The 'strings' you are hearing, is just a guitar. He plays it with a chello bow.

smallz 04-20-2006 02:26 PM

Great stuff, although I only have/heard one cd... I've definitely gotten into the folky post-rock kind of stuff lately.

cody robichaud 04-21-2006 01:45 PM

I've heard one song, it was posted on ebaums world, which was ok

Imonlydancing 04-22-2006 03:10 PM

I've heard them.
My friend loves them.
From what i've hear, i like them.

Rabid Sea Turtles 04-22-2006 03:12 PM

There be strings there, extras come on stage to play them in concert anyway.

shangrila 05-14-2006 07:20 AM

If anyone have the link of the band's songs , could you post?

Sound Devastation 05-14-2006 07:33 AM

theyre a good band, but theres better post-rock out there.

davidMC1982 05-22-2006 03:04 PM

Sigur Ros are great. I have two of their Albums, Aegetic Byrjun and (), both of which are very good. They're great for those nights when you sleep; intersting enough to listen to the whole album, but unobtrusive.

Dave

I just don't get how this band gets genre - ized. What is Post-rock anyway?
How does this band get there?

Sound Devastation 05-23-2006 03:36 AM

Quote:

Post-rock is a music genre characterized by nontraditional use of instruments and high musical density. Although firmly rooted in the indie scene, post-rock's elusive and complex style bears little resemblance musically to indie rock or other styles more commonly associated with the scene. The connection with the indie scene is more closely related to the fact that post-rock music is often recorded on independent labels, and therefore sharing the same level of obscurity.

The term was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue 123 of The Wire (May 1994) to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and power chords."

As mentioned above, the post-rock sound incorporates a wide variety of musical genres, such as ambient, jazz, electronica, experimental, and sometimes even rock itself. The post-rock approach to music, including emphasis on instrumental work and sound textures, is similar to the earlier New Age movement, which came out of the modern folk tradition.

Lyrics are often omitted from post-rock music, however this does not necessarily mean vocals are always absent. Some post-rock bands employ vocals as an instrument, incidental to the overall sound, rather than the more traditional use where clean, interpretable vocals are important for poetic and lyrical meaning. Post-rock vocals are usually soft and droning, and can be infrequent or present in irregular intervals. Jessica Bailiff is a good example of this style of droning vocals. Sigur Rós, a band known for their distinctive vocals, have even fabricated a language which they call 'Hopelandic', described by the band as "a form of gibberish vocals that fits to the music and acts as another instrument"

that was taken from Wikipedia, written by post-rock fans to describe the genre. Sigur Ros are post-rock because of their structure and atmosphere, minimalistic musicianship and soundscapes.

i was just saying theres better stuff. Jeniferever and Gregor Samsa are both vocal, atmospheric post-rock bands and far superior IMO.

Frances 05-23-2006 05:07 AM

Man, I still think boxing artists in sucks ass. These guys, to me anyway, don't seem to conform to post-rock, well they do, but they also could be called so many other genres. Genres suck!

Sound Devastation 05-23-2006 05:34 AM

i didnt say it to box in sigur ros.. they box themselves in, though its a very very open box.

anyway, yes genres suck, but theyre useful to describe music. saying 'theres better post-rock' is far easier than saying 'theres better bands that do a similar kind of thing'..

boo boo 05-23-2006 09:38 AM

^ True.

Though of all the post rock bands i have heard, i still like Sigur Ros the most.

EDGE 07-07-2006 03:18 PM

almost wet myself when I saw them live.

I'll agree with the gregor samsa comment.

207307 07-09-2006 05:23 PM

I have heard of them, I know they are a very interesting post-rock band, but I havent listened to them. I hope to soon, as I love that kind of music :)

either/or 08-21-2006 08:07 AM

Sigur ros

amazing icelandic dream band. sometimes sing in another language. check them out. tell me what you think. im having a hard time to comprehend their beauty.

Alo 08-21-2006 09:08 AM

 Great band!

But I lost my cd, I had Takk. But I never got to listening to older albums.
Are they any good?

Sound Devastation 08-21-2006 09:53 AM

good, but slightly overrated band - there are better bands of a similar style out there.

their best album IMO is ()

beat yr own KID 08-21-2006 10:35 AM

Takk is one of the best albums everrrrrrr

swim 08-21-2006 10:55 AM

They're hit or miss with me. I love some of it and hate some of their stuff as well.

I've seen you say that about numerous albums now.... Make up your mind!

sleepy jack 08-21-2006 11:53 AM

I love everything I've head by them, I think my favorite album is ( ) though or maybe that's just because I've been listening to it alot more than I use to. I don't think there's many bands doing what Sigur Ros do better then them I think people just say that because they're on a major label and popular now.

hiu 08-21-2006 02:17 PM

Whats wrong with music.

Violet Cookie 09-21-2006 02:18 PM

I love Sigur Rós. I have Takk and Aegetic Bryjun. Both brilliant albums.
I had the chance to see them a few months ago at a music festival. But I decided to stay in the pit and watch RHCP with my friends cause I was too chicken **** to wonder off on my own...Biggest regret of the summer!

either/or 09-21-2006 08:26 PM

sigur ros are the greatest band of all time. they are not from this earth.

spinner 09-21-2006 11:51 PM

I really like Sigur Ros but usually I stick my favorite tracks onto mixes with stuff like Mogwai and GYBE. A whole album at once can get tedious sometimes.
But I still like them!

NeedleInTheHay 09-23-2006 07:51 PM

Anyone hear Sigur Ros do that collaboration with The Album Leaf?

TrampInaTux 09-24-2006 01:39 AM

My girlfriend bumloves these. Really hard. I'm gonna have to download some of their stuff methinks... I've only heard their music on the odd advert.

Sigur Ros are reportedly in the process of recording the follow up to the 2005 hit "Takk".

Bassist Greg Holm has written, "we have finished recordinga few songs but some more things need to be done... we really are just experimenting at this stage. Some of the songs we have recorded are old songs, which we had written a while ago... we decided it was time we recorded them."

The band is expected to finish recording the record this year, even though nothing officially had been confirmed, it is possible there could be a 2007 release.
*dances*

For a lot of slow movers, Sigur Rós-- the DJ Screw of the post-rock set-- sure do accomplish plenty; though it's been some time since their last record, Takk, plodded its way through the glacier of our hearts, the frosty foursome have the rest of the year blocked out for a string of big projects.

Hlemmur, the 2002 Ólafur Sveinsson documentary to which Sigur Rós provided the soundtrack, will be joined alongside its soundtrack for your purchasing pleasure in July. August will see a new, as-yet-untitled EP, the tracklist for which can be found by looking down. October finds a live DVD of their summer 2006 jaunt around Iceland, as well as a full-length album of acoustic (!!) Sigur Rós tunes store-ward bound. And in the wee hours of next year, a DVD/CD combo of their orchestral Odin's Raven Magic-- an Edda poem composed circa 1500 A.D.-- will land in shops. And, of course, there's also the Sigur Rós fanbook we announced last Thursday to tide you over.

Shucks, all I've got planned for the rest of the year is lunch.

EP:

01 Von (new version)
02 Salka
03 Lagið í gær
04 Rokklagið

Wow that looks busy. Can't wait for a followup to Takk... - easily my favourite lie back in a field and listen at full volume album
