I'm not compelled to listen to Dark Side of the Moon like I am with other albums, maybe because I heard those songs so often. I played Selling England by the Pound, Close to the Edge and Trilogy a lot more than I ever played DSotM. And even though I never in the mood to listen to DSotM I am not going to say it's over-rated because its the one album that enters the public conscience. I know there are a **** ton of DSotM T shirts and it always appears on album lists, but that kind of notoriety doesn't bother me.

It's still a decent album, a bit slow pace but consistent. There is substance to the lyrics. I would never recommend it as the greatest album of all time - it will knock your socks off. I would say if you want an album to chill to then maybe listen to DSotM.

Don't you understand? Back then, nobody was doing that.

Yorke and Frown, what were the albums that turned the music world upside down when you were both in your mid teens?

Come on, stop with the age gap.
If we were all putting OK Computer over DSOTM or something like that and generally ignoring "old" music, I'd get that. But pretty much everyone here digs stuff from way, way back.
That argument really plays against you in the debate about being overrated, since music we discovered at a young, probably awesome, age tends to resonate with us more, often undeservedly so.

Saying DSOTM is overrated is similar to saying Bowie is overrated.

They are not overrated. They are just too often over-hyped by bandwagon fans. It's just too damn trendy to adopt this.

And ya, there's a number of bands that have a handful of albums that can be debated as which is the epic masterpiece.

Example would be the Stones with Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile. All ****ing masterpieces.

Meddle is better.

741 consecutive weeks on the Billboard top 200 album list. 741!?!?!?

50 million copies estimated to be sold worldwide.

DSOTM blew the doors off when it first came out and it's continued to blow people away for decades.

I consider it an absolute masterpiece with very few peers in the overall general rock genre.

Of all of the dad rock albums I've exposed my son to DSOTM is the one he completely agrees is brilliant.

But that's just my and his opinion.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell

So your response to that album being overrated is to talk about how much everyone loves it? Hmm... As for your other question, DSOTM was one of the albums that ruled my childhood along with IV, Mr. Bungle's s/t, and Slipknot. Since then I've developed an understanding of how DSOTM is overrated (along with another album from that list) and how Slipknot plain sucks.

You don't have to convince me it's a great album. As I said, I already think that. And I'm well aware of its Billboard run and its level of influence. It's a classic. All I'm saying is that no album could live up to the level of hype surrounding DSOTM and thus I think it's probably kind of overrated.

There is no greatest of all time. There's a couple dozen or so that will always be included in the debate. DSOTM is one of those IMO.

Overrated / Over-hyped, pffft. Semantics I guess.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to use age as leverage - just saying that it does kinda color things from both sides of the coin.

Listening to an album for the first time that's already been around for 25+ years, and already gained a cult like status - with people telling you it's the greatest of all time - is not the same as listening to it when it first came out and was just another album at the time. But over the next couple of years just exploded. Neither experience is better or worse, just different.

And ya, it is a mellow record. You get thoroughly stoned, put on a red light, and then listen to it from start to finish.

Before I'd heard the album, or even knew about Pink Floyd, I heard Money on AM radio. Me and my friends were convinced it was a black group because of the funky vibe of the song. Was pretty blown away to find out it was Lilly white Brits.

And has there ever been a more successful song that's mainly in 7/4 time?

yeah and if one doesn't think it fits in that conversation, it would be considered overrated to them.
