No. Their awareness of such things is about on par with their knowledge of geometry.

i try not to judge people or challenge their beliefs (unless they are up for the discussion) but everyday i have to pass a giant billboard on the highway with a big red x over a diagram of the evolution of man saying "in the beginning god created..." next to a picture of earth. i get upset and i lose a little faith in humanity every time i see it.

Does anyone else think it's interesting how fuming people can become with religion. Someone disagrees about a food, art, sport, etc. there discussion, but someone disagrees about religion and so many emotions run wild. What do you think causes that?

Are you really asking why discussions around or even stabs at something that often defines peoples lives and even reality occasionally makes people upset?

Or are you just trying to up your postcount? If it's the latter, posting here doesn't add to it.

I think it's a perfectly valid question, and I also think if people truly believed they wouldn't get upset over having their beliefs challenged. Challenge a Buddhist's beliefs, for instance, and there's nothing you could do to get them heated. Call the Buddha a donkey's ass... they'll only think you're making an ass of yourself. I think the real reason people must be so sensitive is because they don't actually believe, or to some degree think it's absurd to believe.

Roughly summed up, I believe people get defensive about stuff they care about. It's a simple, plausible explanation which explains not just why some people may get angry in discussions about religion, but also about cats, cookery or what have you.

That's a nice hypothesis, but for argument's sake, you don't actually know if this is true. At least not for all buddhists.

What I'm getting at is exactly what cardboard adolescent said. I think people aren't truly certain of their beliefs, and when they're challenged, they try to convince themselves just as much as they try to convince the other person that what they believe is true.

Well, I feel quite certain about my beliefs and when I'm angered in discussions about them, I've never felt it was because of my own insecurities. There are other feelings there that I can identify, such as anger at people's misunderstanding or blatant ignorance.

I tend to think that's what I'm expressing when I get angry. If I get angry because of insecurities regarding what I believe, well - then that's buried deepier than the concious me is aware of.

yeah you really can't upset a true buddhist. i agree with cardboard adolescent...if you truly deeply believed in your religion you should be laughing at another's ignorance, not getting angrily defensive. i think it is because christians and the like see how easily holes are poked in their arguments and get upset when someone starts to.
