I think when they do it for little child it's most painful thing in your life that can be because it's your Penis Foreskin , Oh god what a religion.

I'd say it has little to do with religion and is more of a cultural thing and less or a religious one.

I'd say it's the exact opposite. Maybe it's more of a cultural thing now, if you compare the rates of circumcision in the US to Europe, for example, but the roots of circumcision are in religion. Especially the Abrahamic religions - Islam and Judaism mostly. Pretty much every Muslim and Jewish male is circumcised at birth.

I'm not very concerned with the origins, as society evolves over time. I am speaking mainly as an American, and I don't think the majority of circumcisions here are for religious reasons. It's more of a cultural norm than anything.

There might be some element of truth to it. I get a sense that peer pressure and the notion that "it runs in the family" takes precedence. But calling it cultural when there are material incentives and highly over-blown medical claims is a bit repulsive to those who abhor this practice. And any notion of 'prevention of masturbation' is just absurd.

You simply cannot ignore its origins either. There's absolutely nothing which suggests that it has "evolved" over time in large parts of the middle east and Africa where the practice is rampant purely for religious reasons (including the removal of the clitoris). This to me is just disregarding of the rights and individual of a child. They are not the property of their parents. I do hope that those who did have their foreskin removed think twice before subjecting anyone else through the procedure in the future.

I don't really understand how calling it a cultural norm is repulsive to you. I wasn't even making a comment on whether it's good or bad with that statement, I was just saying I think that it's more of a cultural thing and less of a religious thing. And as I said, I'm speaking of America as an American. I am sure it's not the case for everyone but I'd bet the majority of parents don't circumcise children for religious reasons here. Like you said, 'it runs in the family' probably takes precedence and it's very common here.

When I think about it,circumcision is a pretty weird thing. But I was circumcised and don't hate my parents for it and I'm glad I am.

Christopher Hitchens said it best, imo.

Quote:

In more recent times, some pseudosecular arguments have been adduced for male circumcision. It has been argued that the process is more hygienic for the male and thus more healthy for females in helping them avoid, for example, cervical cancer. Medicine has exploded these claims or else revealed them as problems which can just as easily be solved by a “loosening” of the foreskin. Full excision, originally ordered by god as the blood price for the promised future massacre of the Canaanites, is now exposed for what it is — a mutilation of a powerless infant with the aim of ruining its future sex life. The connection between religious barbarism and sexual repression could not be plainer than when it is “marked in the flesh.” Who can count the number of lives that have been made miserable in this way, especially since Christian doctors began to adopt ancient Jewish folklore in their hospitals? And who can bear to read the medical textbooks and histories which calmly record the number of boy babies who died from infection after their eighth day, or who suffered gross and unbearable dysfunction and disfigurement? The record of syphilitic and other infection, from rotting rabbinical teeth or other rabbinical indiscretions, or of clumsy slitting of the urethra and sometimes a vein, is simply dreadful. And it is permitted in New York in 2006! If religion and its arrogance were not involved, no healthy society would permit this primitive amputation, or allow any surgery to be practiced on the genitalia without the full and informed consent of the person concerned.
