etc.

enlighten me,

Laces Out Dan! 07-27-2006 12:49 PM

Well i dont know toooo much about the instrument...but Geddy Lee is my favourite bassist..hes soo killer.

swim 07-27-2006 12:52 PM

My favorite bass is a rickenbaker [sp] my favorite bassists are Cliff Burton, Paul d'Amour and Geoff Kresge.

Favourite Bassist? Me...

And also Martin (Decapitated) Cliff, Jaco

littleknowitall 07-27-2006 01:30 PM

Jaco is cool, i learnt 'the funky chicken' the other day or well...some of it.

boo boo 07-30-2006 02:08 AM

My bass is a Telluride, which is similar to a Squire... Anyway, my top ten bassists would be.

1.Flea
2.Tony Levin
3.John Entwhistle
4.Chris Squire
5.Bootsy Collins
6.Les Claypool
7.Paul Mccartney
8.Mike Watt
9.John Wetton
10.John Paul Jones

Laces Out Dan! 07-30-2006 06:50 PM

Im very disapointed to you dont have Geddy Lee on there....he blows the **** out of paul mccartney and john paul jones...

boo boo 08-03-2006 05:42 PM

It's preference, I realise that Geddy is better than all the bassists I listed on a technical level (except Levin), but I dunno, there are just several bassists that click with me better than Geddy does.

But if it makes you feel any better.

11. Geddy Lee

I really couldn't do a list of who I consider the most skilled bassists, way too tough to call, but I think that these guys are more skilled than Lee, at least.

Victor Wooten
Stu Hamm
Billy Sheenan
Jaco Pastorius
Michael Manring
Stanley Clark
Tony Levin
Dave LaRue
John Patitucci
Gary Willis

Though Levin aside, I prefer Lee over all of them.

Laces Out Dan! 08-03-2006 05:43 PM

I guess so..i just really love the sound he puts out..the bass has just as much of a lead part in rush as guitar

Raine 08-11-2006 11:16 PM

i have a red esquire.

one of my favorite bassists is flea. he once had blue hair

thebassistX 08-13-2006 09:27 PM

yea fleas cool pretty good groove ...hah but i think he slaps to much...

boo boo 08-16-2006 11:13 AM

He's a funk bassist, slapping is a main part of his technique, though thats not to say he can't do without, Californication has some great melodic bass playing with very little slapping.

hiu 08-16-2006 04:32 PM

Flea isn't very good at all, if we are talking about the top echelon of bass players.

Incorrect.

I've always loved Squire, then again, who doesn't?

Anyway, I had a bass, but I found it too boring and took up guitar, damn I want the bass back:(

Some Yes haters.

Though to say someones not a good bass player just because of the band they are in would make you really dumb.

andy 08-17-2006 02:15 PM

yup, Yes are a great band too, Relayer > TFTO

mosesandtherubberducky 08-17-2006 05:40 PM

I suck at bass, but it's fun :D

I like (for the sole purpose that most of these guys I can try to play some of their stuff and not get confused)
Flea
Mike Drint (Dookie album and earlier)
Matt Freeman

oh and did i add that i totally suck at playing bass? I look at it in more of a guitarist mindset :(

boo boo 08-17-2006 06:00 PM

Bassists are failed guitarists.

Seriously they are, I've been playing guitar for over 5 years, I never got that good, one day I just said, "to hell with this, I'm getting a bass".

andy 08-18-2006 08:04 AM

You're actually kind of right

Laces Out Dan! 08-18-2006 01:12 PM

i totally disagree with that.
Has anyone heard how Chris Squire learned how to play bass?
He used to experiment with LSD a lot..and i guess one day he had an absolutely horrible trip..it scared him soo badly that he didnt leave his girlfriend's apartment for a year..and thats where he picked up and learned bass. Thats what i heard at least.

Thats probably closer to the truth..i still dont agree with it

andy 08-18-2006 02:04 PM

Well it is true that it's easier to master bass than guitar

swim 08-18-2006 02:05 PM

If you're a shit guitarist but are a good at arranging music or just find pure enjoyment in doing so then your best bet is pick up some sticks or a bass. Most music isn't bass driven so you can just use basic theory and get by. I think a sick bassists has far more talent than a sick guitarist. Jazz bassists> 98% of guitarists.

I picked up a guitar after bass and I really think that helped me because I was use the frets being so far away. The "hard" chords aren't really hard to me and moving up and down the fret board is no problem at all. The strings are easier to play faster with as well. I've always prefered counter melody so I'll stick with my bass.

andy 08-18-2006 02:07 PM

That's laughable bull, 98% of guitarists, mate you mustn't have heard ****e, who would you consider the "defenition" of a virtuoso guitarist?

Yeah I'm talking about all different genres of guitar, take country guitar for example, feck sake it's difficult, take Chet Atkins and Adrian Legg, fingerpicking masters, playing alternating basslines while keeping a melody, that takes skill, then we move onto Blues, through to rock and Classical, overall the guitar is a more versatile instrument, not to go off subject

boo boo 08-18-2006 02:26 PM

Bass is easier for the simple reason that it requires no chords, it's always easier to just play one string at a time.

Alternate tunings also work better for bass than guitar.

Laces Out Dan! 08-18-2006 02:27 PM

Not when you have sick string skipping involved..Metal Guitarists have made it an art

Yes, and Chord study is one of the hardest things about the guitar anyway, at least I found it was

boo boo 08-18-2006 02:39 PM

One reason I took up bass is because I totally suck ass at playing chords.

andy 08-18-2006 03:34 PM

E 9
B 9
G 9
D 7
A 9
E 9

If you still have a guitar, try playing that

mosesandtherubberducky 08-18-2006 03:42 PM

^Minor 7th?

EDIT: nevermind I saw how it was fingered...fxck that's hard

andy 08-18-2006 04:03 PM

I use this fingering

E 9 (3)
B 9 (3)
G 9 (3)
D 7 (1)
A 9 (2)
E 9 (2)

boo boo 08-18-2006 04:45 PM

My brother has my guitar right now, last time I was at his house he took the strings off, he was in the process of changing strings but he broke the minor E string.

I'll eventually ask for it back once we get some new strings for it.

andy 08-19-2006 08:24 AM

...Boo boo, there is no such thing as the minor E string

boo boo 08-19-2006 05:25 PM

I know, it's the same key, but since there are two E strings on a guitar that's what I call the thin one.

andy 08-19-2006 05:39 PM

Haha, ah right

thebassistX 08-19-2006 08:08 PM

bass and guitar same...

so what if u cant play chords on bass? chords are the easist thing on the guitar anyway...mastering bass and guitar are about the same anything the guitar can do the bass can do (except chords) ..its just a lil harder cuz the strings are bigger and the frets are bigger.....
also the playing concepts of bass and guitar are different the guitar is meant to add to a piece and make the song sound better where as the bass is meant to be a support and ground for the band......j
just cuz u can pull of crzy riffs on guitar dont mean u can come up wit a good groove on the bass
