Why is everyone getting so worked up about the word f a g g o t? It's just a word, a noise. Yeah, it has contemporary cultural connotations, but obviously JWB didn't imply them in his usage of the word. By going so crazy over it and all playing white knights, all you are doing is strengthening people who do use the word offensively. Same goes for any such "offensive" words. A word is just a word until you put it in context.
