mind because it's not very detailed, and in my opinion, makes it look better. I bought it used. I don't even own my own amp, though. It's my dad's. It's a 15 Watt Traynor amp. I'd like a new guitar, and my own amp.

If I get another guitar, I'm getting either a hollowbody or a Fender.

My mic is an Apex850 (I do some vocals in my band). I had the cable modified at the store where I bought it. Instead of an XLR plug, the guy stuck a 1/4 male plug on it, so I can plug it into a guitar amp for our band practices, as well as a mixer for gigs.

mr dave 08-15-2008 09:16 PM

oh man this is totally gonna be an ego jerk fest here :yikes: you've been warned...

alright. from the oldest to the newest.

oldest piece i still have is a DOD fx-53 classic tube distortion pedal. it's red. i got it in 1993. the battery cable shorts out so i sometimes have to play footsies with it to get it going right. i remember seeing some blurb in a guitar magazine years ago about keith richards using one or something. so if it's good enough for keef hehe it's a nice subtle fuzz, i really like it on bass, not too overbearing.

next would be my mexican strat. picked it up on my 19th birthday. three colour sunburst, white pickguard, and rosewood fretboard. not really that uncommon but it's mine. i have a 'nicer' guitar but this one just feels right, even if the 17th fret on the G string sometimes craps up, and the pot from the low E on the bridge pickup has fallen into the housing hehe i've given serious thought about getting new pickups but i'm kind of liking the idea of keeping it original.

also picked up a VOX wah that same day. i somehow lost the little rubber stoppers that padded the front of the rocker so now it tends to shut off if i get a little too enthusiastic with my foot rocking hehe

a year later i picked up a marshall valvestate 40. it's got a 12" speaker. a nice gain channel and retarded highs hehe. this thing could peel paint. it's freaking awesome heh

i got an acoustic from my mom as a gift that christmas  it's a yamaha fg-170. i think it's from the 70s. it's got a really narrow center so it's got a lower tone than traditional dreadnought builds. i remember the sears christmas catalog selling guitars shaped like that as 'womens' guitars to accommodate for boobies heh

next was a 'capri'. it's got a fleur de lys on it. it's got the basic shape of a les paul with a flat top. it's like a red burst. extra crusty pickups and knobs. but it does have two tones and volumes. AND it stays in tune. it also has kickass soundgarden tone hehe

by this point i was due for a bass. happened to be in halifax one fine december evening back in 1997. has stopped into a mall for a quick bite, friend i was there with knew someone at an eatery there. plus we could avoid rush hour traffic. so as we're on our way out we spot a consignment shop in the mall so we wander through. cheeseball salesman sees me eyeing a beat up black aria pro II cat series bass missing the low E. they had $225 on the sticker. they said it came with a case. i offered $200 cash. turns out there was also a set of bells in the case. like the kind you'd find on top of really old telephones with the crank handle on the side to get the juice going or something. so armed with my new gear we head out. into the first snow of the season. about a half inch of fluffy powder over wet pavement, in a city my friend didn't really like driving in. what should have been a 10 minute drive turned into a 3 hour adventure haha not sure what happened to the bells though. kind of bummed that i can't find them anymore. the bass is covered in pokemon stickers now. the handle on the case is super loose too but otherwise solid.

then at the start of my second year of college i used some of my freshly gained student loan money to get an epiphone special II. it's all black. beat to crap. had to duct tape the strap at the neck. didn't stay in tune. decided to replace the pegs myself since the guitar wasn't worth that much. made the mistake of getting really stoned first and put the pegs in backwards so now you need to twist the knobs 'backwards' to tune the guitar but now it STAYS in tune hehehe i lent it to a friend about a year ago so he could try picking up the instrument.

speaking of stoned near the end of college a friend of mine and his girlfriend had made the mistake of smoking their profits and didn't have cash when the dude came by to collect so i bailed them out and in return she gave me an old guitar she had in high school. so no name sears model thing. double cutaway all black. weird tremolo setup but no bar. it's been becoming my fretless guitar for about 5 years now. i'm pretty freaking lazy sometimes hehe

then came the night i was playing pool with friends here in town about two years later. i had been talking about wanting a 5 string fretless bass for a few months and never really thought i'd find one. anyway, on our way out we got pizza from a spot across the street and while waiting i decided to peak at what was available in the pawn shop across the street. lo and behold on top of the counter a bass. no frets. and 5 strings. this was at like 1 in the morning on a saturday night. i was in there on monday with cash. turns out it was a samick. i'm satisfied but i haven't tried any others. not exactly common out here.

