That's the stereotype but the obsession with anime is a much wider phenomenon. It's probably as widespread among Gen Z girls, the majority of whom don't have any trouble finding sexual partners and aren't right wing in the slightest, as among the demographic you're describing. We've probably all seen this tweet and it's pretty spot on.

You know anime is literally all animation from Japan right? Saying all anime is for kids is like saying all animation is for kids, what is this the 90s? It was parents with this lazy mindset who bought their kids a VHS tape of Ninja Scroll for Christmas.

It's true a lot of terminally online fascists are into anime but that sure as hell doesn't represent the majority of anime fandom. There are all kinds of anime that appeal to all kinds of people, like any other medium.

I never see these losers from 4chan with Studio Ghibli or Satoshi Kon avatars, it's always stuff like Attack on Titan because it uses fascist imagery, K-ON because they're pedophiles or some really sh*tty anime I've never heard of that no one likes except for them for either of the previous two reasons.

Now while I'm not a big fan of anime, I'd consider Spirited Away to be a masterpiece.

Yeah Ghibli has a much broader appeal than most anime, I know plenty of people who don't like anime other than Ghibli.

Spirited Away specifically - the music, the stunning visuals, the engaging story, the world-building, it's all top notch. I saw it when I was younger (I think Cartoon Network/Toonami might have aired it?) so perhaps nostalgia has biased me, but has Ghibli released any other films on the level of Spirited Away? I tried My Neighbor Totoro once, but that didn't quite hit the mark for me.

I believe much of it doesn't cross the pond cause anime dweebs don't want the Japanese equivalent of Dora the Explorer, and while the age range of anime is broader than Western cartoons have historically been there's a lot less made for people older than young adult. Big3 is a simpleton obviously but he's not technically wrong.

Princess Mononoke is the one to challenge Spirited Away but I'm also partial to Castle in the Sky.

Yeah, I was going off what I've seen hit the western market. I know nothing about what anime are specifically popular in Japan among any demographic, much less the younger demographic. That said, I would make a distinction between children and young adult. While a show like DBZ or Naruto can be consumed and enjoyed by young adults, it can't really so much by children (the target demographic of shows like Dora the Explorer or The Wiggles). When it comes to anime that's popular in the west, I can't think of any made for children specifically.

I'll check them out. Not sure if there's a great place to stream those in HD - so I might just pick up the blurays if they're not too expensive. I've had my eyes on a Ghibli blu-ray boxset, but the price has never been right for me (it's been sitting in my Amazon wishlist).

I have made a few unsuccessful attempts to enjoy anime. I dunno why but it loses my attention really quickly. Probably cause it's created for Asian children, who have notoriously high IQs
