What about Bluegrass? A lot of folk and accoustic music dosen't have drumming.

If the voice sucks, it doesn't matter how awesome the rest of the band is.

There is no such thing as a bad voice as long as it suits the mood of the music.

^So what you're saying is that there IS such a thing as a bad voice, which is when that voice doesn't fit with the mood of the music?

I think maybe the most important instrument in the band is whichever one is being played by the person who kicks everybody else's asses and tells them when what they're playing is crappy music.

That sounds like fascism to me.

I think many of the best bands are the ones where the ideas of every member contributes to the overall music, it becomes more of a community thing.

In short, I prefer bands over backing bands. And if I join a band, its not going to be a backing band. Why play just to satisfy the ego of some assh*le who think he's the next Bob Dylan? Why not do my own thing? A musician as an artist has the right to indulge himself, regardless of what instrument he plays.

Well ok, there are some exceptions, I wouldn't recommend letting the triangle player do a solo.

this is one of the concepts that makes the beatles such an outstanding band with great music. not one of them alone were really AMAZING musicians. they were all talented in their own rights, and they contributed that to something greater.

think about it, what music fan cant name at least 5 (if not 25) people that play better guitar than george and john, a better bass than paul, and better drums than ringo? honestly there are artist who were better song writers than both john and paul too.

the most important instrument i believe changes song to song... but i would say guitar and piano are the most versatile because they can stand alone, lead in a group, or just add to the group as a whole.

vocals might be argued too, but i think that music without vocals is better than vocals without music... so i cant really vote for it. ie id rather listen to explosions in the sky than some ones a capella.
