I kinda love Batman simply cause he embodies toxic masculinity while showing how it's the most damaging thing you could possibly do to a child that turns them into a cluster **** human being who can't deal with the most basic emotions.

Batman v Superman is an underrated movie exactly because it shows Batman getting all caught up in having a self-righteous, aggressive hate boner for Superman, ending up in him causing more harm than good.

And then everyone just complained that Batman wasn't supposed to act like that. He's a vigilante. It made perfect sense to me.

I was wondering if you know this channel?

One of very few that I think are anywhere near as good as Contra's channel.

His channel is currently just named "Shaun" (used to be "Shaun and Jen").
luv me some Shaun&Jen

Some people say his monologue is boring to listen to, but personally I find his dry, deadpan style of humour frequently hilarious

I agree. He's a funny guy. A top 5 YT channel for me. His "everything wrong with Cinema Sins" videos were also pretty hilarious, even if the more serious topics are what he does the best.

Rational Disconnect is another channel I think is pretty good. He's still finding his style and doesn't have a ton of videos, but I think he's good.

The problem was that they didn't earn Batman's more extreme vigilantism. They just sort of said that he was a more extreme vigilante. Go read The Dark Knight Returns. I think people deify that book for the wrong reasons. The Batman in that story is unhinged, violent, and sadistic in a way that Batman is never characterized in continuity, and it feels reasonable when you consider how Batman might be, but it explores a world where that Batman might be. Whereas the Batman of Batman v. Superman is just a different Batman for the sake of him not being the Nolan Batman.

The way I remember it, they did make it seem understandable how Batman would consider himself justified in his actions and have his heart in the right place. I'm not saying Batman V Superman was really good, because it was very shaky in some ways, but I liked it way better than I thought I would. I guess that, as someone who's not really deep into comic book lore, it managed to have a bit more going on psychologically than your average super hero movie. Justice League was a mess, but I even liked that one fairly much - even though it dropped a lot of the best aspects of the previous movie.

But I don't know. As a kid, the few super hero comics I read were mostly Spider Man. I don't know my Batman ABCs properly.

Um... read Year One. It's a four issue series so it doesn't require any real commitment but it also is a very good and non-cheesy way to explore what Batman is. It's basically a far more satisfying version of Batman Begins. It's a great way to associate early Batman's obsession with fixing the Gotham that existed when his parents were killed rather than just watching him fight supervillains. And his fighting that SWAT team is one of the most satisfying things to ever happen in a Batman comic.

But if you want to read a comic like I was talking about where Batman is interpreted entirely differently where he's kind of interpreted in a way that would make sense in the real world where he's more vengeful and sadistic towards criminals then The Return of the Dark Knight is good, though... it's really weird in a political and social sense. I think a lot of the people who dick suck it, even non-comic book critics, don't really appreciate just how ****ing crazy and objectivist the writer is. But that honestly makes it even more fascinating even if it kind of takes you out of the story while you're analyzing it.

My dislike of Frank Miller is the primary reason why I still haven't read his famous Batman material. It's been praised like few other comics ever have. I don't expect it to be 100% deserved. I know I can find it at the library. They've got a great comics section.

Oh yeah no I wouldn't recommend reading The Dark Night Returns if you have a crippling issue with Frank Miller. The Dark Knight Returns is ****ing weird as a work by Frank Miller. It lampoons what I call "lily livered liberalism" in a way that feels exactly like Ayn Rand, but Year One doesn't really have that going on. It's got really just the few pages that are questionable (and it's very questionable, calling out leather-bound gay dudes in a park as if they're rapists and also associating hookers with women out to **** over men). But other than that I can't recommend it enough. It's amazing and not at all what Frank Miller's worst tendencies would scare you off of.

But if you just don't want Frank Miller (I understand, he's a ****) then have this. Grant Morrison is god and not problematic. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth is both visually the most ****ed up and fascinating Batman comic ever but also one of the most fascinatingly written Batman comics. It even has the Joker as one of the most bizarrely written villains in comics without even having him being a central villain. OMG it's a good comic. Like Batman on acid.
