The piano has 88 keys is it harder to play than violin? no there about the same (i know i play both) Any instrument is easy if u play only the basics of it. ie. the guitar is "easy" if u only play power chords and bass is easy if u only play the tonic.
Dont get me wrong im not trying to make the bass hard to play im just trying to get some respect for bass playing and bassist in general. Comments like "bassist are failed guitarist really pissed me off and is COMPLEYE BS. If that were true any guitarist could pick up a bass and play it at a high lvl. And yes i admit basslines are usually simpiler in songs that guitar parts but the concepts in the intruments are different so its hard to compare. However you cant say MASTERING the bass is easy. Its not like Flea got as good as he did overnight. It takes hardwork to truely master the bass. Say that mastering the bass is easy to victor wootens face and hed probably slap u hes been practicing the bass since he was 5. Even if u are a genious it takes practice.
A virtuoso (cant spell) guitarist cant pick up a bass and play like a virtuoso bassist. Yes playing guitar does help with bass but that can also be reversed.
So for u guitarist who think the bass is soo "easy" plz pick one up and start playing lke jaco i mean if ur good at guitar ur porbably master of the bass.
SO PLZ GIVE BASSIT SOME DAM RESPECT!
Man, you're a real dumbass.

I said it was easy to play, not easy to master, BIG difference.

It depeneds on musical experience. When I learned guitar after already playing bass for a few years it was easier to learn than what it was for me to learn bass.

I feel like giving my two cents.

I've been playing the guitar longer than I've been playing a bass and I think the hardest for me to learn was the guitar. I dunno. Maybe I didn't like it as much as the bass or something but it seemed tot ake me for ever to learn how to play the guitar. But when I picked up a bass it was different. I guess I grasped the concept a little easier.

So i guess the level of difficulty or the ease with which we can master a bass ,or any instrument for that matter is also determeined a little by how we learn or what we can get a better feel for. or rather what we seem most geared towards.

But I can say that from my own experience of playing other instruments like Guitar, Keyboard and Banjo... Bass is difinetely the easiest.
I'm an 8 year guitarist and a 2 year bassist and i'll say this, you ask me, guitar was a piece of piss, learning to exceed on bass will be a great achievement in comparison...
There's so many completely different techniques on a bass you can't get with a guitar, if you really look into what wooten plays you can see that theres more to it than playing with your fingers and slapping around the frets when someone says play something impressive, if you look close enough there's a hell of a lot more to bass than most people take for granted.

I'm a 6 year guitarist, 1 year bassist, but even in that short amount of time I have found the bass to be quite easier.

Of course there are techniques on bass you can't do on guitar, but it's a completely different instrument, different instruments have their own unique ways of playing them, it should also be noted that there is a lot of things that can be done on guitar but not on bass.

There have been riffs that I've tried to play on guitar for years that I could learn on bass in a matter of days.

I don't know what the hell it is you are talking about, but I'm not saying bass is easy to master (because it isn't)... It's just easy to learn.

Everyone can play bass, very few can play it well, that's the motto.

I love his bass playing, and I think he added a great touch to Nirvana.

But in all objectivity, he's a very average bass player, nothing to write home about.