which brings us to my most recent guitar. a while back i was turning 30, getting a good tax return, and decided i wanted a brand new guitar. something really nice, i hadn't had a brand new guitar since my fender (i had another one prior to that for 2 years). so i started looking at les pauls but then someone pointed out a curvy line of esp guitars. the eclipse and LTD EC series. went straight for the top, the EC-1000 in vintage black. it's WAY nicer than the pics too.

i've since picked up 3 more amps also

a warwick sweet 15 for my bass. it's got surprising low end definition for it's size. the low B comes through clear.

have a traynor ts-140. some custom job from the 80s. i got it dirt cheap since it was kind of messed up. meaning only 1 of the 5 inputs work. the switch to change channels doesn't work so it's stuck on fuzz. the reverb doesn't work. but the EQ does and so does the gain. and it's FREAKING loud.

i also picked up one of the best little practice amps money can buy. a peavey rage.

as for my pedals just scroll to the end of this thread. http://www.musicbanter.com/talk-inst...ect-pedal.html

i'm not really one for selling gear

lucifer_sam 08-17-2008 12:27 AM

Ibanez AEG20E. Recently replaced the strings with Dean Markley Alchemy strings, verrrry pretty. I'm not an audiophile but the tone on this thing is very warm, and I likes it.

Azothoth 08-17-2008 03:38 AM

i play guitar and bass, 4-8 strings, mainly a 6 stringer, an ESP M-II uc i've lightly customized through an Engl Savage 120 watt tube head through a V30 loaded 4x12, effect through a pedal board. i have 7 string as well but for guitars i choose ESP without question and Engl for amps:tramp:

Koolpenguin89 09-08-2008 09:36 PM

I've been playing guitar for 7 years (since i was 10 years old). My first guitar was a 3/4 size classical acoustic, which i still have and is fun to bring with me when Im hanging out with my friends. 2 years after that, i bought a custom built strat from a local family owned music shop. Its got an HSH pickup pattern, which can sound pretty sweet. With that guitar i got a 10 watt Johnson (no name?) practice amp. 2 years after that i bought my Ovation CC24 acoustic electric, sweet guitar, great tone, but no sustain at all, lol. 6 months after that i bought my Behringer Acoustasonic 120 watt 2-10" amp. Awesome amp, pisses my neighbors off all the time. Since then i haven't purchased any more instruments, because all my money has been invested in my other passion, filmmaking. I have recently started getting back into playing though, and Im looking into getting a drum set soon.

Dylan

Surell 09-08-2008 09:48 PM

I got an electric guitar (Fender Squier) and a 7 piece drum set (Ludwig). I don't know how to play either yet, but I plan on getting lessons for the guitar, then the drums. Then I wanna get a turntable set up and crank out the beats.

Axizol 09-11-2008 10:50 AM

I voted for piano, because it's the one up there. I'm mostly on the clarinet, though. I forget which type I have, but I've been on clarinet for... about 8 years now. 's amazing. ^^

Bulldog 09-24-2008 03:16 PM

I voted saxophone as I took lessons on the alto 'til I broke it. I took up the mandolin in it's place about 6 months ago, of which I broke one of the strings (and it ain't gonna be fun replacing it!)

Astronomer 11-02-2008 10:01 PM

I make my music with:

- A Weinbach upright piano, bought by my parents for my musical learnings when I was about 8 years old. The piano is now about 20 years old and it is the nicest sounding piano I have ever played in my life.

- A Casio CDP-100 full-sized electric piano with weighted keys, damper pedals, and limited effects. $800 and the best thing I've ever invested in.

- A Yamaha acoustic guitar which is bruised and battered from all its musical adventures but good enough for my guitaring needs.

- A Fender Stratocaster which I saved up for when I was about 16 or so. It kinda sucks but I love it! I use a Zoom effects pedal with it and a really crappy little 15 watt amp.

How did that Mexican Strat play? Im curious because I have played a Mexican Original Series Telecaster and compared to the 500 dollar more American made it played practically as well.

i've only really tried one made in the USA strat. while i'd say it was comparable, it's not quite the same. then again mine is 13 years old and my friends is only 2-3. the american felt a little tighter and heavier. although the tightness might be a result of his maple fretboard where all of my guitars have rosewood or ebony boards.

with the extra money necessary to buy an american strat i'd just pick up a mexican and use the extra money to upgrade the pickups and get a pedal or two. then again i haven't really tried other mexicans besides mine, so the new ones might not be of the same quality.

kaleidoscope.. 11-23-2008 08:13 PM

Ok, so ive been a guitarist for the past 7 or 8 years...

Gear I've got...

