I used to live in Florida when the Breaks scene was kicking down there. We used to go to The Amphitheater in Ybor City and and there were always breaks. Man, I remember that place... the oxygen bars, girls dressed up as sexy rabbits dancing on poles, rotating dancefloor, radio station broadcasting live on Saturday nights.
That was a fun place.

Yea, those where the days...they sadly made Amp into a hip-hop club. it was called Club 360... haha, because of the rotating dance floor. But recently (thank God) they went out of business.... Now the tech guys that used to work for Amp bought the place and redid the inside. It is reopened as Tantra, named after the sat night parties that Amp used to have... the dancers are back, Glow Boy and Glow Girl are back and so are the bubbles

The place is jammin on sats.... I just wish they would play more breaks and less House... It is definitely worth a visit if you plan on being in town any time. ATM Tony Faline is the resident DJ but I hear they are trying to get Keoki...

I think the general trend of the above-ground electronic scene is shifting back towards house in Florida, so you're gonna see more DJs with that on their plates. It's still surprising though, because they don't call it "land-o-breaks" for nothing, and Florida pioneered it's own style of breaks.

Might just be the club though. I don't know. I haven't lived in Florida for 6 years, so I don't really have a feel for the state of the vibe anymore.

Damn, sorry you were disappointed. Anything specific about it? I played it again this morning and one minor complaint I have is that some of the tracks are too long...it could benefit from being mixed up a bit more. But I like most of the tracks.

I have not heard that Meat Katie mix. I know the name from back in the day, not sure if it's just from having heard a few of his tracks on other mixes or if I've heard any of his mixes.

I will give it another listen. My main complaint that nothing really stood out and there wasn't enough big fat basslines for me or memorable hooks.

Hmm. It seemed to have a good amount of fat basslines to me, but then again we've got different pools of experience when it comes to breakbeat, maybe this is more what I'm used to. Both that and lack of hooks could have something to do with the long-ish tracks, too. If it was more mixed up, more emphasis would be placed on the basslines and hooks...then throw on the next track. I got my hands on that Meat Katie mix last night and will give it a spin soon.

Listening to a Rennie Pilgrem-curated mix right now, Rennie Pilgrem Presents TCR50, disc one mixed by DJ Tamsin. I've had this for many years and one thing I always noticed was a lack of fat basslines in most of the mix (both CDs, actually).

breaks are awesome. so much more interesting and danceable than the repetitive thudding trance crap which seems to be plaguing nightclubs nowadays.

I am playing this mix now, on the last track actually. I think it's a fine mix but is far too progressive for my taste, when it comes to breaks. Many atmospheric slow-downs (the kind of stuff that always bored/irritated me when I was actually on a dancefloor) and the type of vocal samples typically found in progressive house. I own several progressive breaks sets and like them to a degree, but in general I prefer my breaks a bit darker, colder, more clinical I suppose. Stuff usually labeled as nu-skool, funky, or UK breaks, all of which work best with an abundance of fat basslines. This Meat Katie mix feels a little too warm and accessible. And honestly I feel it seriously lacked fat basslines as well. But I do find it more enjoyable than the TCR50 mix I posted above...which suffered from a bassline deficiency but didn't offer much in their place.

There were definitely several tracks that jumped out at me, and the mix is good in the sense that it's mixed well and flows well. I didn't really dislike any tracks. It's just not what I'd reach for when I want to hear some breaks. Kind of the same way I prefer garage, deep, funky, or jazzy house over progressive house. Any type of progressive electronic brings in elements of trance, and I'm not a fan of trance for the most part. I like it more raw and less atmospheric, if that makes sense.
