But what of the influence? Underground styles bring inspiration to the mainstream. Bowie cited DG as an influence on his last album, and I'm sure there are other popular artists influenced by them. Same goes for lots of other groups.

This is true but they themselves never make it to the pinnacle. They don't get to the mainstream themselves. There are loads of people out there that have NO idea who Death Grips is.
