This band has two dozen members. It reminds me of a borderline-orchestral indie rock tribute to every song that ever hit the radio waves in the 80's. It's kind of ridiculous, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Pretty good electronic music here, from one of the founders of Blind Idiot God.

All first listens from my ski road trip today. I didn't feel like listening to anything I already had so I played a few albums from my Spotify "need to listen" list. Overall I was quite pleased with what I heard.

Ex-Cult - Midnight Passenger (2014)
Sound a bit like Black Flag but not as hardcore or raw. RYM says Garage Punk, I don't know it's not all that garage to me. Unless Garage Punk is the new Hardcore Punk. :shrug: Anyway, it's not bad but I can't say I really want to return to it - it's pretty samey. I had heard several songs from it already but was tired of hearing them on shuffle so I finally played the album. Now I can remove it from my playlist.

Beth Israel - Dental Denial (2014)
RYM calls this one Garage Punk (primary), Post-Punk, Psychedelic Rock, Synth Punk, and Lo-Fi Indie. It's quite a varied album, the few songs I'd heard previously would have been hard to identify as the same band without looking. The album worked, it being varied is a good thing. I can't really say what I'd call the style after just one listen, but I guess there's a bit of all the genres mentioned, to some extent. Will listen again. About the name - I know nothing about the meaning, but it came up when watching the latest episode of Modern Family. A nurse misunderstood Andy saying "Beth is real" in a painkiller-induced mumble, thinking he was asking to be sent to Beth Israel, which I take is a medical facility in Cali.

The Movements - Like Elephants 2 (2014)
A Swedish band playing some kind of rock music that I'm wanting to call Alternative Rock, but not in a bad, boring radio stuff from the late 90s/early 00s way. There's some psychedelia, some garage rock revival, and it made for an enjoyable album I will return to. Good variation. Maybe I should have checked out Like Elephants 1 first, but I first heard of the band by perusing the 2014 charts on RYM.

The Paperhead - Africa Avenue (2014)
This album was pretty fun, recalling some 60s and 70s psychedelic pop. I found myself remembering The Beatles on the track "Mother May". One RYM reviewer mentions Love and Piper at the Gates of Dawn Pink Floyd but I didn't hear those on the first pass. It clocked in at just 30 minutes, it was over before I expected as I didn't realize it was so short going into it. Will definitely keep in rotation.

Dick Diver - Calendar Days (2013)
This Melbourne, Australia band plays Jangly Indie Pop and I discovered them through Trouble in Mind records (Ultimate Painting, Morgan Delt) as they are releasing their latest album this month. I liked the sound, it reminded me of fellow Australian Twerps who play a similar style and also feature a female vocalist on some songs. Good variety on the album, definitely interested in hearing it again as well as their upcoming album Melbourne, Florida. No one in the band is named Dick.

The UV Race - Homo (2011)
Garage Rock, Post-Punk, Art Rock? I'll take it. This had a good rhythm and is about what I like when it comes to punk these days. Maybe it's Art Punk more than it is Art Rock, I'd say. I'll have to pay more attention next time to better describe it. Oh they're also Australian, and share a member with Dick Diver and two with Total Control.

Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves (2015)
I'm really uncertain how I feel about this. It sounds like a mixed bag to be honest, some good tunes and some not so good tunes. It does have some flashes of what they did really well in the past, but even the best songs on this album don't come close to reaching the heights of The Moon & Antarctica or The Lonesome Crowded West. I wasn't expected to be blown away by this album or anything but it's underwhelming to listen to a once great indie rock band sounding so average.

Enslaved - In Times (2015)
An album I've really been looking forward to and it hasn't disappointed. Enslaved are one of those evergreen bands who just continue releasing quality music and never being afraid to evolve, even over twenty years into their career. There's a heavy prog influence and more melodic elements on this album yet it still remains rooted in the band's black metal past.

Ethereal Shroud - They Became the Falling Ash (2015)
This is a one-man band that combines atmospheric black metal with doom. The production makes it sound like it was recorded in a cave. This isn't necessarily a good thing as it sounds a bit muddy and the lack of low end takes away some punch. Like most atmospheric black metal artists they aim for a huge epic and I'm left wondering to myself whether I dig this or think it's very generic. It's okay I guess.
