Album: The Initial Frontier Pt. 2
Artist: Vyre
Genre: Progressive Black Metal
Suggested by: mythsofmetal
Familiarity: None.

1. Naughtylus - I like the guitars at the start. The guitars in general are pretty atmospheric. The growls are good too! I'm getting a definite Death-doom feel here. Wow, this is really bloody awesome. There's a great middle section that gives me a bit of a Radiohead feel, especially with the guitar. The drums aren't spectacular, but they keep constant action throughout the entire song. The guitar solo towards the end is also great.

2. Diabolum ex machina - Playing up Pink Floyd a bit with the lyrics at the start. I could sort of hear the Gilmour influence in the guitar solo of the last song. This one's got that German krautrock feel to it. Of course, combined with doom metal. It changes its tone at just the right time, picking up to a death metal beat. For the first time, I can understand the lyrics, and I think they're pretty good. Like the last song, the guitars here are pretty entertaining. The guitarist loves to let the chords ring out for a little while. Back to the beautifully mechanical repetition for a little while, until a spooky section comes in, obviously inspired by the X-Files music. This one's starting to feel like it's going on for too long. I think it's not half-bad though.

3. RDR 66 - The shortest track at 7 minutes, it starts heavy already. For the first time, the vocals have to carry this track a bit. Do they do a good job? Yeah, I think so. A really cool guitar solo plays underneath the vocals, and a hell of a lot of other noise (drums, another guitar). The fact that they have so many things going on in this song gives me some extra incentive to love it. And I really do love it. A really angry song, this one.

4. For Carl - Cool intro, and then we get some symphonic stuff. Very epic indeed. Then the metallic riff comes back in. Then some ambient noise, and a brief guitar solo. I feel like this part should be a song of its own. All of a sudden, the drums and heavy guitars kick back in. I actually really like this one. The riff is very infectious.

5. Neutronenstern - This one has a bit more power metal influences. I hear some piano underneath the rest of the music. I think the song could have benefited from making the piano part a bit more audible, because from what I could hear, it was very cool. A section towards the end really finishes off the album well. I hear what sounds like synthesized singing really close to the end. I think they could have done with a real singer. Other than that, nothing to complain about.

I have been really surprised to hear how good this album is. It's definitely got something about it that's different than anything else I've ever heard. It's definitely not perfect, and there are parts that drag a bit, but other than that, it's a genuinely great progressive death metal album.

OVERALL RATING: 9/10

It's good that you liked it. I wasn't completely sure that you would, because I do also find it drags a bit sometimes and I only really like it on occasions when I'm really in the mood for something of its like.

In the description you fairly accurately labelled it progressive black metal. I think that genre best describes its base, although I find it a bit more experimental, rock oriented, and shoegazey than typical prog black metal. Plus that emphasis on Sci-fi, as you noted.

So, I'm unsure of how best to describe the genre for this next album, but I guess the base is death metal, but it's of a thrashier death metal ilk, and has strong symphonic/electronic, atmospheric/ambient, industrial/noise and some almost jazzy/technical sort-of influence, plus some possibly lightly present sort-of black metal and power/heavy metal in its sound. Might as well call it experimental, or avant-garde death metal, actually. It's The Key by Nocturnus. Here's the bandcamp page - The Key | Earache Records

So today I figured out that the Merzbox doesn't even encompass half of all of Merzbow's released music. Awesome.

Album: Yantra Material Action
Artist: Merzbow
Genre: Japanoise
Suggested by: grindy
Familiarity: None, but heard all the proceeding albums.

1. Untitled - This one feels dancy. Got some cool guitar work as well. Song changes about halfway through to some banging on metal instead of the regular electronic beats. There's some weird mumbling in the background as well. Generally pretty cool stuff.

2. Untitled - Lots of guitars in this one. And that's about it. I really like it. Doesn't last long enough to get boring.

3. Untitled - Soft drumming and some bumblebee-ish stuff. I love it.

4. Untitled - This one's got a lot of feedback to it. I can hear a piano part somewhere in there. Very dark and atmospheric. I really like this one as well.

5. Untitled - At a minute long, this is the shortest track. It's got a bit of a horror movie feel to it. Percussion and strings abound. A bit too short to say I loved it.

6. Untitled - Lots of tapping going on in this one. Yeah, this is another one of those that starts to get boring.

7. Untitled - A bit tribal, this one. It sounds like the soundtrack to an Asian film, except with Merzbow's signature weirdness thrown in. The song changes towards the end to a more dribbly sound along with tapping on metal. I like it a lot.

8. Untitled - For the last song, we've got some heavy sampling, most likely of Japanese television. More noise, and it's over. Pretty cool.

So overall, this is a pretty good album. With the new rating system, it may not get as good a rating as some previous ones, but I think this is my favorite Merzbow album so far. Like all of his albums, it's something you have to be in the mood for, but for me personally, it's a great noise album.

OVERALL RATING: 8.5/10

I'm still amazed that you're going through with that joke rec.