I play a Ibanez SZ 320 mahoganny which i quite like. It does the job..Ive played better guitars but this suits me fine. Its a semi pro range guitar and sounds sweet!

I play that through a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier 100 watt and a Marshall Cab...sound is huge!

Effects : in order...

Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner..>G2D Classic overdrive..>Modified Boss EQ-7..>Electro Harmonics Memory Man with Hazarai.

I usually use my amps clean channel as dirty it up with my G2D overdrive pedal and get some nice sounding overdrive..not needing to much gain for most of what i do..sounds nice and smooth...

I would recommend an EQ pedal to everybody!they are really great if you can get a good one... Mine was crap until i moded it..

Ive also got a Maton EM 225...so beautiful. And sounds amazing through a PA..

I would love to get a tele.

I'm thinking of getting a Ibanez TubeScreamer TS808 though...anyone got one?what do you think of it?

anticipation 11-24-2008 02:47 PM

i make sounds with a '96 Danelectro guitar with lipstick pickups. i use a fender sidekick reverb.

and they say "real guitarists" never stick with their first guitar, fuck that.

littleknowitall 01-17-2009 03:47 PM

Right now, (Bassist by the way) Just a simple Fender Jazz Standard and Trace Elliot combo rig. It's sufficient enough to gig with, evidentally I'd be looking to gig in an ampeg and a couple of different Jazz basses if I had the money, But at the moment I don't. :/

:p:

seriously though, good luck. maybe try taking advantage of the nervous energy rather than overcoming it, see it for what it is and just run with it. it's normal to be nervous, get used to seeing the world while you're on edge, find out what you're capable of doing when you're senses are in overdrive. you might surprise yourself and find that it helps you more than you considered possible.

when you're facing the crowd focus on something in the back of the room like the fire exit sign or something. it gives the impression you're looking at the people without having to make specific eye contact.

most importantly. breathe. it seems incredibly basic but controlling your breath will improve your performance and presence. focus on taking full deep breaths before you get out on stage, it'll calm you down and make you appear to be more relaxed (and it might actually relax you too hehe)

mannny 01-20-2009 06:27 PM

Thanks for the tips. I tend to really stress myself out in these situations. Like have you ever had your knees shake or your hands quiver? This can be a problem when playing the piano as you can imagine. This rarely happens to me but it has before. I just hope I can be relaxed since this will probably be one of the largest audiences I've ever played for.

mr dave 01-21-2009 02:44 AM

to be totally honest i've never been nervous before playing music for a crowd but i've also never been in a situation like yours. it runs counter to my personal views on performance (more power to you for doing it though)

a friend of mine was in the drama club in high school and they were all about breathing exercises and light meditation prior to performances. i'm left to assume those relaxation exercises can be applied to other types of performances as well.

either way good luck and let us know how it goes.

i am currently playing a PRS SE EG through a Line 6 Spider 2 amp. I am currently saving up for a Fender Deluxe. Then my effects goes as follows: Crybaby Wah, MXR Distortion +, Big Muff, Boss OC3, Digitech Digital Delay, and then a Digitech RP 300, it's not the best thing - but it has some decent delay on it.

jaguar ride 01-29-2009 04:38 PM

Drummer in the house. i've been playing for about 6 years. i've got a 5-piece Pearl export, with pretty much the standard cymbal arrangement... 20" ride, 14" hats, and two 14" crashes (all zildjians btw).

I'm fairly good at the styles i play, however i havent really ventured outside of the realm of rock at this point. i'd like to be able to play jazz and other genres well. i also enjoy experimenting with unusual time signatures (i.e. 5/4, 7/4, 7/8, 11/8, etc). i'm not that great at it though lol:o:

No actually, but i have been getting into alot of prog rock quite a bit lately... Can, King Crimson, Gong, Pink Floyd, etc. i've always admired their ability to rock out in funky time signatures.

i love my acoustic i named her suzy and shes just fun to play shes and alveraz btw also my grand ma owns the best guitar ever its a martin from like the 1920-30's that her aunt and uncle got her so she could do something while she was in bed with polio now people have offered her any amount of money she names as well as any guitar she wants but she wont do it cause she already promised it to my aunt but i would do anything short of murder and theft to get that guitar

playin a schecter c-1 hellraiser w/ emg active 89-81. also have an epiphone sg special. right now i play through an epiphone 50 watt so.cal tube half stack but i'd like to have a mesa boogie triple rectifier and a line 6 spider 3 150 half stack.my own personal faves. with the amp i have now, i run a digitech death metal pedal. i couldn't live w/ the natural distortion of this amp.

