Stagg L300 LP Style OR Epiphone Les Paul Special II (single, amps)

I need to know what ones better...i want to get Stagg as it looks nicer BUT the Epiphone is trusted as its Gibsons little brother...Can anyone give me any pros and cons?

neither are particularly great, but go for the epiphone if you MUST have one of the two.

Although personally, I'd reccomend something strat shaped, because single cutaway guitars are annoyingly difficult to play past the 14th fret. Don't believe the hype about squier stratocasters. A friend of mine's little brother owns one and I like to mess around on it whenever I'm round. Its a fine little guitar and the fact he bought it new means its thankfully free from any of the annoying issues that starter guitars tend to develop.


In fact, thats a good point. For a starter guitar, unless you have someone very experienced with you (Or if the seller allows you to take a whole MESS of high resolution photographs of it, to post here and get me or Mr Dave's opinion)

Then do NOT buy second hand. Theres a lot of stuff you can get caught out on, and as I mentioned, because they're cheap, starter guitars get abused to a stupid degree by players who just don't care. There are diamonds in the rough, but its not a sure thing. (Note: If you do end up taking pics, basically take a pic of everything with a screw on it or in it. Also take a picture of anywhere there is a wood join. Ie the heel of the neck on all sides, back of the nut, etc.)

i actually kind of disagree with the negativity towards 2nd hand instruments. it really depends on who you're buying from.

if you're getting it from some sketchy pawn shop that has more pipes and knives than guitars and amps you're going to get screwed. on the other hand if they've got a fully stocked room and staff who are eager to help you take your first steps into playing music then you should be fine. (there are plenty of sketch pawn shops in my town but there's one that IS legit)

if it's a private sale then find out why they're getting rid of the instrument. NEVER believe the default claim of 'i hardly ever used it'. just because it doesn't look worn down doesn't mean it's been taken care of. if they're just getting rid of the guitar because they tried and didn't like it you're greatly increasing your chances of getting a piece of crap. on the other hand if they upgraded to a new guitar and just need a little extra cash then you 'should' be safe.

very true as well. it's a buyer's market after all, you get what you pay for and if you don't educate yourself first... well, the only person you can really blame is yourself.

NEITHER!! = go for the Vintage LP style guitar! Similar price, and way better quality, value and sound.

Thats a very good point actually. A friend of mine had a Vintage SG copy and it actually wasn't a bad guitar at all.
