I want to play some classic guitar before going to electric bass. at least to know what I'm doing.

Never felt that bass was underrated, it seemed obvious that it's a stunning instrument.

simplephysics 09-23-2009 02:00 PM

I'd love to learn how to play the ukulele.. I've heard it's a pretty easy instrument to manage, and has produced some of the most heavenly tunes on the planet.

Arya Stark 09-23-2009 02:07 PM

^ Mm. Not to mention it doesn't take up too much space. xD

Right you are, and my little hands might actually be able to reach all the strings comfortably.

Aww. ^_^ You should learn.

And then write a song about how wonderful I am.

if i could i would just beat the **** out of drums all day long. they're like the purest form of music just because of the way they match up with the heartbeat.

in reality, it would seem i was born to play guitar. despite not knowing the names of any chords and having no formal or informal training whatsoever i've had no trouble playing music that satisfies my ears.

Buy Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele | Ukuleles | Musician's Friend

For me it was fairly easy to go from guitar to the ukulele, but I don't know if you need calluses to play it without your finger tips going through torture. Some of the chords in the standard tuning only require one finger so, yeah you can pretty much come up with something that is actually pleasing to the ears within the first 5 minutes of picking it up.

zeppelinchild 09-28-2009 05:48 PM

Guitar rocks

tgpo 09-28-2009 05:48 PM

I play bass. I attempted to play guitar prior to the bass, but the concept of chords overloaded my mind.

lieasleep 09-28-2009 06:02 PM

i play guitar, ukulele, mandolin, bass, singing saw, harmonica and a little git of the keys and violin. i love learning new instruments, love music.

Arya Stark 09-28-2009 06:07 PM

Singing saw?

Very nice! Self taught, or are there teachers for that?

all self taught, bought a cello bow some rosin and a hand saw from lowes, real fun, great sound, great instrument to get into to, all you need is some patience and a a decent ear for pitch

+81 09-30-2009 01:01 PM

I bought a stylophone the other day. I'm working on Silent Night. I've already mastered New Noise by Refused, haha.

BlitzySixx 10-05-2009 09:46 AM

I play guitar (acoustic), drums, and bass. I'm known as the musician of the family. ;)
:band:

TheCunningStunt 10-06-2009 06:16 PM

I play guitar and I love it as well.

Kole 10-07-2009 11:19 AM

I play a guitar, which has always been my dream instrument. Besides guitar, I always wanted to play sax.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 01:26 PM

Sax is a wonderful instrument.

Farfisa 10-07-2009 02:35 PM

My grandfather plays alto sax, I'm more partial to the sound of a trombone though.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 04:08 PM

I've only heard the trombone played well a couple of times, it's a difficult instrument to play.

I play Tenor Sax. I haven't played in a few months and I miss it like crazy, so I'm thinking of buying myself one.

theimperialwarcult 10-07-2009 05:17 PM

I play keyboard and percussion mostly. I'm pretty weak at classical guitar. and I would love to play the upright bass. Percussion has always been my favorite though. There are so many different instruments that fall under the category and they're all fun. I'm learning trumpet too.

I love marimba. I played percussion in band when I was in high school so I ended up playing a lot of marimba. Never did get good enough to play with 4 or 6 mallets though (well, I can only play chords with more than 2 mallets).

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 05:26 PM

Ahh, I play Marimba.

Four mallets is a beautiful thing.

That's awesome. Too bad that instrument sucks to transport from place to place and goes out of tune with temperature changes. But the sound is so warm ind rich.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 06:18 PM

A marimba? Out of tune? I don't know what you're talking about.

The sound is beautiful, though.

And we transported it by truck.

NumberNineDream 10-07-2009 06:51 PM

I never heard of a out of tune Marimba either. Anyway, it's just a great instrument. Pretty easy if we already play the piano [as it works on the same basis, graphically].

I was in a concert for a German experimental percussionist. He was alone on stage with more than 25 instruments around him. I remember the mix between Marimba and Tympani was incredible.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 06:53 PM

It's easy to know the music, but not the technique. Same the other way around.

Marimba + Timpani is ALSO a beautiful thing.

They sound sharp when the weather is too hot and flat when the weather is too cold. Because the sound is produced by moving air through the resonators. The speed at which this air is moved is the speed of sound, which varies with temperature (v = 331m/s + 0.6m/s/C * T)...didn't mean to get really technical but when playing outside in the winter time (freezing cold!) they had us put little heaters under the marimbas for this very reason.

NumberNineDream 10-07-2009 07:29 PM

^we did study that thing, I didn't imagine it would get that cold.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 07:51 PM

Oh. So it's not the Marimba itself.

Since I was in an ensemble, we'd all be in tune and out of tune together. xD

I guess it's not that big of a deal. They're just super anal (in marching band) about the quality of sound. We had to tune drums constantly too. We went really in depth about the properties of sound waves in one of my physics classes, which I think is really interesting. Anyways, my bad, I always seem to bring up the really nerdy stuff :o:

NumberNineDream 10-07-2009 08:17 PM

I am majoring in the nerdy stuff lol, incredibly interesting. But yeah drums are the worst to tune.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 08:30 PM

The Timpani are pretty difficult.

Ya, there's not too much you can do about it. Some marimbas are manufactured with tunable resonators so you can move the plugs up and down but even then it's not as simple as tuning a guitar.

Me too, I even read the journal of measurement and control
You'd think with all the money they put into band they would buy one of those fancy electronic drum tuners that measure the lug tensions. But I guess it's really good ear training to tune them yourself.

yeah that's always what they say, I guess it is good ear training. But sometimes they say that thing, and it seems so absurd. [last time we had to measure the light for our photo, tho with a click of a button we could've finished 30 minutes earlier -_-].

Or with digital age we're just getting lazy :D

lol, right? 'Cause lets face it, nobody has that good of an ear. Our senses are very limited compared to the high precision of specialized instrumentation out there.

Arya Stark 10-07-2009 09:48 PM

Nothing is as simple as tuning a guitar. xD

Alright then, try tuning a 12 string by ear and then say that.

lieasleep 10-08-2009 07:08 PM

way easy, tuning a twelve string is just as easy as a regular guitar, just more annoying and time consuming

Farfisa 10-08-2009 07:13 PM

When she said "simple" I thought "easy", my fault.
