lol that paint job is pretty cool. What kind of bass is it? Can't tell from the pic.

I have been trying to figure out for a long time now. On the headstock it shows this funny looking V alone if you can figure out what It may be.

If its a bolt on neck look inside the pocket. If there is a serial or somehting enter it online and you may find the answer.

Fender Tele Thinline 69 Reissue (Mahogany) through Rocktron Wah, Boss DS-1, Big Muff Pie, and finally into a Fender solid state 2x12. (For solid state it actually can sound pretty damn wonderful, the spring rev is easily the best part.

I got my fender squier p-bass. Black, with a red pick guard, looks really cool with the steel strings. 600 dollar bass I got for 250, I love that bass (my first bass), but I want to get a fender jazz bass this year.

musakjunkie 06-08-2011 01:29 PM

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years... i currently play a 2008 American Fender Strat, and a 1960 Les Paul Classic, out of a Mesa Triple Rec... for pedals, I use a Boss Delay DD7, a Boss Temolo, and a Dime Cry Baby for pedals ~

Drums. Pretty standard kit, considering it was a present and I really don't know much of anything about drum gear/companies/what is the best. I have a Pearl kit, standard three toms. Double bass pedal. Zildjian hi hat and crash... and half a a hi hat that I'm using a makeshift crash. Actually don't sound too shabby, just doesn't sound like a crash... I'll get another real crash eventually, but I like this little setup too much to get rid of my half hi hat. Also, a nice Pearl ride.

And my snare is some fancy nice brand that I can't remember right now... will edit post later when I bother to go look at it. The kit is in the garage.

Anywho. I don't know a whole lot about my instruments, but dang do I love playing them. Or any percussion instrument, really. I just love the feeling of drumming in general. I can play it calmly and jazzy, or let loose some pent up stress with an insane blast beat. And playing it always gives me a hyper, happy feeling.

Anyway, anyone have suggestions for fantastic crash cymbals? My kit's my baby, and I love it dearly, but I could use a better crash.

Paiste is pretty much the cult fave for most people I come across. I personally only like their rides and light crashes, and it depends on the particular cymbal. Best idea is to go down to the local shop and test some out. Try out the Paiste and Zildjians. Stay away from the Sabians, especially the B8 pros, unless you like really bright, ringy cymbals that have no wash whatsoever. They're cheaper than Paiste and Zildjian, but they'll annoy you to death. Sabian splashes are ok, though. They decay quickly enough so that it isn't an issue.

Also, no kit is complete without a nasty china. Wuhan's a cult classic that's extremely cheap. Go for the smaller ones, as the larger are... how can I put this... overly obnoxious. I forget the sizes, but try out the next to smallest.

richie1 06-29-2011 05:54 PM

Hey eveyone! This is my first post on the instrument thread. I play guitar (been playing for 30+ years), bass and some piano. I've been playing for a long time, but my style is more in Keith Richards/Johnny Thunders vein. Not "fast" or lead oriented but more rhythm focused.

My main guitar is a 1978 Yamaha SG2000. I LOVE this guitar! Beyond that, I have some cheapo, but cool, others. Dan Electro 3022 (bronze, dual pickup) from the mid to late 60's, a Harmony Rocket from early 70's, and some other less important cheapo stuff. I've also got an Epiphone Arch top from the 40's, a Sigma Martin acoustic and a Kentucky mandolin. All are really fun/cool instruments IMHO.

I used to play alot (in bands and stuff) but play alot less since having kids, etc.... I reallly need to play more even if it's just for/by myself. Anyway, that's my guitar collection. Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice! I have heard Paiste several times, so I suppose that's definitely the place to start. But I'll be checking out all these, thanks. :)

The only advice I can't take is going down to my local shop... the music stores round these parts always have awful, awful, awful drum equipment. I don't think I have found more than a handful of cymbals that I enjoy at any of my local music shops.

Well I'm at work right now, so I'll upload pics later, but my equipment is as follows:

1. Acoustic Yamaha packed full of band decals.
2. Epiphone Blue Burst SG with 40w Fender Frontman (BOSS Metal Pedal)
3. '61 Gibson Hummingbird (passed down from my father)

The latter is my pride and joy, Only I can't play Pride and Joy yet!, lol

Syrith 09-19-2011 12:14 AM

I bought a really ****ty Great Divide acoustic like a week ago. I hope it's not too late for me to begin the training.

DomBerardi 10-03-2011 12:29 PM

I own quite a few guitars. I have an American Fender Strat, Amercian Fender Tele, Gibson Les Paul Standard. I also own a Jumbo Boucher Acoustic guitar which sounds incredible.
For amps i have a Fender Deluxe 112, HiWatt Custom 100 and the latest amp i got is an Vox AC15 which is my main amp for most of my gigs. I find that the Vox sounds great on most of the gigs i play, from Rock to Pop to Blues.
Can't go wrong with the Vox!

