Why do you like Country?

Country music today has become much too poppy for my tastes. I understand people like it and I respect that. Now, that being said there is plenty of good musicians still out there.

I'm a huge fan of the early musicians in the genre though. Also guys like Townes and such. Hank Williams is my all time favorite musician and Townes is right up there, too. Anyway, I like it so much because its just so personal. I also grew up listening to country music, and I think that's a lot of what sparked my fascination with it. Usually its not complex music, but I don't see that as a problem at all. I love hearing emotion and passion in music and with country music I feel plenty of that. Its a lot like the Blues in that respect. I love the blues, too.

Theres a lot of high caliber musicians in country, I love the song writing, and certain styles of singing as well.

I like country every once in a while.. My favorite album is Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw. It's just a really touching album.. got a lot of meaning and heart in it with some fun as well.

In terms of why I like country, I guess I would have to say that it's for one of two reasons. Like with the above, country can be very touching and have a good meaning. I hate it when people say country music is all negative and sobby, that's not true at all. And another reason I like country is when it's just a good time, for example why I like Trace Adkins- Honky Tonk Badonkadonk anyone?

I like older country when it was country-western I also like some country that I knew in my younger days but thats the only real reason, I don't listen to much of my o =wn volition mainly just because of the lyrical content, I feel like I'm hearing the same song over and over, thats part of my problem with quite a few genre's

but I have been exposed to country by my parents since I was a child so my normal disdain for it could also just be a little bit of a rebellious action as well

I tend to like classic country - Hank, Loretta, Patsy, Johnny - mostly because of the stories their songs told, and the fact that they usually focused on feelings of sadness, loneliness, love gone bad, and shame at having done bad deeds, or if not shame, at least a desire to confess bad deeds. Sometimes the stories were simpler, told straightforwardly ("I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die"), or more pop-oriented format, like Patsy's countrypolitan leanings. Sometimes they were more complex, and sometimes focused on ghostly legends of the past ("Ghost Riders In the Sky").

These days, I tend to prefer 'Americana,' or what some people might call 'alternative country,' or 'gothic country.' I like music that tends to focus on darker feelings - obsessions, hopelessness, sadness, loneliness, anger, murderous intent. And most goth country lyrics tend to encompass all these things. It's good music to listen to when you're feeling bad, or just one of those people who likes to hear a sad tale about bad deeds gone wrong, an obsession unmet, a love unrequited. I don't hear any of those things in popular country music. The only popular country song that's come close in recent years is Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," a simple but affecting song about loneliness. The rest of the pop country pantheon tends to bore me to tears. ...Well, all except Dolly Parton. I'd wade through a river of rhinestones, big hair, fake nails and eyelashes just to hear her sing "Jolene."

i dunno - they sing about killing people, drinking, womanising and can get away with it

rappers do that and they're constantly on the firing line

some of the lyrics are more extreme than gangsta rap, but the music is contrapuntal to it in some ways, that's why I like it - e.g. Cash's Delia's Gone or Cocaine Blues
