Here is my take. If you are talking COMMERCIAL Country music, it is one of my LEAST favorite forms of music. As a matter of fact, apart from Rap, it IS the worst. I don't blame the artists... I blame the Nashville music machine. IF the artists had any creativity to begin with, it was probably removed by the record executives. Most Country artists are not allowed to sing their own songs, and that would be dependent on them even being able to write a song to start with.

Most Country singers are just good looking people who can strum a few guitar chords, sing in the stereotypical voice, and fit a certain mold.

Now, if you are talking Alt. Country or Bluegrass, I'm on board. Bluegrass players are some of the finest musicians on the planet. Alt. Country is essentially a good Folk singer/songwriter, who has a Country twinge, usually taken from the early days of Country. That music has heart. It has passion. It is genuinely the artform of the ARTIST, and not someone pulling his/her strings.

Okay, that's enough from my soap box.

I have nothing against country music, except that my aunt in hillbilly Harrison, Michigan made me listen to it once, and I vomited in my new Lexus, or that all her kids who listen to that crap look like autistic bastards from the 1950, no I hate your mullets, your banjo’s and you possum stew, your sister/wife, I hate everything country but Shaiah Twains sweet ass.
I would rather be in a pick up truck listening to some Hank Williams rather than sitting in my "new" Lexus missing out on life thinking I am better than everyone. If Shania Twain is what you think of when you hear the word "country" clearly you have much to learn...

Country has it's good points and bad points just like any other genre. In my opinion what is currently popular in the world of country music is mostly garbage, but that doesn't mean the genre as a whole is bad. I mean Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson make it worthwhile all by themselves and they're just the tip of the iceberg.

Being from Wyoming I was born and raised to country music, and while it's nowhere near my favorite... Every now and then I get a craving for it.

This is an interesting thread. Country music is, indeed, a broad genre. I initially began listening to Country on the radio as a diversion to all the repetitive and recycled popular music available. I was able to push a button on my radio and just slow down a little and listen to songs that were not familiar to me at the time. Once I began listening as a diversion, I grew to re-discover 'roots' aspects of the music form and I eventually grew tired of what many refer to as pop country. I agree with the critics of the new Country music. There is some stuff on the radio that is great with nice lyrics and hooks, but there is just as much that is absolute rubbish. I think it's the same in all genres of music, yeah? Personally, listening to 'pop country' led me down other roads to explore forms of music that I had not previously even considered... music with roots elements that would not be defined as 'Country' by most.

Willie Nelson is a talented and prolific artist. When you get involved in as MUCH stuff as he has, there are bound to be some stinkers. There is a lot of love for Johnny Cash on this message forum, but he has put out a LOT of garbage, too. There are few artists (I'll say 'no artists') as prolific as these that don't lay a few eggs along the way, including Johnny Cash.

It's unfair to knock all country music. I'm no massive fan myself, but I still think Almost Blue by Elvis Costello and All I Intended To Be by Emmylou Harris are wonderful albums

Crazy! The compliments are amazing!

I think it is all in how you look at music. Sure, some of the country songs sound country. But it's called country. However, the genre is one of the widest in sounds out there. Ok. So, I didn't go to school to be a music major but I should have. My point is that, country uses just about all the other genres to its advantage. You have country(classical), country(jazz), country(pop) - See, what I mean?!

Speaking of which, anyone know of any good music schools? I am considering taking classes or returning to school for music. It is my passion. If you know a good school alternative, let me know. Someone suggested Recording Connection? Got any clues here? I'd like a life line, Meredith? LOL
