I think it's a widely held opinion by most people who know both bands.

I wouldn't say overrated is the right word, they aren't nearly as well known as The Stooges.
I love MC5 personally.

Well, they're regularly mentioned on music sites as being one of the big 'proto punk' bands, along with The Stooges and The Velvets. It's usually those three I've seen mentioned together, and in my opinion the MC5 aren't in the same league as those two. They might not be as well known, but I'm talking more about the quality of their music, which I wouldn't rate as highly as many people seem to do.

Allmusic gives Kick Out The Jams 5/5, for example - just one incidence, but there's no way that album gets anywhere near that high a rating from me, hence I think they're pretty overrated in many quarters. That said, Kick Out The Jams is a good listen once in a while, I won't deny that.

I think it just a matter of opinion, personally I like MC5 more than The Stooges. Another lesser known band from that era that has some grounding in Proto-Punk (possibly an influence to those 3 you mentioned) is The Flamin' Groovies (Terrible name, great band), which I also like more than The Stooges.

they have received many chances over many years. at this point i doubt anything is going to change. they aren't bad but they aren't great either.

Sunny Day Real Estate's S/T 2nd album is just as good if not better than Diary.

Michael Jackson's Bad album was better than Thriller.
