I'm openly prejudiced against Islam and consider everyone who adheres to it part of the problem. I very clearly state I consider the religion itself a problem.

I think he means that religious moderates normalize the concept of a religion in the minds of the rest of the world, which gives extremists at least some legitimacy by association.
