Those are definitely good ones. He's got so many, and I can't even tell you how many times I've not liked some of his songs and then sometime later I hear it in a different way and it begins to grow on me. I'd say give those a some more listens. I would also recommend planet waves, desire, oh mercy and new morning.

You never know, though. Some of the less critically acclaimed albums are just as good if not better to me. Like I said, not all Dylan fans are the same. Some people like the electric stuff, some like the acoustic. Some like the old, some like the new.

I listened to Knocked Out Loaded while on the bus today. Honestly, the only things I remember about the album is Brownsville Girl and that the album's title is dropped in the last song...I think. Definitely not engaging for me.

I'll check it out next for the sake of hearing everything, but if it's more of the Knocked Out Loaded style I'm really not looking forward to it.

Aside from the songs I knew, not really. But that's how most albums are for me on the first few listens.

Oh Mercy is one of Dylan's best albums. Tempest is a great album, Tin Angel would be my favourite track on the album, it's gettin' played aplenty.

Someone convince me to like Time out of mind and modern times. I've only listened to them once, just got it the other day. They're not bad, I probably prefer time out of mind. my favorite from Modern Times so far is"Nettie Moore". I must be missing something because they're supposed to be great. Perhaps I need to give it more time. I don't think either one can compete with oh Mercy! As far as I've heard, that was his last great album.

"time out of mind" is growing on me. As of now I'd say it's his best album since "oh mercy!". Is it just a coincidence that Lanois produced both these albums? I'm not sure, but it seems that he certainly knows how to produce A Dylan record.

Dylan`s title, incidently, comes an old song called Junker`s Blues, which was re-written in 1951 as Junco Partner. On Dr.John`s excellent version of it, the lyrics are more or less:-
Down the road came po` old Junko
Boys he was loaded as he could be
Body was knocked out, knocked out loaded
`N`he was wobblin`all down the street.

^ Yes, Howard, although it`s very lightweight and has more covers than originals, tracks like Silvio, Shenandoah, 90 Miles An Hour make it worthwhile. For me it`s one of those albums that could`ve been good if it had been spliced up with some better material.

^ I can`t answer your question about Lanois, but I share your earlier misgivings about Time Out Of Mind; too many depressing songs for my liking, and not enough musical excitement.

As much as I've listened to Desire I never really realized just how bad ass the harmonica playing in "Isis" is. He just tears it up.

Just learned how to play "black diamond bay" and I must say I really love that chord progression, and the song of course. It's such a basic chord progression but he gets so much out of it. It's one of those Dylan songs that can be kind of difficult to sing. You're playing along, getting into the feel of the song, then he throws this line in that doesn't fit with the groove of the song. Then you realize that he just stays on that certain chord for a few more beats. Simple trick but it's pretty cool. Sorta free form, if you catch my drift.
