Watching a couple live streams last night of protests here, and I'm good. No desire to join them. The cops had barricaded every feasible way for them to get to the freeway lol, so this group of 100+ are just walking around in circles talking about how "omg you guys it's only 10pm, I say we stay out until like 2am!"

Eventually they all got tired and drove home in their hybrids.

A group of people here lit candles and prayed with the police before driving home in their black pick-up trucks and SUVs.

One candle got knocked over by an unleashed dog and the owner was very apologetic. The virus found a few new hosts to replicate in and the storms are on the ocean.

No real unity until he throws his badge away

Lots of cops like to be cute and pose for pictures. Or give out ice cream, pet your dog, etc. They try to humanize themselves. The next minute they're shooting rubber bullets at you. Or lighting you up on your own porch.

Or like in Montreal, they thought the cops were taking a knee to show solidarity, so everyone started cheering, until they realized the cops were just putting on their gas masks so they could gas the crowd lol

I’m mixed on this. The military presence that was meant to protect Ceaușescu turned on him and executed him. You’re 100% right on the photo ops and I dont think there’s any love here either. But on the other hand those weapons can point in any direction. And they have more than tear gas and rubber bullets. A deeply fractured chain of command is unlikely but these are crazy times. High unemployment also causes instability.

The most respectful peaceful arrest possible still results in a lifetime of state sanctioned violence. This started great but it’s become a re-affirmation of the same racist capitalist power structure. A huge peaceful demonstration makes a statement and that statement is even though we have the numbers and the power we submit to your authority and refuse to create change. The right to peacefully assemble is the right to put your oppression on display.

Some of them are literally getting on their knees, putting their hands up and telling them not to shoot just to be tear gassed and shot. Peaceful protests have become literal signs of submission.

60ish people currently being arrested for breaking curfew. Kids mostly. As if our jails aren't already overcrowded as it is.. they'll be out in a few hours. Hanging out in booking is not bad.
