So you haven't actually listened to the album yet?

jackhammer 03-24-2008 02:31 PM

Only the Myspace tracks.

The beat is important, but not all good songs have good ones.

Also, speaking of mediocre, DIOYY aren't anything special themselves.

And jackhammer was the one who called it Electronica throughout the entire thread. Also, Ishkur's isn't really that great a guide. It's fun to read if you already know a lot about the genres he's talking about, but half the guide is him making fun of EDM.

just because he's poking fun at edm doesn't mean it's any less accurate or informative

also, concerning DIOYY: they are one fo the most refreshing and original bands i've heard in awhile. their spastic brand of electro-rock puts all this justice wannabe electro-house rubbish to shame

god justice blows. every band just reminds me more of this

stop listening to justice

that is all

Well it's kind of hard to get a good grasp on say, Microhouse, when he goes out of his way to tell you it's boring and bland outside of the two or three producers he names.

DIOYY is just a Justice ripoff, and a poor one at that. They sounded bland and pretty unoriginal even when I first heard them, and that was two years ago back when the only popular Electro House artists were MSTRKRFT and the Ed Banger crew. And c'mon, I don't care how much you hate Justice for whatever reason, you can't deny that "Never Be Alone" and the Waters of Nazareth EP are basically classics at this point.

wow.

just, wow.

are you serious? a justice ripoff? are you deaf? seriously, are you?

my mind cannot even begin to understand this statement. you literally just blew my mind

justice is only "classic" because it's the only edm pitchfork and its hipster followers have heard. just because something is classic doesn't mean it is good, or has merit. just look at elliott smith

lolol

First off, listen to a song like "We Are Rockstars" or any of DIOYY's other early stuff and tell me that it doesn't just sound like early Justice vs MSTRKRFT. Besides, basically every Electro House group formed after/around the time of the Waters of Nazareth release is just trying to be Justice anyway.

Also, Pitchfork didn't even jump on the Justice bandwagon until Cross was released (and I think they didn't even review it until a couple months after, and did a hilariously bad job at it), so I wouldn't really say that at the time of its release, Waters or Never Be Alone were counted amongst hipster EDM. Certainly that was their main fanbase (the first time I ever heard of MSTRKFT was in one of Joey Arak's always hilarious Blue States Lose columns), but it wasn't the usual Pitchfork approved hipster dance yet.

Never Be Alone was a gigantic hit all over Europe and even in the US before Justice had even released another song, so I'd say it's a classic with or without Pitchfork's approval. Not to mention that at that point Justice were still pretty decently respected by most "real" EDM producers (Ellen Allien mentioned liking them, they got a DJ Funk remix, etc.).

And I didn't really mean classic in the sense that it's universally praised (although both Never Be Alone and Waters pretty much are), I meant classic just as an adjective meaning really ****ing good.

only justice i've ever enjoyed is We Are Your Friends with Simian. Justice are boring, they use the same goddamn synths on every song, their beats are weak,

i'll admit, D.A.N.C.E is a great single, but they do not deserve the praise they get.

boys noize, surkin, boom bip, cut copy, digitalism, en masse, lo-fi-fnk, mr. flash, mstrkrft, muscles, natalie portman's shaved head, neon neon, para one, the presets, riot in belgium, shameboy, shy child, simian mobile disco, todosantos, tussle, van she, the whip, yuksek

all these are way better than justice.

also, just because a band is influenced or came after another doesn't mean they're a ripoff. by that logic every rock band is simply ripping off Robert Johnson

The complaint about Justice’s synths might’ve made sense when all they had released was Waters of Nazareth, but I really don’t see the connection between a track like “D.A.N.C.E” and a track like “Waters of Nazareth.”

Most of the artists you named as better:

A. Don’t sound anything like Justice or have anything to do with this scene
B. Sound pretty much exactly like Justice
Or
C. Suck

Shy Child? Lo-Fi-Fnk? I’m not even sure what either one of those has to do with this discussion. Anyway, the fact is that 90% of the blog DJs/producers that have come about these past few years got their start by making a simple track with Ableton, throwing in some gritty basslines, and hitting the distort button.

Where do you think half of those artists would be if Justice hadn’t come along and basically invented this entire scene? Sure, in 06 people like MSTRKFT and loved “Hustler,” but it wasn’t until Justice got big that you saw this scene become anything more than another blogger fad. It honestly amazes me that someone who appears to buy into every Electro House producer making the blog rounds can sit there and claim that Justice is boring. That’s like sitting there claiming to love techno, but hate Saunderson, Atkins, and May.
