I am buying a Barrington soprano saxophone, which is Chinese made and really cheap. I have been playing a Vito tenor saxophone for the past 9 years, with a C* classical mouthpiece. Its a fun setup.

I have a question for any guitar experimentors or scholars out there..have you ever heard of using all humbucker type coils on a strat as opposed to the single?? Or can you even do that?

Howard the Duck 02-05-2011 08:03 AM

i mix humbuckers with single coil - i have an Ibanez RG-7

i used to have two single-coils but it sounds too squealy and I hate that microphoney hum/feedback

i use a British Metal Master distortion pedal with the bass all the way up through a cheap china-made Epiphone amp with full overdrive and it sounds a bit like a Big Muff

I also have a DOD wah-wah, not exactly a Dunlop but its shorter range makes it easier for me to make regular wahs to the beat for those 70s sounding funk

i also use a slide i cut from a clothes-hanging stand (it's an aluminium tube)

I use a coral reef pick i fashioned myself - it just sounds very harsh on the attack

so you have the standard humbucker along with 2 single coils?...nice innovation with the slide by the way

Does that pretty much cut out all the interference that contributes to the buzzing you tend to get out of the single coils?

Howard the Duck 02-05-2011 09:06 AM

yeah, and I still get the bluesy tone I like by just using the single coil

and all three in unison gives a great metallic tone

and the first humbucker is very funky

which is great since I play multiple genres

I was wanting to get a Fender Strat SRV edition....they are insanely over priced though god.

Howard the Duck 02-22-2011 11:09 PM

just got a freakin bonus so my first bass won't be a Gypsy Rose after all - it'll either be a Mexican Fender P or Jazz or a Squier Jazz

one of my clients has a sister working in Yamaha, who can get products at staff price (20% off)

any suggestions for a Yamaha bass?

Stress-Pass 02-24-2011 05:07 AM

I'm a guitarist and I've built up quite a collection of gear.

Guitars:
ESP LTD EX-260 (Main)
Gibson Les Paul Custom (Secondary)
AXL Jacknife (Backup if all else fails)
Montana (Acoustic... Not sure on model number)

Amps:
Line 6 Spider III HD75 & Spider Cab
Line 6 Spider III 75W combo

A couple of years ago I got a cheap Les Paul replica and I've since done some custom modifications to it.

*Replaced stock pickups with EMG-HZ (best choice ever)
*Re-painted the entire body to a Black/Silverburst
*Replaced all knobs with custom dice knobs

Still a bit of work to do to it but when I finish it up it will become one of my most used.

Thats a nice ESP but your Gibby Custom isnt your main?? Those customs are BEAUTIFUL! They play like butter, sound like heaven, and can be used for litterly an type of music.

Yeah, it might be the amp I'm using but I've been unsuccessful in finding the tone I like with my Gibby. Still a damn beautiful guitar to play, but with me it's all about tone. My ESP far exceeds it with Line 6 amps.

Ah i forgot about that no wonder. Get to a guitar store PRONTO plug into the nearest tube amp around and I bet you your opinion changes. Theres nothing like a Les Paul running through even a semi cranked tube amp.

ThePhanastasio 02-24-2011 08:03 AM

If anyone can get their hands on one, I highly suggest a Fender Deluxe VM tube amp. They're about $800 new, but I played through one recently, and it's probably my favorite amp I've ever played through. It's got sweet built in effects, a 12" speaker, and the chorus effect is an absolute joy to mess with for different sounds.

They do have a lot of power, though, (40W is a little much for a practice amp) so you may not want to mess with one if you've got a small apartment or something.

Still, phenomenal amp.

Agreed. Those babies sound great. I am always amazed the dirty and even high gain sounds I can get out of them with just a pedal or two thrown on the overdrive channel. Fender ftw.

[Royal Tenenbaum] 02-24-2011 01:56 PM

The VM is definitely a good amp. I've always liked it.

My main set-up is as follows:

Gretsch G5120 w/ 11-50 flatwounds >>> MXR Dyna Comp >>> ProCo Rat >>> '59 Fender Bassman LTD.