I got a 2002 Ibanez JEM 7V recently from a friend of mine. Too bad I hate Ibanez although I'm still happy I didn't pay for the guitar so no matter how much I sell it for I'm still making a profit. My main guitar now is a Parker PM-10. Everything is top notch on this guitar and you won't find the same quality on guitars twice the price of it.

Most mediocre guitars I've ever played. I mean this Jem is worth just over €2000 and it plays like an RG350. And it's made in Korea. Once again I'm glad I didn't pay for it because for that price I'd expect it to be made in Japan at least. And another thing I don't like about Ibanez is that they charge ridiculous amounts of money for the high end signatures that the endorsed artists don't even play. They play guitars built for them in an exclusive L.A.-based custom shop. People work hard and save sometimes for years to buy those guitars and it's not even the one their hero plays? That isn't really fair.

GuitarBizarre 02-19-2009 07:32 PM

Jems aren't made in Korea, they're made in Japan, in Fujigen. Only the lower end Jem555 and Jem Jr. were ever made anywhere else.

If yours is made in Korea, its a fake. The serial number should start with F then 2 digits denoting year of manufacture, then the digits will notate the production number for that year. If its a real Ibanez neck bolted onto a Jem body, with a decal supplied perhaps (Lots of people make Ibby project guitars, and ibanez decals are widely available), then the Korean necks subscribe to the same numbering scheme but the letter will be C, for 'Cort', the factory that ghostbuilds all korean Ibanez models. (Until recently, as due to Cort shutting shop, production has been moved to Indonesia. I don't know the prefix letter for the indonesian factory.)

Also, the LA custom shop was for years open to the public, however Ibanez closed it for the public due to waning demand. The outline of the shop itself consisted of numerous custom graphic finishes, and also a selection of RG pickup configurations for those people who wanted non-standard layouts such as H-S, without buying an RG565 sicne they may have wanted alternative finishes.

It runs today as a shop dedicated to "endorser" models, which is different to signature models. An endorsee artist is recognized as PLAYING the guitars of Ibanez, but not having a signature model. The artist can request custom modifications to an existing stock guitar and they will then be performed at the LA custom shop. An example is Dave Navarro's PRS tremolo equipped RG, or the original version of the 27 fret Xiphos. However these guitars will never be marketed as signature models as say, the Jem or the JS are. They are SINGULAR, NON-production guitars constructed as prototypes for very specific players. in nearly all instances of actual signature models however, no modifications are made or needed, therefore the artists guitars themselves come directly from the Fujigen plant.

In actual fact, Its well documented that apart from crazy modifications done to some guitars like FLO and PIA, all of Steve Vai's onstage Jems are built in the Fujigen plant. Even EVO was a stock Jem7VWH, and to all inents and purposes, still is. Vai has stated numerous times in interviews this fact. Not to mention, a major design reason according to Vai himself, for the bolt on necks, is so that if one broke, Ibanez could just send him a production neck and it will return the guitar to its original specs with no costly custom machining.

Also, with the closure of the Cort factory, and the introduction of the S5470 and SV5470, anything Ibanez make with 'Prestige' branding, is Japanese made now, unless its old stock S prestige models of numbers 2170 and below (Or old stock of the 7 string S model, which was also korean).

Regardless, the Korean Ibanez guitars are by and large of great quality, hell, I own an S2170. My only gripe was the stock pickups, but Ibanez have now revamped their prestige lines for 2009 and are supplying Dimarzio combos in many of them. Also, the original ZR tremolo system had an arm holder flaw, which has since been addressed with the introduction of the ZR2.

I'd say you need to check on what you actually have there, and do some research. Jems are fine guitars and I've played more than a few that have all been of consistently high quality. My favourite being a sparkle blue 2002 model. In fact, the last major QC issue brought up in relation to them was to my knowledge corrected some time ago by tightening up the tolerances on the routing for the vine inlay so that less/no gaps needed to be filled around the inlay itself.

Yeah. I know more about Ibanez and guitars in general than anyone reasonably should. Suffice to say, I think if you've managed to find a jem that plays like an RG350, you've not found a jem. For one thing the neck profiles are completely different and so is the fretwire. Not to mention a 350 would have a nut volute, whereas an 02 Jem wouldn't. Does yours have an ebony or Rosewood board, and can you confirm the serial number for me? If its an early 02 production number, its much more likely o have an Ebony board than rosewood. Later in 2002 however production switched to rosewood in preparation for the 2003 model changes which included a switch to the Edge Pro bridge without locking posts, and I believe the aforementioned tightening of routing tolerances was done around the same time.

UPDATE: After some discussion and Sodacake giving me the serial, number, it was established that unfortuantely his guitar is NOT a Jem7VWH in this post
