Trumpet or Trombone?
 

I'm really looking forward to playing my first instrument, I've narrowed it down to either the trumper or the trombone, but I'm not sure how different the sound is between the two.

Here's a clip of one of my favorite bands, Reel Big Fish. I want to know what instrument is because thats the sound I'm going for.

Uh well im inclined to say "well it depends one what you want" but that answer is as good a no answer. In my opinion; trumpet.

Trombone is fun, it seems cool, but the great players are relegated to the back of the obscurity bus becuase the instrument doesn't lend its self to much.

Trumpet can and will be featured in plenty of great bands, my pick, rock the trumpet.

Well, I want to be able to play solos in a band, and I want an instrument that can vary how high or low the sound is.

I really like the trumpet (if it is) in some Ska bands, but dislike it's high notes and find them a pain to listen too.

As for the trombone, I haven't really heard it in any of the bands I listen to. I'm guessing it plays in sync with the trumpet.

Also what do you mean by "doesn't lend it self to much"?

I hold both instruments in the same respect but I would recommend the Trumpet, though the trombone is essential to most bands, you can go a lot farther with the Trumpet. I know a great trumpet player who is amazing and yet there is still so much more he can learn. Plus, the trumpet is easier to incorporate in many types of bands and is a big thing in many Ska bands.

So, the trombone is essential to most bands (I'm assuming you mean Ska), but the trumpet isn't essential?

Is there any well known Ska band that you know of that just has one of the two?

Yeah, a trombonist is a important to a Ska band but the trumpet is great in any all around bands and is a great way to test you skill.

From what I have seen from many Ska bands, the most common types of horn sections are (the number of instruments isn't that important in the long run):

Saxophone and Trombone.
Less Than Jake
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Trumpet and Trombone:
Reel Big Fish
Forces of Evil (same thing but whatever)

Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone:
The Hippos
Bad Manners
Catch 22 (new)
Madness

Like I said, the Trombone is a big thing In most ska bands while it seems to be either sax or trumpet or both. I personally see the trumpet to be a great instrument all around in and type of music while the trombone is important in ska. Just my opinion in this. I hope you enjoy whatever instrument you pick, I play Alto Saxophone and love it. :D

To many guitarists these day IMO.

There are a lot....but most dont last longer than 3 months because they realize it takes practice

pssh, if thats the suggestion, get a piano. Listen man, Miles Davis is the quintessential trumpet player....who's his trombone counterpart.
