I like Shiny. It's one song and it's catchy.

Thank goodness it's only one song. I don't think I could handle a bunch of Shiny Happy People.

I did sort of feel embarrassed for them watching that video. Maybe they should have sold it to the B-52's and Stipe could've harmonized on their version with a little more dignity and let that chick be the star of that one.

U2 ‎– Achtung Baby
R.E.M. ‎– Out Of Time
Genesis ‎– We Can't Dance
Def Leppard ‎– Adrenalize

For example The Clash were the band of the 70s and in 1980 they were at the fore breaking new boundaries, they went commercial in 1982. By '85 they they lost their knack and released a dead grotty album which incidentally coincided with beginning of Post-Hardcore. The best album Genesis released in the 80s was an eponymous album simply called "Genesis." By the time the Grunge era crash landing on take-off Genesis was releasing commercialize bologna. Shame on R.E.M. for witting Shiny Happy People. They released it 1991. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. nuff said.
Duke pisses all over that.

Yeah, that would probably been better.

I don't know about that. Tony Banks was in top form on the Genesis album.

Genesis was their attempt to come back after Abacab (yeah I know you love it but it was the beginning of their slide into pure pop) and as such featured some more proggy songs but again mostly it was charty stuff like "Illegal alien" and "That's all". Duke was their last concept album and gave them top ten hits too, but I prefer it. If you think Tony was off his game, listen to the instrumentals "Duke's Travels/End" and the intro to "Behind the lines", "Alone tonight" and "Heathaze" to name a few. Collins was also a lot less annoying on Duke, which makes it for certain to me anyway their last great album.

Duke is clearly the superior record. Not even close.

Pfft, everyone knows the best Genesis album is the one without Collins or Gabriel.

No where did I say that Tony was off his game on Duke. Music-wise Tony Banks retain a lot hooks and tricks from Genesis' past while incorporating newer stuff. If Genesis had a certain sound in the 70s with Peter Gabriel it was because they were incorporating different styles that were popular back then at the time. So while the album doesn't have that "70s" Prog sound, they still retains the spirit of Prog of melding different music styles together on the album. Tony Bank is a true music alchemist the way he can play the keyboard. I like a lot of his work on that album and that is why I said he was in top form. "Taking It All Too Hard " could easily fit on Duke, both the music and the lyrics. You could easily imagine that the song is being sung to the Duchess.

Duke is my favorite post Hackett Genesis album. Collins, having just gotten divorced, is all over the lyrics on that album.

I am the one who guided you this far,
All you know and all you feel.
Nobody must know my feel
For nobody would understand,
And you kill what you fear.

I call you for I must leave,
You're on your own until the end.
There was a choice but now it's gone,
I said you wouldn't understand,
Take what's yours and be damned.
