It had it's progressive moments, but otherwise how can anyone even separate this from average metalcore? I'll give it some more listens only because of all the praise it gets.
I don't understand why this album's so hyped. I didn't like it much either.

I don't like BTBAM that much and I hate it when people bum this album, but if you think these guys and The Devil Wears Prada sound similar then yer doin it wrong.
It's a bit early to say whether this is as good as the Scream or Kaleidoscope... well after two listens I can probably say that it is; it's like the latter with more guitars, and is a prime example of the genius of Magazine/PiL guitarist John McGeogh, who on further reading it seems was hugely influential on later generations of players.
Also of note is the contribution of a member who is integral to the sound of the album, Budgie (who drummed for the Slits) is on point throughout with intricate but forceful rhythms and tons of inventive percussion touches. When I hear this I think of Public Image and the album that came after Metal Box, how the focus shifted massively from the bass to the percussion on that record.
Neither McGeogh or Budgie were in the Banshees for the Scream, so anybody who has never ventured beyond that high-water mark should check out this and the album preceding.
It's amazing that a band could put out three great albums in as many years, no mucking about, just experimentation and marked sonic evolution with each subsequent release...
edit: evidence that they were heading in a slightly more accessible direction, the rest of the album is as dissonant and weird as Kaleidoscope though, pretty much

I've not listened to Juju in ages.
I have to say I do prefer the Banshees early - mid 80s stuff much more than the punky 70s stuff.

I iz inclined to agree at this point, although to me the Scream is insurmountable for brand of it's minimal, cold atmospherics, despite it being a one-off Banshees line-up. As you say it is much more a punk album (is the second album any good?).
They were like the best accident ever when you think that S.S. apparently just kind of stumbled into music... similar to Lydon with PiL and innumerable other bands at the time I guess. '78 was a magic year.
It's funny I've had the aforementioned and Kaleidoscope for years and always appreciated them but it's a classic case of it being the right music at the right time. Siouxsie's vocal gymnastics hit a new high on Juju though, she was a true original, owned the whole show really, just fantastic

Got both Silversun Pickups albums yesterday... Carnavas and Swoon... really looking forward to having the spare time to give both CDs a good solid listen... maybe I'll get through one tonight, although I have an annoyingly late finish at work... blah...
