Not the most friendly band... It seems like Jon really resents the whole "Hopelandic" thing.

garbanzo 03-13-2009 11:58 PM

well i've given them a thorough listen, and here's my conclusion:

Von - 2.5 / 5
Ágætis Byrjun - 4.5 / 5
() - 3 / 5
Takk - 3.5 / 5
Hvarf/Heim - 4 / 5
Međ Suđ... - 4 / 5

i dig it!

Roygbiv 03-14-2009 12:00 AM

you gave med sud more than takk?

listen to takk again. it's often better than agaetis.

not as sonicaly impressive, but in terms of balance and diversity.

yeah i know, i am swimming against the current here. i just find () to be a bit boring, that's all. the sound is really monotonous, and not much happens.

Takk is a good album, maybe 3.5 is a bit harsh. but it has several tracks on it i really don't like, which kind of spoils things for me. though Hoppípolla is perhaps my favourite of all their songs!

the reason Međ Suđ is way up there is because it's faster and bolder than the rest. i guess die-hard fans don't like this departure from their usual style, but really, taken as a work unto itself, without worrying about the rest of their stuff, it's really quite nice. plus it fits better into my general shuffle than the lazy songs from their previous work...

GravitySlips 03-15-2009 07:24 AM

I find most of their albums to be a mix of really great songs, and really boring songs. My favourite is probably ()

shuffle? I assume you listen to Sigur Ros on your iPod on your way to work or whilst being active? If so, I can see how Med Sud would rank higher for you, since it's not a solid album from begginning to end, but each individual song is great, so it's easier to accept the album for its individual tracks.

But when you're home one day with nothing to do for about two hours, listen to Takk... again. I used to dismiss it after Hoppipolla, but if you listen to it from beginning to end, you get to see how each song plays off the one that came right before. They do a fantastic job of making it atmospheric and engaging, which was a problem in Agaetis which was just atmospheric.

and I agree with ( ). It's impossible for me to listen to it from beginning to end. It's either I listen to the first four tracks or the last four tracks.

We're like polar opposites on Sigur Ros. Agaetis and () are the standouts for me... near-perfect albums IMO. Takk is good but is very bland in between the standout tracks. With that said, Gong may be my favorite song from them. Med Sud is good at first, but gets old really fast.

QFT. This is very apparent on Agaetis Byrjun

Son of JayJamJah 06-23-2009 01:38 PM

It is insanely boring to me, a lot of the music is like dead air, I regret deciding to give it another try this week.

I think Takk is one of the most up and down records I have ever listened to. You'd be hard pressed to find me a better song than Gong from anybody, but between the standouts (Gong, Saeglopur, Hoppipolla) it seems like a lot of filler relative to their work on Agaetis and ().

adidasss 06-23-2009 03:14 PM

You're wrong, Takk is a masterpiece from start to finish. None of their other albums come close to its consistency...

Except Ágætis byrjun...

Blue 06-23-2009 05:12 PM

This is incredibly exciting.

That sounds right up my alley. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love every single album they've released (except I haven't heard Von, sadly), but I've always been a huge fan of down-tempo, ambient, minimalist compositions. I think I'm going to love it.

Takk is my favourite album too. I don't really find myself having ups and downs when I listen to it... I enjoy all of it.

Gavin B. 06-28-2009 12:27 AM

Has anyone seen the Sigur Ros docmentary Heima? It's the closest thing spiritual experience you'll have watching a movie.

Embedded is a clip from it. This concert is at night during the summer when it's daylight for 23 hours a day. It's some remote location north of the Arctic Circle.

crazymenrunningback 06-28-2009 11:29 PM

Sigur ros never appealed to me. My fav post rock band is slint. For me sigur ros and and slint are uncomparable.

Yeah, stylistically. The bands both get pigeonholed into "post-rock" but they share very little in common. My thing is with Sigur Ros... I can't name one band that sounds remotely like them at any point.

Engine 06-29-2009 05:18 PM

Of all the bands that I like but never listen to - Sigur Ros is one of my favorite.
On a side note: Some of my friends played ( ) at their wedding during the hour or so of milling about before the ceremony. It worked perfectly. Remember this when you're getting married and want cool music in the wedding, kids.
Also, I have never been able to get this video out of my mind since I saw it - The Pixies meeting Sigur Ros at their studio in Iceland. Probably the coolest workspace I have ever seen.

Astronomer 06-29-2009 05:59 PM

^ That's awesome. I want to play Sigur Ros at my wedding.

My future wife better like Sigur Ros, because this is happening.

+81 07-04-2009 06:43 PM

Has anyone else heard Jonsi's project, Riceboy Sleeps? I think it's up there with some of the best Sigur Ros.

:( Takk is one of my favourites along with ( )

sweet_nothing 07-12-2009 06:04 PM

For Me:
Ágætis byrjun
( )
Takk...
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

Pretty much the order they came out I guess, Ive never heard Von though.

This would be my list with Von ahead of Med Sud

Correction: I assumed you had () in front, but you did not.

million dollar basher 07-15-2009 03:52 PM

That song "Starfulr" (I'm sorry if I butchered the spelling) that appeared on the "Life Aquatic" soundtrack was one of my favorites for a while, despite the fact that the lead singer reminds me of Nell.

Zer0 07-16-2009 03:01 PM

In my opinion:

'()' Definatly the high water mark of their career so far. It's just a fantastic experience from beginning to end.
Ágætis Byrjun Another stunning piece of work, some really great tracks but doesn't have as much direction as '()'
Takk... The last half of the album is great, and Sæglopur is my fav SR song, but some tracks on the first half of the album go in one ear and out the other.
Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaus A good album overall, some really great poppier songs on the first half of the album, but the last half really tests my attention and patience.
Von The least impressive in my opinion although has a couple of good tracks. Overall it sounds like a band trying to find their sound.

WhiteHeaven 07-17-2009 03:27 AM

I think their new album where not so hot, it was way to commerical....

Jester 07-31-2009 08:51 PM

I like when it rains and I walk in it while listening to Ágætis Byrjun.

alphacore 08-01-2009 09:04 PM

All of his music is very influential on what i do And i personal always have him in my music playlist rotation..

Agreed :) Especially with Hoppípolla which means 'hopping into puddles.'

I prefer their change in sound to them continuously trying to re create the magic that happened on their 2nd on 3rd album.

FaSho 08-02-2009 07:14 PM

Finally got Takk. I can see why some people rate it as their best album, it's a lot...happier then their other releases with out being as poppy as their newest album. Great stuff.

gunnels 08-02-2009 07:22 PM

Milano is pretty much just perfect.

Dr.Tchock 08-06-2009 03:57 PM

Agaetis Byrjun is brilliant. I cannot believe I used to think that they were boring.

I see if I can get ( ) next.

FaSho 08-07-2009 02:27 PM

Anyone wanna pass over their debut?
