Radiohead i shant even begin to debate on, because i will be here all night.
I really dont think Nirvana are overrated at all, Nevermind, like it or not, is an important album because it took grunge from the underground into mainstream consciousness, it heralded a new era if you will. Bleach and In Utero are both quality albums too, whilst Incesticide is a good collection. For such a short recording lifespan compared to other bands, they made such an impact. |

Kurt Cobain was immortalized for his suicide, not his music. Nirvana as a whole were a fairly mediocre band that simply brought their music to the mainstream. The generation of idiots who idolize Cobain and his self-venerating songwriting don't sway the fact that Nirvana never brought anything new to the table. They just popularized it.
I don't hate Nirvana. I just don't see sufficient reason to justify adoration of a hopelessly misled pop musician.

I don't think Nirvana are overrated... if anything, history has played down their significance by writing off Kurt Cobain as a psycho, manic depressive druggie and pointing to the fact that Dave Grohl has gone on to bigger and better things in his solo career.
If you ask most kids these days who "Nirvana" are or who Kurt Cobain is you'd get mostly blank looks and statements like "who is that? who are you talking about?" I think Cobain's death overshadows the music quite considerably, as everyone tries to read " pre - suicidal behavior out of cobains lyrics, and then pick to pieces his writing around the time of his death for meanings and insights into why he committed suicide... It's all about Cobain and why he died... not much about the band and its music - so in that regard it feels like the "band" Nirvana are slightly underrated. Against the myth and mystery of suicidal death, the music gets kinda overlooked. Would love to have a "best of" album, with tracks especially selected by Dave Grohl and Krist Novelesic - that would make for a good compilation, actually!

At the risk of sounding pedantic it was 1991
Considering Nirvana made 3 very good albums as oppose to 1 a greatest hits without You Know You're Right, All Apologies, Negative Creep, Aneuryism, Pennyroyal Tea, About a Girl, Scentless Apprentice, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, Blew... it just wouldnt be a 'best of'. Simple as. Last edited by Sneer; 01-02-2009 at 10:06 PM. |
