The only problem with that argument though is religion is to blame for many more bad events, especially in the Middle East. Yes, it was created by man and therefore human cruelty is ultimately to blame but religion is very it's own entity now. It doesn't accurately reflect humanistic and modern values; it reflects ancient values. So when racism, sexism, and all these sort of things are done by a society that is dominated by the teachings of a specific religion...then religion is to blame, not, human nature.

"Religion is the primitive form of philosophy", Ayn Rand once said (though I am sure it has been used elsewhere.) Islamic totalitarianism, Christian totalitarianism, and a totalitarianism based on altruism (though not a religion) will all lead to the same destination, destruction. The Middle East probably the most terrifying examples of religion in government. To say that religion is not the cause would be false. However, to say all religions are responsible for what one religion does is bigotry.

The main problem is how people view government and the respect for life (not in a "pro-life" sense.) I see no difference between religious people trying to force their morals on me and the people who say that I must give my hard-earned money to other people based on another irrational morality. Actually there is one difference. The altruists at least don't believe in a morality that says, "It is right because God says so..."

I think they think that your wrong for not being the way they are. Its just part of the way they were brought up. Its not like this old woman didn't know the consequences of her actions. The American government is really worried about being civil. Basically it could be that way here and you would think nothing of it since that's just how it is.

Just because something's a law for a long time doesn't make it right. That's why authority should always be questioned.

Regardless of how you feel, I promise it does not matter to them. Also as stated before if it was that way here you would not care. Its a big deal to you because your used to sitting down on you azz and watching american idol to text vote in the next crappy thing. Honestly its a big deal because we do find it civil.

No, but your post, while right in principle, is ironic.

Yes, but if you take religion out of the equation there's still just as much conflict and cruelty, religion has had a large part in stabilizing the world, if it had never existed the world wouldn't be any better off.

Fair enough, but you're still missing the point. If religion had never existed the world wouldn't be any better off, to pretend otherwise is just a cop out. Cruelty and discrimination would still exist in equal amounts, people would just have a different excuse or none at all.

No, a cop out is saying "if religion never existed than the world would be no different." When you look at the history of the Middle East you'll see religion has done nothing to stabilize the region and is what is tearing it apart. Cruelty exists in that area because of religion; it has nothing to do with some desire in all humans to inflict pain on one another. Muslims extremists, suicide bombers, Islamofascism and the lashing of this woman all exist because of religion, not in spite of it. Religion has been the most intellectually dangerous thing of the past several centuries, to argue the world would be no different without at it is just stupid.

One thing I can't stand is how Christians use stuff like this as examples of Islam being an evil religion. When the Bible itself is even more sexist than an Andrew Dice Clay comedy special.

But yeah, the Qur'an is so sexist it's ridiculous.
