Default Political Correctness and You.

So, this seems to be popping up on the site from time to time and is a bit of a hot issue lately. For the most part this site comes across pretty liberal- no surprise as it's a forum dedicated to arts. But, once in a while a bit of heat bubbles up. Words are exchanged. People are offended. Et cetera.

Right, so I made this thread as way for people to express their viewpoints on the value of being 'politically correct'. There's a better way to put it than that tired and poorly reputed phrase but whatever. I've arranged some questions, interested in hearing back from you peeps. With Butthead temporarily (?) gone I'm hoping this doesn't become completely one-sided. I'm a little buzzed, perhaps the questions I've come up with are too basic. If you can think of better ones, post um!!!
  • Do you consider yourself a PC person?
  • Is being PC important to you?
  • How do you feel about casual use of hate speech/slurs such as 'nigg@' or 'f@ggot'?
  • Do you feel like people are often times too easily offended? If so, at what point do you draw the line?
  • Do you feel there's a difference between prejudicial bigotry (I.E, the KKK) and ignorance/insensitivity to people who are in some cases seen as different?
  • How do you respond to things/people that offend you? Do you find your responses have a positive, negative, or any impact?

I'd say I'm generally PC because I watch what I say depending on the context. I do say some things that would offend some but I try to make sure it's the right climate. For example, pseudo-racism can be funny; me and my black roommate have comical racist exchanges all the time and it's pretty funny. However, I wouldn't go into that territory if I didn't know the person well or if I was with, say, my grandmother.

It's all about context.

I don't really get offended so I can't answer your last questin.

Eh. Honestly it kind of bugs me the way the term "politically correct" is misused. What it meant, at least originally, was politicians cynically saying things in a way to appeal to the broadest possible base. Then conservatives got a hold of it and started using it as a stick to beat progressives with for believing in treating people equally. Now everyone, progressives included, seems to have bought into the conservative way of using it. I guess it's kind of an interesting lesson in how language evolves, but it's also sort of annoying.

I tried to address that in the original post. Couldn't think of a better way to put it. I should've clarified but what I mean by being politically correct- pretty much just what you said in the bolded part, and also adding not making racist/sexist/homophobic statements, etc.

My comment wasn't meant as swipe at your post or anything, just my cranky griping about language.

Equality doesn't really exist. How could it? I guess we can pretend.

Anyway, Jans is right, the term is literally saying Political Correctness as opposed to Actual Correctness.

some examples:
African-American instead of Black
Caucasian instead of White
Homophobe instead of Bigot
Xenophobe instead of Racist

I'm not going to answer any of the OP questions because someone will want to shame whatever I say and I'm too sensitive for that.

dude, i mean i get you're kinda (?) kidding but the whole idea was to bring people's feelins on **** like this up in a place where they could be discussed maturely. that was the main point of the last question, trying to deter that kind of behavior because imo shaming people for feeling indifferent or for being offensive is counter-productive.
