One artist released a real banger yesterday.

Thoughout the mid to late 90s I entertained the "headier" or more conceptual works.
I really dug the downtempo and chill-out scenes, was a HUGE fan of cut-up/plunderphonics/sampledelica, lots of NinjaTune artists, minimal glitchy ambience like Pantha du Prince or Telefon Tel Aviv's first effort, and shoegaze classics like Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space.

But I stayed in a safe-and-pretentious bubble of KLF's Chill Out and The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld for the duration of rock's last dying breath just before the new millennium and pretty much gave up after that.

I spend my days chasing down rare pressings of cultural musical milestones - things like Popol Vuh's Hosianna Mantra and Manuel Gottsching's Inventions for Electric Guitar and E2-E4.

I'm fully-aware that I am missing out on a TON of exciting new music. It's all off my radar and I'm curious to see what the planet has been doing since the year 2000.

Maybe I'll find something here on MB.

Out of curiosity, I've never heard you mention anything that I knew to especially abrasive, but have you ever been into stuff like old school industrial, power electronics, noise music, or just in general the more unlistenable side of avant garde? It sounds like exactly the kind of think you'd listen to, but I just don't remember you mentioning it.

I dig some Einstürzende Neubauten, Muslimgauze, Throbbing Gristle, La Monte Young, Nurse With Wound (and the NWW List), but my racing-thoughts and ADHD-mind delight more in Berlin School ambient synth music than in grating noise.

I prefer Alvin Lucier's Music on a Long Thin Wire to Young's Poem for Chairs, Tables and Benches.

Just the same, I've spun Trout Mask and Metal Machine Music on repeat for entire evenings while writing. Some albums just set a great atmosphere for the mind.

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot - I constructed a noise multimedia piece called 5'50" of Pop which simultaneously played the music videos for all 100 songs from my former retail hell's MUZAK station.

Do you enjoy Rc cola over Coka cola too?

Foo fighters has a couple of decent tunes but Nirvana is way better.
The drumming in Nirvana is also way better, Dave although not a bad frontman to me excels more as a drummer than a singer.

I don't mind Dave as a vocalist, but I definitely wouldn't see myself choosing Foo Fighters over Nirvana. Not to say anything bad about Foo Fighters though. I've listened to them a fair bit and I enjoy them, but they're just too safe if that makes sense.

To me Nirvana had a better defined sound than FF

Foo fighters although good always kinda emulated other bands in some of their songs, this song

Is practically a Nirvana song,
And this one

is practically a QOTSA song,

The songs to me that really define their unique sound are songs like 'Big me' which is the precursor to 'learn to fly' and 'Hero' & 'Everlong'

those are the good songs that to me capture their actual signature style of playing but Kurt did that effortlessly in almost every song. (After Bleach) and that's why i prefer Nirvana.

To put it simply i think Kurt is a better artist than Dave but i wouldn't go as far to say he is a better musician.

When I was about 14 I became addicted to Nirvana - I bought all studio albums, some LP's and live albums, as well as wallpapers. Nirvana is an important band and means a lot to me because it's a part of my teenage years. I still listen to them and I still like Kurt Cobain a lot.

I can't really say who's a better musician and in terms of success and impact I think Nirvana wins, hands down; but personally I prefer listening to the Foo Fighters, there's something amusing about them.

I agree that Dave excels far more on the drums.

I now think Alice In Chains is better than Nirvana, but I consider AIC to be closer to metal than grunge, while Nirvana is more punk.

Oh another opinion, what's the deal about Avenged Sevenfold? Many people say they are one of the best contemporary artists - I don't think they suck, but there's way better modern bands out there.
