I've given Nick Drake chance after chance but I still find him mediocre at best.

Nick Drake is one of those "I started listening to him when I started to discover newer music when I was young" thing for me. I think he was ahead of his time as far as developing a sound that, while not the ONLY one doing those things, was definitely one of the few who started making that style of music well. You still had Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, and Tim Buckley doing great things but I always felt Nick Drake stood out from Young and Townes. Tim Buckley was a f*cking genius and I'll fight anybody who says otherwise so he's still the best songwriter from that era to me but Drake wasn't too far behind him.