Picture of my amp/pedals:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1725/dsc01825u.jpg

Yeah, I keep my pedals on top of my amp, because I never really turn them off when I'm playing, thus it saves me the trouble of using two ridiculously long cables to connect my guitar to the pedals, and my pedals to the amp. Instead, I just have my long cable running into the Dyna Comp, some nondescript 6' cable running from the Dyna Comp to the Rat, and a regular patch cable from the Rat to the amp's input.

that's right

My friend has a Rosewood SRV, you know it's the ones before they made the fret board from Pao ferro wood. Mostly likely it's a collectors item now. The SVR passed the price of an E.C. & Jeff Beck's Strat, I thought they were the same price a few years ago. Even the Road Worn Strats are pricey for what they are, so that squashes the idea for me of modifying one into a SVR-style Strat.

chanpyn 02-27-2011 09:03 AM

I have two Gibson SGs, One worn wood finish and one with a Pewter finish.
Also running these two through a Fender Deville Amp. X3 Live floorboard for effects.

Hey... I have a Line 6 head. It's perfectly capable of collecting dust just as well as anything else.

The tube ones dont sound bad. I have just found the solid states to be dry and lacking.

Oh no, I don't disagree at all.
The only time I ever used that damn thing was with a Peavy Valveking half stack at live gigs where the acoustics were so bad it was literally impossible to gauge the quality of my Line-6 head.

yeah, the guy from the Spin Doctors had a custom 3 humbucker strat back in the early 90s pretty sure he mentioned needing to do a little routing to make them all fit though. i hate myself for remembering that band now. apologies to older members reading this.

i'm sorry but this is just sad. you either have an ESP EX guitar or you have an LTD EX-### (numbers indicating overall quality) from the ESP site it's either a 50, 360 or 401. anything under 400 is made in Indonesia and anything above 400 is made in Korea all LTDs are made with lower grade materials and hardware as compared to their ESPs counterparts(made in Japan).

with an LTD under 400 you're basically putting the equivalent of a really nice beginner guitar over a freaking Gibson and a custom one at that... :bonkhead:

or are you calling an Epiphone a Gibson because they're both sold as 'Les Pauls'?

duga 03-14-2011 09:24 AM

My buddy just loaded some new blue/silver/red Lace Sensors into my Mexi Strat. He also completely shielded the inside and star grounded the thing...even on my ****ty practice amp this thing sounds 10x better. I did not expect such a difference, but these things rock the ****. I consider the sound to be halfway between a humbucker and a single coil. The blue neck pickup has the sexiest clean sound I have ever heard. Oh yeah, and zero hum. That was the biggest damn annoyance I've had with strats and single coils in general. My worries are over!

Not to mention my guitar looks damn sexy with black pickups.

Lace sensors are wonderful. They have definitely rescued many old strats from disease.

Does anyone else play piano or keyboards of any sort? I've been moving further and further away from guitar for a while and back to my first and favorite instrument to the point that I can't remember the last time I played my guitar. Seems like most everyone around here plays guitar, bass or drums though.

Howard the Duck 03-15-2011 12:54 AM

^^I play some keyboards, not terrifically good at it, I know where the notes are, and can form chords, mostly jazz chords

I transcribed 2 songs from guitar to keyboards - Stairway to Heaven and Every Breath You Take, but not the melody line, as I sing it

music0_uno1 03-29-2011 02:53 AM

Started out with an electric guitar les paul and never looked back. Dabbling in drums now though!

NGPercussion 04-26-2011 09:10 AM

I have:
Hohner Harmonica
antique Artley Clarinet
Pearl Steel shell snare drum with Sabian Quietone practice pad
assorted sticks and mallets (if you're really interested, I can put up a list)

EDIT: And somewhere, I have my original Recorder.

Farfisa 04-26-2011 09:55 PM

My 72' Telecaster Custom RI and the various pedals I have.
Devi Ever Disaster Fuzz
ProCo RAT2
EHX Big Muff
MXR EQ
Hardwire RV-7
Ibanez DE-7
EHX Pulsar
Dunlop Crybaby 535Q

Tis a Custom, not Deluxe. That doesn't make it any better or worse though as I've played and loved both. This just seems more practical to me. :)

Damn right, I traded in a wimpy overdrive pedal for this and damn, is it awesome. Low end fuzzes are fucking amazing.

Ah, my error I should have realized.

And yes Big Muff Pie rules. With single coils and a fender amp I can just use this pedal and get nearly any hard rock or doom sound i want. Although kee a wimpy overdrive. I like my DS-1 for more dynamics and palm muting. Then of coarse the tube overdrive pedal for your regular little distortion/overdrive and bluesy stuff. With three pedals you can cover litterly any song ever.

i use a British Metal Master distortion pedal with the lowest bass setting with an overdriven China-made Epiphone amp

it's a close approximation of the Big Muff

I'm a drummer - have been playing for about 7/8 years!

I have a SHINE kit (I've heard they've gone bankrupt now, which is a shame because they make brilliant kits) and Paiste Alpha cymbals.
