Chula that's not what you said.
Also all of those things can be true at once. |
We use terrorism as shorthand in this country, like we shortcut the word racist or fascist to apply when it's technically incorrect. I try to not get to tied up in knots about it, but I'm sympathetic to both arguments.
For the record: Terrorism - 1. "premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents" 2. "the use of violence or threat of violence especially against civilians in the pursuit of political aims, religious, or ideological change" So you need to be a) not a national majority (Basque separatists, Klansmen, Tamil Tigers) b) acting in support of political goals (IRA - independence from England, ISIS - establishment of an Islamic Caliphate) and c) target non-combatants (lynchings, purposeful vehicular collisions, nightclub shootings, etc.). As of 3 PM EST, October 2, 2017, we're only sure about C. American media is incredibly hypocritical in that they generally don't reserve this kind of circumspection when the shooter is brown or has squiggles on his twitter feed. But they are, technically, correct in not calling this terrorism. For now. Also, fuuuuuccckkk that CBS lawyer. Not a single person deserves to die for their beliefs, whether religious, political, or other. Not. A. Single. One. She's no liberal. Glad she was fired. |

It's been 16 months since the shooting. Ya'd think more info to back the ISIS claim would have come out by now. Quote:
So during my three hour standoff with the cops I'll hop on Facebook and find all of the most recent radical Islam stories and get a few talking points to feed 9-1-1 so that the narrative goes that way, instead of my sexual orientation. In a weird way it reminds me of the convicted child molester and killer sitting on death row with no remorse at all. Then on his last day, he asks for a priest out of desperation to absolve all of his sins in an effort to get into heaven. |

This conversation is dumber than a bag of hammers. Life is not black and white Chula. ISIS wasn't his key motivation, but it did play a role in it. |

So what do you guys think should be done about the guns then?
Leave at as it is as it's gone too far/too many guns/pointless? Tighter controls/background checks before purchasing? Ban them (I know it's not possible now)? Granted I'm not American, but if I lived over there I'd want the authorities to clamp down hard on firearms now. Yeah it will still happen, but 1 mass shooting is better than 100, and the less weapons among the population, the less likely stuff like this is to happen. |

Alright I'm not gonna go back and quote somebody five pages back, but I don't think it makes sense to call this terrorism. I don't think it makes sense to call that Muslim who shot up the gay bar terrorism (even if I did at the time I'm calling bull**** on myself). To me making the definition of terrorism is so vague as to become useless. Including this or Columbine or other "lone wolf" attacks or attacks by people who are just crazy, angry, and isolated from society makes no sense. Why should any of those acts be equated to 9/11 or suicide bombings perpetrated by organizations who are essentially non-state armies? It's just a way to talk about muslim terrorists without using the word "muslim".
Even if it's not the dictionary definition I think the only way for terrorism to make sense as a concept is to use it to describe those paramilitary organizations like Al Qaeda and the IRA that operation in those general modus operandi. Cause, again, what's the point of putting this guy in Vegas in the same boat as Osama Bin Laden? What the **** do they even have in common besides killing a bunch of civilians? What purpose is being served? And yeah I was definitely a cock in that thread about the Paris shooting. |

a big part of is assumptions, seems like a lot of key figures on the right think everyone on the left wants to “take their guns,” while it seems like the left tends to think that everyone on the right wants no gun regulations whatsoever. if it wasn’t such an us vs them mentality we wouldn’t have to have this conversation. there’s nothing more disgusting than social media after an event like this. half of the people are hoping the killer is muslim so they can use it for their agenda, the other half wants him to be white so that they can. people can be gross. |

23 guns in his hotel room at Mandalay Bay and another 19 back at his home. That's 42 guns total. Most semi-automatic rifles that had been coverted to full automatic. The shooter's brother hinted that he was pretty well off financially. He also said that when he helped him move a few months back he only had a couple of handguns in a safe and maybe one long rifle but not of the assault variety.
So how the bloody hell did this guy purchase dozens of guns over a short period of time without sending up any warning signals? Here in California the gun buying process is pretty stringent. I had to fill out a federal application for a background check, which included a notary verified thumb print. Then I purchased the gun and the serial number was inputted into the national database to align with my info and print. Then there's a 5 day waiting period before you can actually obtain the gun - after you pass a written safety test as well as a "how to handle" test in front of the dealer who sold you the gun. When all was said and done my generic plain jane Glock 19 ended up costing me about $500. And if I had wanted to purchase another gun I would have had to have waited 60 days. Quote:

Either way, still messed up that he had 42 freaking guns. I'm a total guitar slut and went through a period where I had tons of disposable income about a dozen years ago - and the most guitars I've ever owned at any one time was no more than 10. |

I'm reluctant to post any thoughts about the Las Vegas incident on here because I'm positive it will end with me face-palming and throwing my keyboard at the wall. But, I will say this, once I do a proper report and get it published to my website, I will share it.

I can debunk it without even reading it.
1. Those windows were always blocked out. 2. Eyewitness reports are not scientific documents. 3. Early inaccuracies in reporting does not equal a cover up. 4. You need more than fishiness to justify your assertions. 5. Find a better way to make money. |
