They were indeed a guitar band and definitely guitar heroes. They were the final statement concerning rock’n’roll guitar that was born as Chuck Berry hit its stride with Hendrix and died in the atonal roar of early Sonic Youth.

I don't agree on a personal listening level but I respect the opinion. Goo and Daydream Nation were my first exposures to SY so the nostalgia levels beat down any taste changes that have occurred since. I've expanded my preferences for more experimental or "unsafe" sounds but I can still go back to easy peazy late 80's/early 90's staples any day of the week.

Lee surrendered too much power his way. Thurston was very charismatic but the better sounds came out of Lee’s guitar.

I know what you mean by the superfan thing but Thurston’s legacy goes way beyond that. Thurston and Lee jointly are the last two guitar legends.

I think they had a better approach and a wider depth of influence like being Swell Maps fanatics and such than most popular 90's groups

Sonic Youth are an 80’s group. Along with Big Black and the Butthole Surfers and Dinosaur Jr they were what made the 80s the greatest decade rock’n’roll would ever know.

Their crazy Branca tunings and screwdrivers and hammers bending the strings into howling madness in way that felt sacred. They were definitely pioneers. There’s no playing the who did what first game. They brought it on stage uncompromised and made it rock’n’roll. It didn’t matter that only 20 people showed up. Profound music history was made and they murdered rock’n’roll guitar. They took it to the conclusion and ripped it to shreds.