Unicr0n 10-04-2011 03:38 AM

Stringed instruments: Ibanez 4-string bass. Ancient thing, like ten years old. Crappy, no-name six-string electric guitar that my roommate gave me a couple years ago.

Keyboards: I've got a couple old Casios laying around that I picked up at thrift stores. I mostly use them for circuit-bending purposes (nothing permanent, I love them in their original forms too much to commit solder to circuit board).

Misc/weird stuff: I've got a Sleepdrone5 synth box, a Trogotronic model 666 synth, a circuit bent drum machine with an atari controller for pitch bends and such, a couple different tape recorders for tape loops, a reel-to-reel for more ridiculous tape loops, a 1970's JC Penny record player for playing scratched-to-**** discount records, and a 1960's Pioneer 250 stereo power amp for running a lot of that miscellany through (it has a built in reverb function that sounds AWESOME). Also an old Behringer mixer for running all my different sound sources into.

Guitar pedals: A million. Some cheap, some not so cheap, some outright retardedly expensive. DOD distortions, Boss distortions and phasers, a couple different boutique pedals (OHNOHO Utter Stutter and BLOWING UP, Freakshow Effects Digilog Delay, if you're curious), and some other no-name brand crap.

I'm probably forgetting some stuff...uhm...a couple contact mics, an Atari Punk Box, some oneoff weird little electronic things...Speak and Spells...I dunno. I've got all kinds of crap clogging up my practice space.

MAte you should invest in a table. Craigslist would have some great cheap ones!

Farfisa 10-05-2011 09:49 PM

I'm just curious, why does everyone have an actual board for their pedals? I do just fine putting mine in two bags whenever I takes my gear somewhere.

PS. Also, what are those two big mystery boxes with the many knobbies I see there?

The green one is a Skychord Sleepdrone 5. Basically a 4-oscillator synth with an independent output for each channel, along with a fifth, 'mixed' output.

The silver one is a Trogotronic Model 666. Chaotic, nasty, overdriven synth madness.

Does it have a pickup in it? I've always wanted one to mess about with as it sounds amazing with delay (not distortion though, obviously)

No pickup, but a dynamic mic on a boom-stand is good enough. I'm not planning on running it through anything more than delay and reverb myself, and maybe some modulation.

sonar1 11-15-2011 08:22 PM

I play electric guitar.

Will post some pics once I qualify.

I have a Gretsch archtop hollowbody, a Fender Telecaster, and a Fender Stratocaster.

They all sound similiar (bright) through either of two small (tweed type) tube amps I use for all styles from jazz to soul, and blues.

EDIT: OK, I hit the magic number 15 posts tonight, so let's try:

There ya go. More to follow in other posts.

lucifer_sam 11-20-2011 03:13 PM

I am seriously salivating just looking at that Gretsch. It may not be a Falcon but I can still hear the honey tones oozing out of it. Low end tone is easy to replicate on a guitar, but amplifying those bright frequencies at suitable volumes requires more consideration in design and manufacturing. You better not be using that thing with anything less than tube amplification, especially if you're fond of distortion.

As soon as my bankroll hits $3600 a black or white Falcon will be the first thing I buy.

Couple of tweed Victorias (5112 & 20112), and was using Mesa/Boogie DC-3 and Mark-IV combos for big sounds, but sold those recently as they're just too heavy for my back.

It is a Fender G.E. Smith signature Telecaster. He specs those fretboard position markers, based on an old Fender Lap Steel.

Otherwise it's a lot like a thin-skin finish '52 RI with a big Nocaster-like neck.

It should work just fine until you can step up and get a drum amp. The Bass amp is made for lows and the horn should handle the cymbals nicely.....

Odyshape 11-23-2011 06:04 PM

I spent a long time being sad over not getting an 1960s ampeg tube amp I was trying to buy off a guy and ended up getting out bidded. Im not too sad though I ended up getting a nice bugera tube amp and discovered the wonderful mesmerizing sound of tube harmonics. I always thought tube amp people were snobs until I discovered this wonderful sound.

lucifer_sam 11-23-2011 09:34 PM

There are some seriously significant reasons for preferring tubes to solid state amps or tube-modeling amps. Longevity is just one of them; I plan on using my AC30 in decades to come. The circuit design for the Top Boost channel is itself over 50 years old.

I only just learned about the mathematics behind bias & tube amplification and it's WONDERFUL. I'd explicate it here but I'm almost positive not too many people on this forum are as interested or intrigued by the beauty in math. Or at least an analytical proof for why tubes will ALWAYS sound different/better than solid states.
