No offense, but I don't think you quite get it. It's not that people believe it so much as fear it. Rationally, I think most would agree that you're not going to cause any harm by writing a note because that would basically be magic. But one might still fear that possibility of hurting someone with a note and that fear can still influence ones actions. This is a test of whether or not such fear influences your thinking. It's a psychological experiment.
